Hi all sifus' and brother sister in this thread, I'm new to foldie therefore appreciate if someone can explain the difference between these two bike.
a) Mongoose Shimano 21 Speed folding bike, around RM500++

https://shopee.com.my/20''-Folding-...ing%2520bicycle

b) Java Fit 9 Speed, around RM1400
https://shopee.com.my/!!-PROMOSI-LA...9454.1987507053

My question is, since both also use Shimano as gear, and Mongoose offers 21 speed. So, is Mongoose is better than Java Fit ?
If I were to buy Mongoose, is it a wise decision or I should save more to buy Java Fit ?
Of course I know most sifu here would say no this is not only about gear. Appreciate if someone could explain it to me. Thank you in advance!!

last time (i think around 7 years ago), i was like u. mongoose offer me 24 speed.wow!
but after a while cycling with the bike, i do noticed that my crank are smaller than other folding bike and ended up buying a new crank. after that, i start upgrading many parts such as wheelset and so on.

i assume u saw the mongoose is 3x7 speed = 21 speed. usually, 7speed bike used cogset, and its hard for u to upgrade later. same like my mongoose.

moral of the story,
dont just see how many speed they are. determined what u want. smaller crank are good for climbing, but too much cadence on flat road. tern verge x20 priced for 10k also use 20speed, how come monggose with 21speed are better than 10k bike?

about java fit is 9 speed, u might as well had an opportunity to upgrade to 10s later if u wanted too, coz the wheelset is freehub. and if im not mistaken java fit is 2x9 speed = 18speed. some oldies folk like to determine speed based on rear casette. they dont care much about 2x9 or 3x9.

oh ya, talking about gearset.
shimano had many range of gearset. as low as tourney until duraace for rb or xtr for mtb, and all of them come with different pricetag, different feel for different purpose. is like perodua with low range car as kancil to nautica or aruz. is it the same since all are perodua cars?

folding bike most likely will use road crankset, at least 50t and above with mixture of road or mtb casette. rd mostly can rojak depends on what shifter ur wanted.

hope i can clear ur thoughts icon_rolleyes.gif

i only have one opinion - if leg no power, give you 3x11 oso no use. so just get whatever you feel like it first and start training your legs. once your legs are powerful enough, even ride single speed also can tapau the group.

That day I ride my adik ipar punya Bike, that bike got 3 chain rings, 8 speed.
Kelam kabut i jadi. Too many front chain rings also can be confusing.

So, double chain rings sudah cukuplah, i rasa. Tak perlu triple.

Saya juga jenis pemalas tukar gear
But Especially naik bukit kena tukar la, cannot escape. Kaki tak kuat juga.
I switched pinjam to use my adik ipar punya bike. 3 chain rings. I always confused which gear when down hill.
That's why, I very much prefer flat roads. use only 1 chain ring. Less tukar gear. Can use the same gear through out the whole ride. 😀

Hehe 3 x. Very confusing indeed too.
I was testing my brother in law bike
I changed gears till chain fell off from rear cassette or front rings. Lol
I really noob at 3x 🤪
I change left and right shifters too fast during inclination , dunno what gears until chain drop many times. 🤪

I'll stick to 2x, more than sufficient on flats. Or even on a bit hilly terrain

How can u confuse? Shifter there got indicate ma...

Mine is a 3x8. Most of the time front chainring I only alternate between middle and the largest one. So in a way of saying, it's like a 2x lah. Of this few months of flat road riding, very very rare I would be using the smallest chainring. But it's good to know that you have it when you need it. Like when climbing a steep incline, for example Dragonback 1st and last slope.
