Smaller SSD have shorter durability due to repeated read and write (or program/erase... PE cycles). So recommended to get 480GB or larger
*
More specifically, small SSD with TLC, TLC has shorter life span than MLC and SLC,
They got QLC somewhere already and in the market, PLC is the next cheap and short life span ssd next.

you have to check for review, reputable review site is preferred as they provide more insight on the tech specification rather than simply showing benchmark result.

The old notebook computer came with a licensed Windows 8.1 and it was upgraded to Windows 10. Since I son't have the Windows key and I thought it could be easier to clone the Windows from old HDD to new SSD, then replace the old HDD with the new SSD.

since you have upgraded its os to w10 on your old laptop, there is no need for key for subsequent clean installs. (just skip the screens which ask for it) as long as your computer was activated and online before, without major hardware changes, you can do clean installs, and get it activated, simply by connecting it to the internet after that.

the key is in the bios of your laptop. you can use rweverything to retrieve it.

edit: in your case, you can replace the ssd first, then do a clean install. major hardware changes mean motherboard or cpu. storage such as ssd and hdd is not one of them.

For OEM/prebuilt computers (I.E. Dell, Acer, HP, Lenovo & ETC) you don't need the Windows key as the key is embedded into the motherboard
Windows will detect the key automatically during installation

Microsoft has made Windows 10 very easy to install even for first timers. So there is no need to clone disks anymore

Hi, today I got a friend send me an old laptop, which got a broken HDD..

Considering this is an old laptop(year 2011, god know how he manage to keep that alive while I burn 2 laptops in 4 years tongue.gif ) and he will eventually buy a desktop rig, I wonder what SATA ssd will be the best with a mere RM150 budget just to get it up and running till his new pc is done..If possible hope can get a good one with okayish dram cache..

Thanks in advance

License key is on your motherboard.

To see actual key, use software like showkey plus to extract.
Else, just install fresh copy of windows on SSD and Windows should automatically detect the license key and activate it as it is.

Got. Kingston UV500.

I would advise getting 240GB version for better GB per ringgit.

horns Does SSD tweak still relevant now on windows ? such as disable index cache and Hibernate ?
I saw most laptops using ssd having index on and sleep/hibernate enable.
Some other tweak like disable system restore , defrag off , reduce page files size on windows 10 ?

Or nowadays window 7 or 10 doesn't need any of it already ?

ssd tweaks are optional system optimizations in general, and its practicality depends on several things, including system hardware (e.g., how you set it up), os features that you wish to use, and your usage.

if none of them affects your daily usage, you can choose to apply them, or not. in my case, i still apply most of them in my older laptops.

If you're on old OS, you need to tweak some, system restore can be disabled, dont touch the page file, some program wont work or will crash without it
Windows 10? none needed https://www.howtogeek.com/256859/dont-waste...what-its-doing/

Normally I always goes to sleep but I am not too sure on windows 10 hibernate which put all your savestate from ram to ssd.most default laptop will auto sleep or hibernate if idle over 30 minutes.
Still I will apply a few tweaks on Windows 7 but I think windows 10 is fine since it's optimize for ssd.
