speaking of boot times, i have a friend with NVMe Sammy 960 pro installed

he used to enjoy blazing fast booting times after shutdowns. but recently he told me his bootups can last as long as 5mins shocking.gif

tested at his place yty, even after setting his BIOS to Ultra Fast, we managed to whittle down to about 1 1/2 mins.

symptoms begin after he pressed start on casing, then it takes pretty damn long for even to POST, before taking awhile for system to go to Windows splash and just loading longer with windows loading circle. once thats all done tho and logged in, everything is just as snappy as ever

what could be problem? hmm.gif
*
Based on my past experience, broken HDD.
Windows will attempt to power up the hdd after bios, if the hdd went bad, it will just keep detecting untill gives up, then finally boot into windows.
just my assumption though, bad ext hdd could be another cause too.

Or ssd going kaput sweat.gif

The other HDDs are plugged externally

whelp, fingers crossed not the SSD, thatll be quite an expensive replacement

Is my Samsung PM951 128gb M.2 (NVMe) write speed being throttled?
I am on Lenovo laptop.

Meanwhile my desktop Samsung 850 Evo 250gb SSD smokes the PM951 like no tomorrow.

you get the big numbers because of rapid mode, nvme ssd doesnt support rapid mode.

1T entry level SSD should be around RM500+ ....now is still too expensive....
*
Already quite affordable, back then 64gb see costs almost 1k if I recall correctly.
Just beware some of the cheap see does not have dram, one of them is from crucial.

advice needed
im looking for a budget ssd for my old core 2 quad pc. probably arnd rm300++
find with 240gb or 480gb if possible
which ssd perform best with this citeria?
*
I don't know the Msia pricing, but 806 evo 240GB is selling at 109 SGD, a little bit high higher but imho it worth the price as it comes with software that can easily update your firmware, configure SSD provisioning, ect.
Also supporting RAPID mode is a plus too.
Don't skimp on it to get some low grade SSD(no dram or shitty controller) which later you'll only end up headache.

So much poison... I am also debating between getting

Crucial MX500 1TB for RM721
https://www.lazada.com.my/products/crucial-...s617148716.html

or

Samsung 960 EVO NVMe M.2 500GB for RM790
https://www.lazada.com.my/products/samsung-...s638123853.html

I don't mind Crucial MX500's 500MB/s, 1GB DRAM and 1TB capacity, but tempted by the 960 Evo's 3200mb/s read speed (but description page was for Western D??)
*
For performance definitely go for m.2, it make no sense to got Crucial; MX500 as its bottlencked by SATA interface, unless your mobo is too old to use nvme.

I brought 1TB MX500 purely for games loading, so it doesn't help much? I had a 860 Evo for boot up purpose, which SSD is better for gaming purpose? Hmm
*
The Samsung Rapid mode only start after windows fully loaded, though the performance already quite good.
For gaming, SSD only helps if your games requires frequent loading, eg. Tomb Raider Series.

imho the MX500 1tb already good enough.

Why you should not get cheap SSD, unless you only use it for light usage, or it's really dirt cheap.

TL;DR version, DRAM less SSD has terrible performance, and potentially has lesser TWB/endurancethan normal SSD with DRAM cache.

gpt if possible

Ok, which software is easy to use for cloning into this ssd.
*

If you have WD drive, try to use Acronis True Image WD Edition, its free but the only requirement to run the software is having one WD drive on system, clean up your junk file on C drive before doing so.

But honestly i have never used Acronis for decades. sweat.gif one of the advantage of this software is, you can copy and and resize your partition too fit into your SSD.
Some cloning software will just complain the destination drive to small thus refuse to work sweat.gif

Just use it normally would do, you buy expensive SSD for the performance right?, by the time it reach the limit you already upgraded it to newer SSD biggrin.gif

Most of the programs we use already fully utilize the SSD capability, they all stores the cache file on system drive by default(Chrome/FFx).
Audio/video/image editing program caches history in Temp drive which is also on C drive.

To reduce the wear/tear just move your Document/Download/Desktop/Temp folder HDD drives.

disk mark is benchmarking software, disk info checks storage drive smart status.

dont bench mark too frequently as well, by default CDM write 1 or 2 GB worth of random data to your SSD sweat.gif

Your budget? laptop model? alternative choice?
As for the SSD, general use is OK only, you get what you paid for.

What's the best capacity for OS SSD?
*
128GB, but really depends, some software can't be installed separately on different drive, for example google chrome, visual studio 2017 (partially)
256 for more breathing space.

Most of my software and game are installed on HDD, only those important are on SSD.

64gb barely enough these days, windows update backup files is huge(17gb iirc) .

Use Jeti brand PCIE card + Samsung PM981.  It is definitely better than SATA 3 speed and Very cheap is around RM250.

SSD 860 EVO 500GB vs Crucial MX500 500GB which one is less rma for sata 3 ?
btw
How do we know m.2 nvme are fully on the pcie bus  ?

as for NVMe , having 2 pcie x16 slot on motherboard but one already use up for Graphic card.
does x2 x4 x16 mode on pcie or 3.0 2.0 have any effect on speed ?

To check the Bus speed, use CrystalDiskInfo, or Samsung Magician.
Are you using m2 SSD on PCIE slot? if yes then it will be affected, can't say how much % but typical usage is hardly noticeable.
Normally m.2 slot shared with SATA ports on some mobo (m2 has higher priority than sata), so far I haven't seen any m2 slot shares bandwidth with pcie slot yet.

Visited the website, it's half-functioning, definitely nope for me.
And most budget SSD on market more or less are the same, most of them just buy NAND/Controller from various vendor, so there's nothing special on them.

Do you need a fan to cool the Nvme ? How much added with shipping cost ?

Does trim auto enable on windows 7 SP1 ? Plan to install multiple OS and VM.

Does always R/W on SSD degrade the lifespan because as basic , normally most Browser will have auto download function directory set to my Download folder and I always download drop by into the folder example , youtube video / programs and etc.

I don't have much cash on 1TB at most as some forumer suggest RM600 crucial.

The case is , whether H87 PCIE x4 speed affect Nvme speed.

The backup , I don't know how to explain maybe I create a thread for it.Example : 200GB size backup on normal Mechanical HDD and restore on a 500GB SSD.
I don't know whether it will work well.
Some mention doing a fresh install but most program need to reinstall.
*
1. trim is enabled by default for SSD, unless you're running outdated Win7.

2. R/W will degrade it, but you buy it for the speed right? For download folder, it can be relocated to other folder, ezpz
2a. most browser have profile folder hidden deep inside your Main drive which is C:, it can't be changed, all the cache are stored there to optimize speed.
2b. unless you're running portable version of Firefox/Chrome, then their caches are stored on same directory.
2c. larger SSD has longer life span, SSD with DRAM is the same too.

3. you don't need a fan to cool it, improve your case ventilation first. adding fan while your pc has high ambient temp is not going to help much.
3a. you could add heatsink if the SSD is just above your hot GPU, or under it.

Something to add:
Virtual memory, or paging file, by default is large as your system ram, is enable by default, will take up at least 8GB of SSD space if your ram is 8GB.
Can be reduced to 4GB or just maintain at 8GB, but don't disable it completely as some application will crash or will not work without it.

SSD is expensive per GB compares too HDD, hence some tweaking still required, if you're using laptop with just single SSD, then the amount of tweaking is lesser due to lack of HDD.

Hey there, I've just installed an old laptop with a SSD. Is there any guide or resource you can lead me to for tweaking settings?
Laptop is running windows 7 64bit. A Dell Inspiron 1440.
*
For starter, google the keywords
1. disable system restore, this one can be reduce or completely disable.
2. disable hibernation, or reduce hyberfil.sys file size, if you use hybernate, reduce file size, or just disable it, via command line.
3. reduce page file size.

For huge file download from internet, you can save it to network drive, if your router support SMB access to hdd that connected to router.
