- Because you can boot from firewire not from USB.
- Because firewire have better sustain read & write. Eventhough USB do have a higher burse speed 450mbps vs 400mbps.
- Because on most firewire devices, you can daisy chain them.
- Because almost every Mac come with it.
- Because when we have Firewire 800 (800mbps) our PC friend still toying with USB2.
- Because when they have Mac with Firewire 400, USB still at slow USB 1. Many existing users will go for firewire naturally.

haha, couldn't find a good illustration to show u. Basically is chain up a few device.
Most commonly found is external harddrive. There's normally 2 firewire port found on most firewire casing. So you can do:

Macbook ---> external harddisk 1 ---> external harddisk 2 ---> external harddisk 3 ---> and so on.
