I won't lie to you - being a foreigner, it won't be easy for you to get a 'proper' job upon graduation. There's this fear you won't fit into the company culture or you can't speak English. Also, many jobs aren't advertised - people are recruited internally or thru word of mouth. That's why I advised you to do part time work to help build the CV. Employers will be less nervous once they find you have worked and can fit into the NZ work culture, whatever that is.

I did my degree in Otago. Fun place with lots of crazy Kiwis. Took me quite a while to find a job too. Law is a tough field though, with an even stronger old boy network.
*
lol, even for part time job i found it quite hard.

coz i applied through SJS for more than 5 times already. never got one.
especially as an international student.

but since one of my friends already working somewhere, he told us there was vacancy, and i applied for that.
even as a stock loader at supermarket through mouth to mouth sweat.gif

Yea it's one of the coldest winters in recent times
Just got back from that area myself, Msian Games in Palmerston North
Now back in Auckland already.

I mostly tutor at my uni(UoA). Work is hard to find with the recession nowadays.
If you're a 2nd year with good grades or a 3rd year, try getting those Summer Scholarships
Mucho cash
*

Don't want to rain on your parade, but be careful with the electric blanket. It's a real fire hazard. It's advisable not to sleep with it on. Cos when you sleep, you move and when you move, the electric blanket moves. That might cause the wires to break and ... FIRE!
*
ehmm i used the blanket for more than 3 months already.
thank god nothing happen.
if u tied the blanket really careful. the balnket wont move la.

plus i sleep like a sandwich now.

true i'm not 80 rolleyes.gif but it's my first flight over and my family doesn't encourage me to take the transit.
not practical for first timers.
i'll take transits only when i've settled down over there.
gotten a pretty okay deal after signing up for the ISIC card btw. biggrin.gif
*
my first flight back was from CH - Bangkok, then stop over Bangkok for 12hours b4 boarding on Air asia,
the same also for flight back.. tongue.gif

but if you dont feel like doing it, dont do it then, but have to spend a bit extra money.
ehmm isic ey, i never use them.. sounds useless (for me) sometimes the deal...

QUOTE(haya @ Nov 14 2009, 10:54 AM)
Mots transits go through Melbourne if you're going to Wellington/CHC.

Another alternative is to go through Singapore. Emirates can offer some good deals at times if you're lucky.

And what's wrong with a transit, as long as it is a one-shot through flight? Might surprise you "westerners", but those from East Malaysia usually transit through Singapore/KL, and not so occasionally Brunei (yes, Royal Brunei flies to AKL also).
*
last time i bought CHC - Bangkok for $800ish. return.
but that was April la.. went back for 3 weeks only tongue.gif

QUOTE(chika138 @ Nov 14 2009, 02:38 PM)
thanks haya
i'm fine with transit after my first time flight this coming jan
still deciding which city to go, wellington or christchurch
if i did not take what the assoc dean said that day wrongly i'm going to CC unless i request for welly
*
by CC u meant Christchurch ey??

heheh Christchurch can be quite tricky to type on keyboard sometime. so i write CH instead.. plus, local forum sometimes use CH. tongue.gif

the Mount Albert one. i hope it's a nice place~

Added on November 30, 2009, 1:36 pmafter reading through the thread, apparently Vodafone has somewhat become the exclusive choice for international students?

i just looked through the prices of their phones... typical monthly cost is NZD39.95 and you can get a lauyah phone for free. i doubt i'm gonna use that much monthly.

so is it really worth to get their phone plus the plan, or just get in Malaysia and use a prepaid card? i hope their prepaid system is identical to here lol.
*
i just used my SE w810i here... bought from forum here.

mostly people use vodafone, and then just subscribe to text2000. 2000 txts for NZD10/month.

but nowadays got 2 degree provider, sounds cheap but lazy to change my provider. lol

if you used the vodafone phone, the phone is locked i reckon.

huix, you said you live near Mount Albert? any cheap accommodation nearby? i think i'll lie low in Unitec for a semester or two then move out... provided the place is walking distance to campus.

Added on December 9, 2009, 7:44 pmdear wornbook and other female sistas, i'll be doing some shopping over the weekend. i've scoured the thread, some of you mentioned clothing not cheap at all there?

to me, angmoh countries are cheap because S - M are odd sizes. eg, Asians shopping in US / UK, they get all the odd stuff so it comes cheap. what about NZ? no such thing?

and i'm considering footwear as well... should i buy a pair of warm boots here or there... and summer can wear sandals hor?
*
i'm male..
from my experience..
S-M size is the fastest size to disappear on the shelves as there's gonna be a lot of other asians looking for it too, especially during sales. furthermore, not all ang moh big in size.
Because whenever sale, as i'm not the quickest to be at the mall during sale time, only XXXXXL size left for me.. lol

and i dont buy during non-sale time as sometime, the price can ridiculously reduced during sale. but i'm male la... dont care what to wear.
but my gf mentioned she was lucky last time, as she aimed this one pair of heels, the original price was like 90 ish, after sometimes, sale,, became 20ish. lol

bout the expensiveness,, i reckon you get a part time job so at least you can have extra money for shopping tongue.gif

no need to buy the warm boots there, buy in nz.. easier tongue.gif

lol! i'm in the midst of grabbing stuff from Malaysia right now, i really don't like bumping into someone with the same apparel as myself. it's a girl thing. doh.gif

i've checked out Kathmandu, it looks so blah. and bloody overpriced...

no Crocs, no offense. tongue.gif unless they come out with something more fashionable. tongue.gif
*
lol, try columbia.. or macpac.

was quite lucky i went to the shop during their sale, and that time i got money. had 50% off for a winter jacket.. tongue.gif
