They are one of the Indian subgroups with a strong warrior culture. Not all cultures place the same importance on military duty and honour, especially in the modern age, to the extent that whether as individuals or as groups, they tend to train and fight fiercely and skilfully.
Other cultures around the world who are/were famous for martial ability include the Scottish and Swiss in Europe, Kurdish in the Middle East, Mongols in the Far East, Cossacks in the North, Apaches in America, and Maoris in the Pacific.
Some of these no longer apply...
Fun fact, because a British Army Gurkha unit helped prevent an attempted coup by Indon militia in 1962, the Sultan of Brunei pays for a full battalion of British Army Gurkhas to guard Brunei, which has become the home base for British Army Gurkha units.
