Hey guys,

How's it going? I have an MBP 13" that I bought awhile back. The battery is dead and the speaker is broken too.

I have an MBA 11" now and I use it more often. Should I sell my MBP 13", repair it or keep it?

I think the value of the MBP 13" is not that fantastic either.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

If you think you're gonna use the 13", repair it.
If not, just sell it off better than collecting dust.

I had the same dilemma when my sister's old MBP 13" early 2011 had a lot of issues. First the battery was completely flat and dead, so it needed to be plugged into the power at all times. Then the MBP ran extremely slow and the trackpad wasn't working at all. Initially i thought that I wanted to trade it in but decided to just get it repaired and see if I could repurpose it.

I brought it Wei at Mac Cores Solution at Kota Damansara and he immediately found out what was wrong with it. When a MBP battery is dead, the laptop will run extremely slow. So I got him to help me swap out the battery, install in a new SSD and removed the optical drive and use the old HDD as a secondary drive. On top of that he cleaned the internals, gave the heatsink some new thermal paste and tightened the monitor hinge.

Now I am extremely pleased with it because the MBP 13" works perfectly and fast now. Enough for my office productivity work and for my side gig writing articles online. Apple has really done a great job being able to make a laptop which is already almost 7 years old still work so smoothly and fast. Btw I am writing this with that laptop now!

'When a MBP battery is dead, the laptop will run extremely slow.'

I think the SSD helps speed up the process. Will the battery affects the laptop's performance?

Yes, if the battery is dead, the laptop will run extremely slow. Regardless of what HDD you use. It's a system thing.

Yeah, although I don't really need the Wireless AC as well as the USB 3. Using the MBP now for light work and writing which works perfectly well. thumbup.gif

Repairing would have costed me RM1k so I decided to sell it. I'm now RM300 richer nod.gif

It depends on your usage of the laptop. I do have to agree that MS Office still works best on a Windows laptop and if that is your main applications that you use, definitely it is the best choice to swap over to a Windows Laptop.

Getting used to Windows 10 is quite easy, but watching movies on Windows is still a horrible experience for me compared to the Mac last time. But with apps being available for all platforms, that is a thing of the past. Just that the screens of the Macbook Pro is quite nice compared to a lower resolution screen on a Windows laptop.

The hassle to add subtitle sometime in Mac really gets me 😅 As time goes, i still not able to utilize Mac 100% just like my Windows pc in office

Wowo sounds good. How much did the repair cost? I've an 09 model that runs decently but I'm considering having the HD swapped and the optical drive removed (a bit wonkey and I have and external writer). Otherwise it runs pretty nicely.

About RM1k for all of the work done on the laptop. It may be pricey but now the laptop meets all of my current needs and I managed to sell off my other laptops as well.

Actually bro I reckon that's not too bad, considering the price of an SSD anyway. Hmmm I may do it too sometime in the future. HD storage is wonderful but it is a slower. However still usable.

I miss the old machines that were made when Jobs was still alive. Sturdy stuff. My iBook lasted me 6 years and was still working when I sold it off in 2009.

I sold my MBP 13" 2011 for RM1450, battery spoiled and very slow already. Best decision I have made, should've done it earlier and get newer one.

I walked around Lowyat and asked the sellers. Most of them accept buying second hand laptop, find the price that you likes. The sellers on the main area in the middle accept cheaper lah.

Definitely you can do that, but based on TS's needs, bootcamp doesn't seem to be the option.

I got same dilemma as u and I make a decision to repair it.

But bear in mind, mbp are not cheap to repair and if I want newer laptop, I can only afford macbook air

Which is for me, red flag.

Lol. Same goes to me. Changed into 256gb SSD at Mac Core Solution and it become blazing fast after that.

So it's time to migrate to common laptop....
