ASUS RT-AC86U definitely doesn't need extra cooling unlike the older ASUS RT-AC68U, but I just installed 2 fans anyway to suck the hot air out (not blow air in)

Without fans the router runs at 70°C ~ 72°C
With fans the router runs at 52°C ~ 55°C

Thanks for the info. I was thinking whether to flash Merlin fw or just stay on Asus fw.

Refer this post (and thread).

https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?act=ST&f...post&p=89782190

Many people are using it including myself..cheaper than the ones being sold specifically for routers.

Thanks rclxms.gif rclxms.gif
How you make it stick to the router? The small legs can go in between?

Hi Sifus, I have just the fans for the router. Should the wind blow in or blow out from the router? Thanks
*

I put the fans to blow in. My fan got filter.

The reason is because these fans can only helps to create better air circulation. It's not like the fans in CPU or GPU where it directly attached to the chip's heatsink which sucking-out will give immediate effect. Whether blowing-in or sucking-out it only create air circulation, by blowing-in the outside air which have dust will be filtered before going in to the modem. The remaining vents on the modem will have air going out so it prevent dust from coming in. Whereas if the fans were sucking-out air, the remaining vents will have outside air and dust going in to the modem, long term will have dust accumulated inside the modem.

Which fans that you are using with filter? How does the filter looks like? Mind to snap an image how does it looks like?
*

I'm using this fan. The seller got sell the filter too.
Lazada link
There are others that manage to find such fan being sold much cheaper, can't remember where I read it. Less than RM30 if not mistaken.

If you already got fan but don't have filter, you can simply DIY using old clothes. Panty hose the best filter.

You might want to flash the beta firmware for now
Version 9.0.0.4.386.41994 Beta Version

Security Fixed:
Fixed CVE-2020-25681, CVE-2020-25682, CVE-2020-25683, CVE-2020-25687, CVE-2020-25684, CVE-2020-25685, CVE-2020-25686

Please be noted this is a quick fix beta version for DNSmasq vulnerabilities. Refer to "Method 2: Update Manually" in https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1008000 to update this firmware.

https://kb.cert.org/vuls/id/434904
QUOTE
Dnsmasq is vulnerable to a set of memory corruption issues handling DNSSEC data and a second set of issues validating DNS responses. These vulnerabilities could allow an attacker to corrupt memory on a vulnerable system and perform cache poisoning attacks against a vulnerable environment.

The memory corruption vulnerabilities can be triggered by a remote attacker using crafted DNS responses that can lead to denial of service, information exposure, and potentially remote code execution. The DNS response validation vulnerabilities allow an attacker to use unsolicited DNS responses to poison the DNS cache and redirect users to arbitrary sites.

Is the beta version stable? I normally only flash official version
*
Not sure, I'm trying merlin firmware now.
You can save the router settings before flash the firmware, if not stable then flash back the old firmware and then restore it's settings.
