Hi, i am trying to carry 2 VLANs to another area of the house
Currently i have the standard setup of BTU / Router
Just got 2 TPlink smart switch which can do VLAN and more features.
Could my plan as per diagram work?

1. Instead on getting using 2 TP-Link smart switch, it will be much better to use Mikrotik Hex R3 in place of SW1 & only use smart switch on the other end.
2. For your current setup to work, you need to connect another network cable from the router LAN port back to the SW1.
3. I think you mistakenly write 500&600 untagged for the homeplug. It should be tagged internet (not 500, maybe use 10) & iptv (600).

1. Just wanted to use back what I have on hand so didn't source for a new router.
2. Ya, sorry I missed that part out
3. U mean switch to switch should be tagged?
But why vlan10 and not 500?

Yes coz iptv & the internet are separate networks. Vlan 500 is for PPPoE & you can't connect to internet directly without PPPoE connection. The PPPoE connection is handled by your router & the internet access is via the local lan ports & untagged. For your switch to switch you need vlan trunking to pass through multiple network hence the need of vlan tagging for the internet. It is up to you to choose what vlan number to use for the internet.

wayne You PMed me about this but I'll just reply here for sake of sharing.
Here's a simplified diagram of what's in my house. It's almost exactly as what jio suggests and explained above.

If you don't want to get additional equipment but just use back the switches that you already have, it's also possible. As jio pointed out, you need one cable from the Asus back to the switch. Something like this, using your original diagram.

soonwai yea sure, dont mind sharing. but i am noobie, will ask stupid questions. really thankful for all your patience.
Ya, i will just use back whatever devices i have for now.
ok so according to the adjustments, the network should be as per diagram. apologize for the ugly diagram haha.

Question
1. So i just maintain all the connections to the Asus router? any changes for devices or gateway config?
2. Android box or any devices will still get the DHCP ip addresses from Asus router?

i will give it a test and see if it works. i am only worried bout the homeplug portion, have to test if it works. hopefully the homeplug is dumb and just pass on the traffic.

No problem. The fact that you already have 2 managed switches in your hands tells me that you're no noob. Diagram looks good. Ugly but good. smile.gif

1. Yeah, we keep the Asus in the dark. As far as it is concerned, nothing has changed.
2. Affirmative
3. No worries about the homeplugs, they will or should just pass on whatever traffic that goes into them. What brand homeplugs?

You'd be surprised. Many people, renovation time, clever clever plan ahead, pull one cable to home office, one to kids room, one to living area then suddenly realised they need 2 if they want HyppTV and internet in the living area. End up using cable for internet and homeplug for hypptv. That's me. Used a pair of home plugs for 4 years before I learnt about Mikrotik routers & VLANs.
