Malaysians term for LRT and MRT are a bit blurred as now they are a mish mash of each other.
LRT (Light Rail Transit) – any form of rail transport lighter than heavy train coaches like inter-state / inter-city trains. Limited seats. Somehow in Malaysia our LRT fuctions have been overlapping with MRT. Some say that last time we shouldn’t wasted money to build LRT.. shud build MRT directly.. but that time cronies were different.
MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) – integrated light rail transits that are designed to reduce usage of personal vehicles, i.e location wise are connecting major housing areas to city centre spots, and business districts. Limited seats. Design with interconnections to other public transport. Has dedicated bus service attached.
Monorail – in city centre, short tracks, short coaches, maximized standing, no seats, Supposedly designed to connect major tourist, business districts, and shopping malls.
Komuter – Inter-city commute trains. Heavier coaches, longer intervals, have multiple comfy seats for all passangers. Can makan2 and drink.
ETS – successor to our old inter-state diesel powered slow moving train coaches. ETS are electric based and modern. Long haul. Have cafeterias.
What's the difference between ktm, lrt, mrt etc?
