Hi everyone,

My mum is diagnosed with Stage IIIB Non-Small Cell Adeno Carcinoma (Lung Cancer). She is 63, non-smoker and healthy with zero symptom. Was told that surgery is no longer an option since we're at the advance stage. We're now waiting for the EGFR test back to see if it's mutation positive and assess our options.

I heard a lot of people commented about "chemo kills", government hospital are better, consider alternative treatment, TCM maybe, or even spiritual healing.

My questions are:

1. Anyone heard or gone through chemo that successfully cured/treated in their 60s?
2. Anyone has any recommendation of oncologists/specialist to for 2nd/3rd/4th opinion & options for lung cancer treatment?
3. Anyone know any Chinese doctor/TCM that is specialist in lung or cancer patients?
4. Have you heard of any other alternative treatments/real stories that helps with stage 3B lung cancer patients?
5. Anyone done HITV/Immunotherapy, how was the process, was it successful?
6. I've also ordered herbal medicine like - Bloodroot, turmeric and Artemisinin. Anyone had experience and successfully overcome it?

Appreciate any kind of recommendation or comments will help a lost soul here.

Your response is highly appreciated.

yes lung cancer will usually have a poor prognosis
the 5 years survival rate is usually quite low
more towards chemo/radio and palliative care
she can always be referred to oncology and palliative medicine

Sorry to hear that.

My late grandmother had lung cancer too, but she was 78 when diagnosed. So, even doctor is against chemo due to her age and advange stage of the cancer (stage 3 too), and it was 2nd time her got it (first time was jaw cancer, yes, she is smoker).

We did as much as we could in palliative care, requesting help from NGO, Hospis Malaysia, where they come for weekly visit assisting us (usually just nurse, only first time doctor will come, else, doctor will come as when required basis), understanding the symptoms, preparing us, physically and mentally, ensuring as little pain as possible.

But, I guess, your case may differs, as your mum is younger, she might have better chance, withstand the chemo. If you want second opinion on oncology, you may want to try SJMC. Alternative, University Hospital at UM there also have good doctor, as majority of them are teaching professor, but, it really depends on luck to meet them, their busy schedule. In term of TCM, you may try Tong Shin hospital, but, I doubt they any help, other than more towards palliative care.

My advice to you, TS, I can understand how you feel, the feeling of hard to believe, want to find 2nd opinion, or any opinion that is positive, but, speaking of experience, you got to accept the reality. Don't continue shop for opinion, max many 2 will be sufficient, then, discuss with family members, discuss with patients on the next course of action. Be objective, weight in all pro and cons of every treatment, and then decide quick. Don't prolong, time is important, as cancer spread really fast if no action taken. My late grandmother, with palliative care, where doctor only estimate between 1 month (worst case scenario) to 6 months (best case scenario) from first diagnostic, able to live for additional and good 6 months, only her final 1 month was suffered.

Adencarcinoma of the lung, the most common nonsmall cell lung
cancer (NCSLC) type, tends to affect women and nonsmokers.

You can read the current situation with targeted drugs in NSCLC.

The drugs work, but resistance usually develops after some time.

You can bolster your mum's chances with the following. One

To answer your questions
1. You can't cure cancer, particularly advanced cancer. But treatment can cause the cancer to go into remission. Your mothers condition has a low success rate but it's not unheard of.
2. See Prof Ho or Prof Liang in UMMC. Don't seek too many opinions, you will confuse yourself. Find someone your mother feels comfortable with. Remember, they are doctors, not miracle workers.
3. No. Don't waste time or money here.
4. Same as 3. There will be some who approach you to buy some miracle juice, water, etc. Don't waste time and money. And also, unfriend these ppl.
5. It may work. But your doctor has to conduct some tests to determine if your mother is suitable for the treatment.
6. No harm trying, but please let the doctor know so that it doesn't interact with her medication.
I wish you all the best and stay strong.

Hi,

My personal suggestion on your 6th question (Herbal medicine). I would recommend cactus juice which has high phytochemical properties and anti-cancer properties. I am willing to share more information with you through private message.

Hi, thanks for that. I heard about it too, please do PM me. I've been putting her through chinese herbs and see how will see get better from here on.

We're waiting for the EGFR test to come back and doing a PET scan next week to see if its spreading else where.

Hey OP, sorry to hear that. I am posting here because my mom has recently admitted to hospital due to fluid on her lungs. The bad thing is that the fluid came back after having it drained and it is tested to be high in tumor marker. So the doctors were trying to find the 'primary' problem and eventually they speculated that it was coming from my mom's ovaries, uterus and etc.

Thus, my mom was operated a couple days ago to have those parts removed and sent to analysis. Good news is that the specimens turned out to be cancer-free however, a thorough report has yet to come out. Bad news is that the 'primary' is still not found after ruling out the reproductive & digestive organs as well as the thyroid and etc.

Long story short, we are now consulted by the oncologist to consider chemotherapy based on his assumption that the 'primary' might be in the lungs itself. He basically said the cancer is likely to be in advance stage and urged us to make decision asap. He did say that my mom's case is unusual. However, isn't that kinda jumping to conclusions? CT scans did not show anything on my mom's lungs. It's just the high tumor marker and the recurrent fluid.

The doctor has ordered a liquid biopsy test and the result will come out in two weeks' time. At the meantime, we are a bit dumbfounded. Do you guys have any advice or experience that can shed some light on this situation. Any response is greatly appreciated! Lastly, I apologize for this sorta irrelevant post.
