Is it true older cameras cannot use 2GB+ sd cards?

there is a certain truth to it..
i tried using my 2mega panasonic lumix (4 years old camera) with a 1gb card. can get like 1260 shots.. tried with 2gb card.. display like 2380 shot.. but i didnt manage to capture to that limit.. |

generally cam that manufactured before jun2006 can support max 2gb.
SDHC comes after that, >2gb. |

i tried use a 2gb cf card on my old canon PnS. cannot detect the card at all.
