there will be signs but it might be too late when you notice those. the better way is to store data in a separate physical disk, then performs regular data backups. monitor ssd/hdd health from time to time. (crystaldiskinfo can be very helpful in this case)

uh? don't worry about it haha my work involve running multiple vms that do various stuff (i need them to have sufficient iops for each, so that they can complete tasks faster)

there are a number of free sync tools, like freefilesync and cryptsync. (plenty more if you looked them up with search engines)

3d-tlc is said to be very close to planar-mlc in terms of endurance (nowadays it should be slc > 3d-mlc > planar/ 2d-mlc ? 3d-tlc > planar/2d-tlc)

these days, firmware in ssd is stable in general. however, shit does happen. just peek on the support page for new ones occasionally (better yet, use the tool that is provided by manufacturer to check it out for you)
*
The best method is to daily check for slow down and with crytalmark. There are some tools like to test ssd failure rate http://mashtips.com/ssd-health-test-and-pe...-monitor-tools/, and for global is crystalmark ?

Don't know which vms you are mentioning.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VMS.So are you using windows for SSD ?

Thanks for the free sync tools biggrin.gif

( slc > 3d-mlc > planar/ 2d-mlc ? 3d-tlc > planar/2d-tlc ) Thanks for the hierarchy.
There are quite a lot of manufactuerr and controller.Among all , trust able is samsung ? in comparison chart ? I read crucial mx500 using Silicon Motion.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_flash...r_manufacturers
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_solid...e_manufacturers

Where can I search for the support page as you mention ?

Normally , when you buy a SSD do you pick on which seller at shopee/lazada to buy ?
eg: https://shopee.com.my/search?keyword=evo%20...ue&sortBy=price
There are a bunch selling mx500 and evo 860 but don't know which I should choose

As for sata evo 860 or 850.I search both are the same performance.MX500 also the same with 3d-TLC.
What are the price range for them ? Search around is RM350-450 for 500GB but worrying choose the cheap come with lemon unit by seller.
Any reliable seller list ? Thanks smile.gif

crystal diskinfo or the bundle software that comes with the ssd should be sufficient enough to check smart status. there is no need to check daily haha

yes i use w10. for vm software, mainly virtualbox, vms are linux in different distros. you can set them up so that the vms recognize its os drive is on ssd with virtualbox.

for ssd controllers, you can check out their specifications and compare them if it really matters to you. to me the most basic feature to look at is the number of channels it can support. (the more the merrier. it's for parallelism. some controllers have less channel counts. normally, mainstream ssds will come with controllers that have sufficient channels. also note that not all features in the specifications are enabled. it's still up to the manufacturer) again it's still important to look at real-world performance. (usually provided by reviews) i use samsung's because it's just a personal preference. i have other drives from intel, crucial and plextor too. they are all fine.

it's the support page for the ssd that you have, like https://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minis...download/tools/ for samsung ssds.

er i don't have a favorite seller list. i just followed recommendations posted by other members here haha

for sata ssds, i guess both samsung's and crucial's are fine. (they're categorized as mainstream, not entry-level) if you're worried just get local units.

Nope , I didn't mean that. What I mention is from online shopee/laz and which seller is trust-able.I know some sellers are 3rd party and reject every return and direct buyer to send to the distro for warranty , not willing to help buyer to claim.Service is more important than price.

Since when do you have to rely on seller to do RMA?
Most manufacturers you can claim directly from the distributor. That's why all hardware stuff always comes with a sticker that states who is their distributor
Some brands can even claim directly with the manufacturer itself such as Seagate, Western Digital, Crucial, ASUS (local units only, not imported units) & some other brands as well

it may depend on your mobo..

as the most supportable mobo started from 4th gen proc i.e haswell

mobo like z97

then z170

z270

h370

pair the 760p with, high end mobo and let us know again

if it's a dell desktop. there should be a set of official drivers provided at support page at dell. you can use the service number or model number of your desktop to look them up. (also you can obtain service manual and hardware data sheets from the dell support page)

i'm not sure what limits the speed. it could be the number of pcie lanes associated to the port that your ssd is installed, or bios settings that you need to change to make it work, or something else.

if you need help, just give us more information regarding your desktop and how you set it up in terms of this ssd.

alternatively, you can use intel toolbox to check if it can identify your drive.

Currently looking for a ssd, considering between a 2.5 sata cruxial mx500 1tb or m.2 adata sx8200 pro 500gb.

Current spec
I5 6600 stock
Asus z270e (i know its overkill for the cpu)
An old kingston ssd 120gb

Want to replace the kingston ssd as boot drive and use as steam library. Seeking for advice, thanks

If it's speed you want, go for the m.2.

If it's capacity you want, go for the 1tb.
