Russian Helicopters May Have Fired on Bystanders at Zapad Military Drills

Two people were hospitalized with serious injuries after a helicopter accidentally fired on bystanders at the Zapad 2017 military exercises, the online news portal 66.ru cited a source as saying on Tuesday.

The week-long drills in Western Russia and neighboring Belarus kicked off last week, with around 13,000 troops, hundreds of tanks, aircraft, warships and other military hardware participating.

The incident reportedly took place at the Luzhsky range near St. Petersburg either on Monday or Sunday. President Vladimir Putin visited the range on Monday.

The unnamed source told 66.ru that there appeared to have been a technical glitch on board “and the missiles blasted off on their own.”

“At least two cars burned down, two people were seriously injured, they are now hospitalized,” the source said. “The victims were most likely journalists.”

The Russian Defense Ministry said two attack helicopters simulated aerial reconnaissance and close air support missions on Monday as part of Zapad 2017.

Video footage accompanying the news report appears to show one of the helicopters misfiring a surface-to-air missile in the direction of camera crews.

what happens when you buy the main hardware and then suddenly realise the rest of the package is out of your budget...

French Mistral-class in front, Egyptian Mistral Anwar al Sadat behind... look closely at its air defence.

U do know that the ship was tailored with russia air defence equipment and then stripped clean when the deal fell through.

When egyption bought over, it a empty shell.

As stop gap, their existing avenger will be used for short range defence. Eygpt is in talk with russia on rearming the mistal with original equipment again together with attack helicopter.

Even they switch to western system, it not like they can get a RAM or more advance SEA Ram like off a hardware store. All go through congress again as egypt relationship with western is not in their best day after the arab spring accusations

I wonder how long the 'stop gap' will last. Surely trade deals are one of the best ways to secure diplomatic ties?

Probably they will arm it with Sadral SAMs aka naval Mistral - Mistral on a Mistral rolleyes.gif what attack helis will Egypt operate from it?

Not when the accused accuse the guy as the one funding the arab spring. They equate it as working with the two headed snake.

Would be much cheaper to just rearm the original system the russian installed.

In talk for kh-52 but still an open ended question. Probbaly, eygpt is also haggling for a better price else western then.

naaahhh

this wan is expected..bought su-30mkm kena komplen, bought scorpene kena komplen, bought EC725 heli kena komplen, bought A400M kena komplen, bought Gempita kena komplen, bought pendekar, bought frigate also kena komplen

all using the same lame excuse; "the money can be usefully spent in buying this/that than the current purchase"..i still remember when Anwar Ibrahim said that the money use in buying EC725 can be use to buy MI-171 in huge numbers & its better to buy Mi-171 rather than buying EC725

i dunno why but i have a very skeptical feeling towards these so-called "military officials" who complaint..i think they were actually indirectly have interest with private company that lobbying their product where they lost in the bid so they became sour grape & start to complaint here & there

but thats just my feeling
*
actually i do kind of agree with the purchase of A400M . It good no doubt but I would prefer to up the with the purchase of AWECS and MPA for situation awareness first before dwelling into strategic airlifts

Rheinmetall to provide Skyshield air defence systems to Asian customer

German land systems specialist Rheinmetall AG has been selected to supply Skyshield air defence systems to the unnamed Asian customer.

An Asian nation has contracted with Rheinmetall to supply it with advanced air defence technology. In a competitive bidding process, Rheinmetall Air Defence won the order to supply the customer with the latest generation of its Skyshield systems. The contract, booked in April of this year, is worth over €100 million. Production of the systems is already under way. Shipment will take place over the course of the next three years.

Besides reconnaissance sensors, 35mm fire units and the accompanying command and control equipment, the contract includes a comprehensive logistics and service package.

More: Rheinmetall wins order for new air defence systems

Rheinmetall will be providing complete training for operators and maintenance personnel as well as technical assistance and live fire exercise support in the customer country. Moreover, local companies will take part in the project, including construction of buildings and vehicle procurement.

Rheinmetall attaches great commercial importance to this contract, with follow-up orders already on the horizon.

Mrca on hold is nothing new

It been on hold for past 15 years. Neither was funding make available during tat period. Thus, it was not in budget anyway, just talk show material every during the dsa oe defence expose

But it was never scrapped because rmaf always wanted it. The reason rmaf always bring it up is tat to let the central government know that they will not give up mrca

Mkm n f18 is getting old. Maybe last another 15 before it not liable anymore. A mrca would take delivery easily 5 or 8 years from the date of award.
