Try to be a little impartial lads. For me it's

a) Cassilas
b) Jaaskalainen
c) Niemi
d) Given

Cassilas is the not necessarily my favourite but he's the best in the world at the moment if you ask me.

RM not playing well doesn't change the fact that i rate Casillas as the best currently; not one of the best....The Best
The fact that we are 3rd and 5 pts of the leaders despite playing like a mid table team is because of him. While some may heap praise on a GK when he pulls off an amazing safe in a match, I have seen Casillas pull off 3-5 world class saves in a match week in week out like it was a normal day in the office. If there was a GK in the EPL who puts in that kind of performance every week he would have been hailed as godly by the English media tongue.gif

Well said, he's definitely my favorite player at Madrid. Without him, we could possibly in the UEFA Cup. Not forgetting to factor in Madrid's leaky defense.

no offence la but i think u are really harsh on EPL keepers. i mean, i think every one sees the immense talent that CASILLAS (correct spelling now tongue.gif doh.gif) but to say that EPL keepers arent able to pull off 3-5 super saves per match is not the keepers' fault. i mean, madrid are in a situation where the defenders leave him out to dry but Cech and other great keepers make super saves when called upon. i mean, how many times do we see Cech really need to go out and make super stops compared to Casillas. having said that, Casillas really has been the best for quite a while. shocking.gif

My avatar tells my answer tongue.gif

Spain power...They're blessed with the most talented keeper around. Even their 3rd choice keeper is simply world class...

Unlike England. Robinson is okay but once he's out the next in line is....You know the one whom Robinson scored against 2 weeks back.

he is juz simply too reliable and steady goalkeeper...
hard to see a striker to score through him...
and i have to admit he is da best keeper in da world..

1)petr cech
2)buffon
3)valdes
4)casillas
5)van der sar (best keeper when he is at juventus time and da man who will bring glory to man utd soon..!!!!)

Real would have lost more games and conceded more goals if not for Casillas's brilliance in goal. not as tall as Cech and not as big as Schmeichel. but still an amazing goalkeeper.

My vote for current best/favourite goalkeeper goes to Petr Cech.
All time best/favourite goalkeeper goes to Ray Clemence.

I don't rate VDS at all. I think he won't be in the list if he still playing for Fulham. Peter Schmeichel is no doubt a good keeper during his time but if he is playing today, he is still falling behind Cech in my list.

Well if you say that, then you also have to consider legends like Lev Yashin (The Black Panther), Gordon Banks, Joel Bats, Dino Zoff and Andoni Zubizaretta.

Schmeichel was indeed a brilliant goalkeeper but to say that the like of Cassilas and Buffon are nowhere near his level is just naive if you ask me.

Reina came to Liverpool with a reputation for saving penalties with Villareal. Since then he's enhanced his reputation against West Ham and now Chelsea. He's broken Ray Clemence's record of reaching 55 clean sheets in 100 games for the club. He won the 'Golden Gloves' award last season with 20 clean sheets, ahead of VDS and Cech. This season, he's so far kept the most clean sheets as well. Some people have chosen to remember his for his errors but the stats above says it all really. Pepe is a class keeper with a great future.

reasons why buffon isnt world class

1) no one watches serie A
2) he makes too little saves in comparison to cassilas or casillas or whatever his damned name is
3) not spectacular enough
4) dammit he plays for italy, they barely let teams have a shot, let alone having buffon save them

He's not even your best keeper ever. That distinction goes to Peter Schmeichel, and I'm sure most Man Utd fans will not disagree with that. You obviously aren't old enough to have seen the great Dane in goal.

Kirkland and Carroll have been injured or on the bench tongue.gif

Casillas and Given looks so good because their back four not very good defensively. They have to the job week in week out because of that. And they also look so good because of their size. They're not too tall compare to the like of Cech or VDS. Small size keeper looks nice when they make a save because they have to stretch and dive acrobatically. While the giant size goal keeper rarely stretch.

You must remember; Juve has got the great super defender Jean-Alain Boumsong.

To be honest; as a Fulham fan; Van der Sar is past his prime. This season and the last; he's looked terribly weak, especially at range. Still solid at near range, but very poor against ranged shots. You should have seen him when he first played for Fulham. That's the Van Der Sar his reputation was built on.

i rate Bruce Grobbelaar as the best keeper i've ever seen. Peter Schmeichel come second. I like Peter Schmeichel bcos he has a great leadership character in defence. But both of them are retired. cry.gif
The current best keeper i think should be Petr Cech, no doubt. Van Der Sar is a good keeper but he makes a lot of mistakes and can't hold fierce shot. I like Gigi Buffon and Andres Palop, they are good.

oh come on, not that i hav something against u or wanna offend u, but frankly speaking i think for someone to get piss-off by that line is juz kinda narrow-minded. not that i had dished out a truck load of insults to MU or what.

n i never say anything abt Italians are the best, bla bla bla... did i ever said that ? even if i did said that, that will b my own opinion. whats the difference with many who claim that someone in their team is the best of something ?

well lets get over it shall we ? this 'debate' is really unnecessary. biggrin.gif

why?

because i am a Man utd fan!!!!!

you must be joking shakehead.gif
who is the best? VDS is not even in Peter Schmeichel class.
You surely don't call yourself a Manchester United fan if you don't even know the Great Dane.
QUOTE(Duke Red @ May 4 2007, 09:03 AM)
Best reason ever! How old are you again?

He's not even your best keeper ever. That distinction goes to Peter Schmeichel, and I'm sure most Man Utd fans will not disagree with that. You obviously aren't old enough to have seen the great Dane in goal.
*
Yes, agree with you. And I think he joined in because of glory hunting
QUOTE(TeckPeow @ May 4 2007, 07:02 PM)
look at the poll, brother.... Van der Sar is leading...

Fact doesn't lie!!!!

He is the best keeper... end of. rolleyes.gif

You surely never read the title.
Just go youtube and search peter schmeichel.
There are tons of his extraordinary saves that you think it is unlikely to happen.
Just look at how he saves and why we put him as 1 of the world's best goalie.

You said he was the best keeper EVER you fool. He may be amongst the best keepers now but to say he was your best keeper ever is just showing your ignorance. I've seen your posts on other threads and you're one of those "We are the best!" posters. Piss off and come back when you develop some substance.

Up until today, I'm probably the only person I know that is wondering how Barthez was nominated goalkeeper of the tournament back then. I have always had a fascination for goalkeepers and pay particular attention to them. I remember Barthez playing behind an excellent back four and the only reason I can imagine he won the accolade, was because he conceded the least amount of goals, if I remember correctly. Much of it though was down to the defenders. I mean no offence to Man Utd supporters, but I've always thought of him as just an average goalkeeper. Well maybe a little above average, but definitely overrated by many. That's just my opinion.

the most fantastic saved by barthez in my memory was a superb world class saved against hamann bullet shot when united was leading 2-1 notworthy.gif rclxms.gif in anfield few season ago...the forlan brace if not mistaken....it could be 2-2 if not his heroic...

the most funniest stuff by him is the superb dive against deportivo and gifted depor a goal through tristan biggrin.gif

A little OT but this save by Gordon Banks from Pele is until today, touted by many to be the greatest save ever made. Banks dives down low to his right to lift Pele's goal bound header over the top post. The camera angle doesn't do justice to the quality of the save though.

I remembered he made some very acrobatic saves, can't pin point which match though, I was only 8 that time. But the only two players I noticed in the tournament were Zidane and him.

Rogerio Ceni. He should be playing with great clubs, Sao Paolo is a great club, maybe not a rich one, but definitely up there with the best.

Buffon, perhaps one of the world's best, but if his team goes to penalty shoot-outs, I'd be very, very nervous.

People are too focused with abilities like anticipation penalties, good shot stopping ability, comes out for crosses, etc. I'm more focused on the attributes of a goalkeeper, e.g. focused, quick reflexes, confident, commanding, etc. When you develop good attributes, everything else like anticipating penalties and such, fall into place.

I don't think he meant you conceded more this season mate. What he meant was your defence was weaker this season because Terry and Carvalho were being hindered by injuries unlike last season. Inspite of this, you have a conceded less than this season and much of it must be attributed to Cech. Thus his high regard for the Czech Cech.

given already a proven goalie in epl...only his reluctantly to leave NU make others club dun make a bid...

same to jussi and niemi, doesn't in the option list doesn't mean no good...else we will get 50 options to choose...

not suprise if next season fergie sign niemi as replacement for vds if vds quit football

I support Liverpool but i voted for BUffon
the poll listed a list of great goalkeepers
especially Ricardo....glad to know that he is not underestimated..
my top 3
Buffon,Kahn,Casillas.
lehmann is good but will nvr beat Kahn(he is legend)
Reina is v good too....juz i tink he needs to do more....
Toldo is v so close to match those legendary goalkeepers when he was with fiorentina..but i juz tink he is not that good yet...
Cech and VDS are definitely superb goalkeepers but i still tink my top 3 are in a higher level and different class....
v bias opinion from me....

p/s: I select Kahn bcoz he is one of the best among the goalkeeper still playing now...obviously his performance has dropped now due to aging....
cech will come into top replacing him if it's about current ability....

I agree that Casillas and Kahn (in his prime) are better keepers but at the same time, I think many people underrate Reina. He commands his area well and he is excellent in one on one situations. He is also really quick off his line which minimises the number of point blank saves he has to make. It's kinda like how Hamann is exceptional at intercepting passes without having to make lunging tackles. He is also a really good passer of the ball. Many times has his goal kicks started attacking moves. Lastly, he is good at penalties having never been on the losing end of any competitive penalty shootouts.

I almost forgot to mention that in a little over 2 seasons, he has 49 clean sheets which has already won him 2 Golden Gloves (again, is his first 2 seasons). Not all good goalkeepers have to dive all over the pitch to make dramatic saves. Some cut out the danger before it comes to having to do that.

little info about buffon..
QUOTE
Buffon was awarded his first cap for Italy when he was only 19 years old, as an injury replacement for Gianluca Pagliuca during a 1998 FIFA World Cup play-off against Russia. He was called up for the 1998 World Cup finals, but did not play a single game as Pagliuca remained first choice. He was a member of the Italy squad at the 1996 Summer Olympics, the 2002 World Cup and Euro 2004.

He kept seven clean sheets in addition to a 453-minute scoreless streak during the 2006 World Cup finals; the only goals conceded were an own goal from teammate Cristian Zaccardo against the United States, and a Zinedine Zidane penalty in the final against France, which ended scoreless in extra time and led to a penalty shootout in which neither Buffon or Fabien Barthez could make a save. The lone miss was David Trezeguet's effort that clanged off the bottom of the crossbar and failed to cross the line, which enabled Italy to emerge victorious. Buffon received the Yashin Award for his accomplishments throughout the competition.

Iker Casilas is the best currect goal keeper..he made alot of incredible save n help his team to victory n sometimes avoid defeat..

Van Der Sar is my personal fav..too bad he joined Man Utd late..

yup.. and i think that casillas is far more agile than buffon... casillas have really made all sorts of incredible saves which really amazes you of what he is capable of... although buffon has a far more greater record, but pls do notw also that buffon have better defenders playing in front of him than casillas... if one compares the defense of juventus and real madrid, who would you think will excel?? most certainly juventus!! nod.gif

no offence here, but to say Gigi archived what he did so far bcoz of the backline in front of him is juz... ignorant.

of coz Casillas is a great GK too, no doubt abt it.

To me, it's gotta be between casillas and cech. I'm tilting towards cech due to his crazy aerial ability when dealing with crosses and corners. Then again casillas is nuts when it comes to 1v1... Tough choice but going with cech mayb cause get to watch him more... Lol...

Buffon named all-time Number One
Tuesday 15 January, 2008

According to the IFFHS institute of football statistics, Gianluigi Buffon is the greatest goalkeeper of the last 20 years.

The International Federation of Football History and Statistics made the announcement today after collating its latest figures that crown the Juventus goalkeeper best of 2007.

Buffon tops the all-time charts - although the IFFHS only began its calculations from its inception in 1987 - on 69 points along with former Manchester United and Denmark shot-stopper Peter Schmeichel.

Germany's Oliver Kahn is in third place on 62 points, followed by Jose Luis Chilavert of Paraguay (58) and ex-Inter and Italy goallie Walter Zenga (55).

Edwin Van Der Sar, Belgium's Michel Preud-homme, Brazilian ex-Parma goalkeeper Claudio Taffarel and David Seaman complete the top 10.

Other Serie A based entries include Milan's Nelson Dida in 13th position on 35 points, Inter benchwarmer Francesco Toldo in 20th alongside German Andreas Kopke, Gianluca Pagliuca in 22nd and Angelo Peruzzi in 32nd place on equal points with Jens Lehmann.

The IFFHS plans a gala in 2012 to mark '25 Years of World Goalkeepers.'

buffon.

The post you entered in was too short. You must have at least 10 character(s) in your post before it will get posted.

There you go. Another example of how statistics can give you an inaccurate depiction of reality. Claudio Taffarel? Yes he did have one good World Cup but to rank him ahead of Pagliuca or Peruzzi? Nice to see Preud-homme up there but I'm curious as to where the likes of Zubizaretta, Ravelli and Shilton rank.

Maybe can throw in Robbo in the mix if you guys are talking about keeper that can score. After all he scored well over 60 yards last season against Watford in the league.

well they claimed that the votes were cast by IFFHS's editorial staff as well as experts from 89 countries from the 6 continents.
they even put Sevilla FC as no. 1 club in 2007, followed by Man Utd & Chelsea, i mean.. its highly debatable

I have to wonder aloud; would those that voted Van Der Sar have voted for him if he was still at Fulham? Ironically; his best years in England have been at Fulham. At MU; he's just been.....average. Sad really.

Not really; he's just got a good defense. Check out his fulham playing videos if you have access. That was when he really shone; Playing in front of a crap defense. Compared to that; he's just been average. In fact Fulham did a good piece of business; I would dare say, because in his last year at Fulham; he was costing them points with uncharacteristic mistakes.

To call him the best currently does a great dis-service to his outstanding form throughtout his career and to the other great goalies currently around.

Kudos to Pepe Reina for winning the Golden Gloves award for the third time in three seasons. Most clean sheets three seasons running.

Are you sure. After he did manage to score against Cech at Stamford Bridge. tongue.gif

Moreover in his first game at Anfield he famously left some Israelian defender dead for pace before coolly slotted the ball into the net against the Czech number one.

By that reckoning, Pepe has kept the most clean sheets meaning he's kept most forwards quiet.

I'm inclined to agree. For many, it's just to show support for their team and we know for a fact there are most Man Utd fans here than any other, one-liner posters or not. It's not about being objective. The thing I don't like about polls is that you don't get to articulate why you picked your choice. To be fair though, the poll does say, "your favourite" and not "the best" goalkeeper.

Not really true though. If this polls were done during the time when we had 'The Fat Aussie' & 'The Italian who played only 4 games' I'm sure they won't be getting any votes at all tongue.gif

Edited. Hated him for being arrested on the day we signed him and I'm conviced we signed him because of the cheapskate Martin Edwards don't wanna spend on VDS or Buffon.

Wall Taibi played a stormer in his first game against us! I'm sure that lone is worth a few votes smile.gif . Bosnich was actually one of my favourite keepers while he was as Villa. Then he became a druggie.

Taibi record. Played 4 Conceded 11. Nuff Said. One of the goals conceded is the embarrasment by Le Tissier. The whole stadium went quiet.

BTW, we won the game against Liverpool only because of the 2 own goals by you know who, not because of Taibi.

Definitely would have to be Buffon in my books. The main thing about good goal keeper is about consistency and be ready when call upon. Buffon definitely fit all of those criteria and plus he has prove over a period of time since his day with Parma right to the International stage.

He came with much promise. There was a bit of him in the press if you remember but he had to wait for a fair while before getting his chance. I must say that as not many Asian's play their trade in the Premiership, i was rather hoping to see him in action but it isn't easy displacing a keeper as good as Jaaskelainen. Al Habsi was a little shaky in his first game but has since been immense. A big tall strong goalkeeper by stature with apparently, rather good reflexes to boot. If he maintains his form, I see him displacing his Finnish counterpart next season.

Added on May 22, 2008, 3:52 pmHas anyone heard of this young lad? Good reflexes and agility.

Guillermo Ochoa
