With the sort of money that the TV stations make, I'm sure they can afford to hire some part-timers to track each player. After all, they already have all the statisticians to calculate the number of passes, assists, goals, etc..

tracking a position u need atleast 2 camera focusing on a point. and then use the Pythagorean theorem to find. I dun think they use such a lame method. Grassy different color could be another method, but different field(like chelsea field, man utd field) they got different pattern(but what if they are running vertically instead of crossing the field horizontally?). it should have some syncronizing method out there....

its just another stat
those who really look into them as in analyzers, perhaps can make use of it to perhaps gauge how industrious the player is may suggest for the club to get that player

A combination of hardware ( bank of networked video cameras installed in major stadiums and ice hockey arenas) and highly touted image recognition and video processing software not only to compute players' stats including distance covered but a slew of features (there is no end to options) such as players and club team performance benchmarking. Included in this also database of visiting teams performances strengths and weaknesses. Just imagine Arsenal deploy this in their runup to S-finals meet with MU and EPL match of the season.

Twenty five or more years ago we had in theory image and video processing techniques and algorithms but not able to implement them for lack of powerful processors.

Yes today however the advent and proliferation of powerful desktop 'supercomputers' (Pentium 4 min and high end video graphic processor cards) that lend itself even to arming 'Big Brother' watching and tracking us.

No. they are not using radio tracking devices (so no GPS) on the players as it is disallowed. However radar tracking is curently under trials.
