That's SRP, of course it is much higher. The M50 can be had for RM550+ the last time I checked.
Though I don't think getting the M50 is a good idea if closed headphones are what you are looking for. The Creative Aurvana Live! is which goes for about RM400 (maybe even less, check garage sale) is a much better deal with similar extension on the bass, still holding mids in detail and doesn't have the rather harsh and bright highs that the M50 has.

Although the M50 has better imaging, but can be a little bit too analytical at times. Taking the fun out of actually enjoying games. It's not as if the CAL! isn't good in positional accuracy either, but just not at the level of the M50 for a closed headphone.

I always found the M50 to be very uncomfortable too, the clamping pressure on them is just... really bad. This is coming from someone who has quite a small head and if I can't take the clamping pressure, I don't think anyone with a medium size or bigger head will be happy.
There are some mods where you can pre-stretch the bands for 48 hours or more, but even then... the comfort is really only passable. The CAL! doesn't have much of a comfort issue and its pleather pads are one of the best I've ever put over my ears.

So if closed headphones under RM500 - Creative Aurvana Live!
As a bonus, the CAL! doesn't need much amping to get to its potential either. The DSS you got is good enough, plays well with Dolby Headphones too!
Though understand the mids on the CAL! isn't as intimate as your Koss Portapro, but you'll get more bass if that's what you're looking for.

CNET is bad for reviews on audiophile headphones. Check Head-fi or innerfidelity.
I've tested the CAL! personally and in Malaysia at least, it is possibly one of the best closed headphones under RM400.

SRP = suggested retail price.
More commonly known as MSRP, manufacturer's suggested retail price.

well, Cnet review isn't always that bad, but i would prefer utube for review.
im not really audiophile guy, i just like my music to be clear ,comfortable and portable(hopefully come with a bag).
spec don't mind me, but price do.

CAL is it then , i manage to find 1 for RM300 in lyn. i will try and send my proposal to finance ministry and hope it will approve for Christmas list. thumbup.gif

your opinion is well appreciated ben. Keep up the good work, are u working as a freelance audio consultant?
It 4am and u are still awake. WOW.

the things that keep me from sleeping now is researching for headset n comparing. (some review do make me sleep)

found 1 headset for SONY MDR-1r , design is pretty awesome, price is around Rm1k. Did you have a chance to try it out?

The CAL! isn't that portable though, comes with a long cable too. It isn't heavy but it doesn't fold.
Comfort wise, if you're already fine with the Sony PS Headphone (the Pulse I assume?) then they feel somewhat similar except the pads on the CAL! are way better. Alot more plush. If you'd prefer, you can change the pads to some velor types like the ones from Beyerdynamic and it'll be good too.

laugh.gif Finance ministry... wow.

No I'm not an audio consultant, just an audiophile who loves headphones these days.
4am yeah... well playing GTA V, so~ tongue.gif

Creative didn't even make the Aurvana Live!, just marketed it.
The drivers were made by Fostex. Many regards the CAL! as a baby Denon D2000 because of how similar they sound, without costing as much.

True story there. Even my D5000 drivers are by Fostex. Fostex is so amazing. But the price for a fostex headphone. OMG!

For speakers, best bet is to go for 2.1 and for up to RM700, the Swans HiVi M50w is a good choice.

Yeah I noticed you have a D5000, one of the most immersive bass I've heard on a headphone, ever. So deep, so lumptious yet it doesn't cloud the mids.
True that about Fostex, personally eyeing the TH-900 here... but the price is sweat.gif

Hei Ben

Just manage to DSS earforce, it seem that the sound of the surrounding is much more clear, i try it on Dragon Dogma, and GTA:V.

for Dragon Dogma, some of the voice were much surround u not like 2D sound. I feel like the sound got layers, like Voice upfront then surrounding sound like running water is way back. Once the voice stop the surrounding sound would merge back softly.

i was using DSS earforce with one of the Sony MDS series headset , can't remember what series. But the connecter is abit broken, i have to adjust it by twisting the connector to be able to listen to both left n right side.

Then i try the DSS earforce on Sony PS3 headset with the USB plug in to USB OUT, with the dobly bybass i don't seem to hear any different.

It's okay, at least the speakers aren't that of the usual crap you'd see from Logitech, Sonic Gear, Altec Lansing and to most extent, Edifier too.

You can only get Dolby Headphone in analog mode from the DSS, meaning only from the audio out.

Simply plugging in a headset from USB-in on the DSS and then out from the DSS to the PS3 would obviously give you nothing because DH can only be applied on the optical input source. Also with Dolby bypass, you obviously don't hear any difference because it is bypassing any sort of processing the DSS does on your audio. It's just bypassing your standard stereo 2.0.

The 1st gen PS3 headset doesn't have an analog out like the Pulse Elite does, so there's no way to get Dolby Headphones on it. You're stuck with Sony's subpar virtual surround, which has poor rear positional cues.

Dolby Headphone works with anything as long as it is a 5.1/7.1 source.

KZ3 for shooters should be fine, I think. Though I don't play FPS much on consoles, so I can't comment on this further.
Ni No Kuni just for the ochestra-like panning on the soundtrack is a bliss to listen to as well, especially if you've got a very well balanced headphone. Journey is also a good test for imaging, as it has a variety of sound effects from gusts, to wind, to you-know-the-drill.

My go to test for DH on console games are Dead Space 1/2, The Last of Us, and MGS4.
Dead Space because all of its sound effects are pre-baked, that means they always placed in the same position. So it is a static benchmark where if a headphone can hear the cues, it means that is a good indication that it does well with DH.

TLoU because in quiet spaces (and if you played it, you know there are plenty of quiet places), you'll be able to hear the nuances of everything else around you.

MGS4 is almost like TLoU except the opposite in which the 1st Act has so much background noises that means it'll be quite a test for plenty of headphones, especially ones with large soundstage and good imaging.

Yesterday we to mall and manage to see and test out the Sony MDR-1R and i m really impress. The sound are really clear, the bass not too heavy which i really like. The main point it is really comfortable!!

But the retail price are RM999, damn, in LYN is around RM850.

@Ben n Neoardi
i don't have resistance man, i have dead space 2, but haven't got a chance to put in yet.

i tried it on GTA not much different on DSS, i really like the dragon crown sound on DSS.
Currently my setup is the MDR-XD400(it around 4 years old) with DSS earforce.

GTA5 doesn't seem to play well with DH properly. At first I was unimpressed as well, but after adjusting the in-game virtual speaker placements then it became better.
IIRC, I set them both to medium on both the front and rear where the default was set to wide. If you're not getting enough rear audio cues, you can try setting the rear speaker placement to narrow (which I don't like, personally).

Yeah been hearing pretty nice things about the MDR-1 lately. Hopefully can get to try them out soon.

ya GTA5 for me is just the normal thingy i don't expect much surround for it. Where do u config the in game virtual speaker on ps3?

i really like the MDR-1 design , red n black is very sharp. It seem it been out for almost a year, checked on the head fi forum, much comment are ok.
