I use it as access point.

Disable dhcp. Connect LAN to LAN port.

Oh and I set up the ssid to be different from the main router.(different floors of the house)
The problem with this is. Your phone might not connect to the strongest signal.

So manually toggle connect.
Other ap solution can setup the host to disconnect clients if the signal drops below a level.

So you aren't linking these 2 routers up via wireless?

Wireless is too lousy a connection. Definitely worth it to run cables for access point.

Wireless signal don't cut thru brick and concrete that well.

2.4ghz still can pass thru ~4 walls.

5ghz is not capable of passing thru any wall...

That's the speed i'm getting in my Japan office. 2Gbps down / 3 Gbps actual speed up for about RM85 per month. Won' be long to fill up my 3TB ext drive.

May be I said wrongly. Main router is on 1st floor. My intention is to use an old router on the 2nd floor floor to boost the wifi coming from the main router located downstairs. Now sure what you call that, access point or repeater?

Since C5 dont have build in repeater/range extender mode, you will need LAN cable access from ur 1st floor to ur 2nd floor and use the instruction by skywardsword to set up the 2nd router. Since access point is the most stable options. Otherwise, spend more money on repeater/homeplug/powerline. You cant connect ur C5 wirelessly.

Sorry for not making myself clear.

I have a higher end router set as the main router for Unifi. And want to use the old TP Link Archer C5 as a secondary unit to extend my wifi to the other floor. Possible? Thanks

Yes, but as prokiller1199 have already mentioned, you will need LAN cable access from your 1st floor to the 2nd floor, and follow the instructions to set up the TP Link Archer C5, as an access point. You can't do it wirelessly.

CS' words can only be trusted half. If you are not urgent in getting UniFi, I suggest you to wait till Budget 2018 which will be announced on 27th Oct.

I didn't say I'm sure? Did I?
Since Budget 2018 is coming soon, who knows what the PM will announce. So, if not urgent in getting it, why can't wait? If urgent, then go ahead.
