depend on the spec
some of them using fully cooper sink, such those optiplex 170L some using tower sink(alloy + cooper) like my poweredge 800 server but dunno what the brand of sink.. |

I'm very impressed with their cooling BTX tower! Love the cool temperature! Envy la...we spent so much money on good heatsink and yet, dell can do it with only a proc fan and exhaust

wait till you see how dell packed a C2D E6600 into a compact sub-SFF Optiplex 745 case that even carries its own power supply unit.
it runs unbielevilably quiet and stays cool most of the time in normal ambient temperature lemme take a snap when i'm in office tomorrow edit: the SFF has hdd, DVD, and even an FDD to boot. generous 8 usb ports and even legacy parallel and serial ports. it has 4 ram banks (heck, it's a full sized mobo) and is able to run dual channel. most large manufacturer pc's like dell's, hp and lenovo all run at least 2 low rpm fans, one as the exhaust fan and another fan on the intake, the instake fan doubles up to cool the cpu and also the power regulators on the mobo. normally no fan on the northbridge...
but i reckon it runs cooler as their internal design draws air from outside the chassis to cool down the proc, instead of our DIY pc's which normally still draws already warm air inside the chassis..my 2 cents... |

dell's are quiet cos like most manufacturers (unlike enthuasiast)..... its design to operate within a certain thermal envelope... for enthuasiast... we want them as cool as possible. That's the difference.. that's why it's quiet

![]() ![]() the SFF with a 3.5" hdd, and everything else is laptop component. the ruler is there for comparison it's a BTX design. 1 fan for the cpu hsf and another one for the puny 300w true power psu notice the C2D tag there. This post has been edited by lucifah: Apr 3 2007, 12:37 PM |

betcha they cant do it on a pentium d 820 system
I still remmember that dell is one of the first to introduce direct exhaust piping in their desktop series back then most co. still fumbling with internal HSF which draws hot air from within the casing. but too bad back then the components ran cooler so it became a luxury item... |

QUOTE(RoxyMunky @ Apr 3 2007, 11:26 AM) there's this big fan with Low rpm to suck air from front towards CPU which is attached with a really big heatsink, and exhaust to the back of the casing. Dell has been using BTX ever since they had a fair number of RMA issues after they first started selling systems using Prescott (and its relatives). BTX is brilliant in cooling, but too strict in design-even motherboard components must follow exactly as Intel specified it. This doesn't work out with enthusiast systems and especially AMD systems as the component layout is different-particularly that for AMD systems the ram is very close to the processor because the memory controller is on the CPU. And if I'm not mistaken to use BTX Intel collects licencing fees. Overall its a flop, even Intel isn't backing up the design much anymore.

Yeah, if only Intel were serious in promoting and telling other manufacturers to use BTX.That way, BTX will be made famous. But then, just like what you said that intel isn't backing up the design much anymore, there's nothing we can do. |

I have saw the Dell computer, those run on P4 procs. They are actaully using a fan to suck out the heat from the processor's heatsink there.I didn't see any other more fans inside the casing there. The casing is the mid tower casing. But the fan is not really noisy as i think they are running at low speed only.

i got a Inspiron Desktop, using an e4400, the only has 2 fans, 1 for exhaust (nidec) and 1 on the cpu, the cpu's fan is a leaf blower at 100%, and its made by nidec too @_@
i think in a region of at least 45dBa |

I wonder what's up with Dell these days.. Or are the new processors that hot till they need to run the system fan that loudy?
My old Dimension had only 1 Nidec fan and it was virtually silent. |
