Hi Si Fu,

I am currently looking for a drift car which cost less than 50k but have no idea how to start.

I have no knowledge in modifying cars to be drift-able.

Currently driving a 2nd-Gen Isawara~

Please advise! unsure.gif

anything with rear wheel drive, limited slip diff, extended control arm, coilover suspension and maybe... hydraulic handbrake.

anything with 150hp above can drift easily with the above setup. Actually.. 110hp also can, drifted with a bone stock 4-age engine before. better to learn with underpower engine 1st.

rwd car below 50k is alot, example is, e30, e36, e46, ke70, kp61, nissan cefiro a31, old volvo... there are many.

once u get the car setup and dialed in, then spend the remaining of your budget on tires. laugh.gif

You may get a hatchback FWD car for example the civic eg6 or the myvi. Those cars tend to perform better with Scandinavian Flick.

Watch this ancient video. They explained best to drift with a front wheel drive.

If you don't feel like playing with the lost control way like FWD did, the rear wheel drive is your choice. The handsome Toyota altezza recommended by 6uest would be a nice one although those smaller and lighter old rear wheel drive is easier to drift with throttle modifications. The dude in car throttle are making his own record with the altezza btw. Kinda entertaining though.

Readily available is KE70 with 4AGE. Roughly starts from RM7500-RM20K. Depending on condition. Ideal car is Nissan Cefiro A31 with RM20DET or 180SX. But 180SX are expensive.

For learner i do not actually encourage small platform cars like KE70 or AE86. That car actually has steep learning curve. The Cefiro longer wheelbase is actually more forgiving. Longer wheelbase start drifting slower and allows you to catch the drift more easily. Shorter wheelbase will swing too fast and you will have react quicker to catch the drift.

If cost is a concern, Ke70 is the way to go as it is much more cheaper to maintain and fix overall. Most drift cars are "bangers". If you want the ride to look nice and drift, the sport isn't exactly for you. Cable ties, hammers, cut off steel brackets, cheap tires will be your best friend when you start drifting. If you do start with KE70, start with really cheap used tires and get a feel of the car then move up the scale to better tires. By then you have the choice to move up to cars with bigger power. Some people start with grippy tires and when they fail to understand why they have a hard time holding the drift, they give up drifting.

Agree with the above, good also to start with cheap cars like the KE70 to minimize the damage cost. smile.gif Of course to drift, don't put good sticky high performance tires at the rear coz it will be difficult to let it loose. I suggest to practice in a big empty space/parking lot until you can really get a good feel and control of the drift.

When comes to rear wheel drive, I don't really agree with replacing the rear tyre with less grip tyre for rear wheel drive. You will need the grip from rear wheel tyre when weight distribution comes in with proper throttle control.

Less grip and harder rear tire for front wheel drive to introduce overturn makes much more sense though.

You can run on crappy tire. You just don't get speed, grip and dramatic smoke.. If car overspun. It means that the driver has poor throttle control and skills. Nothing to do with tire. The reason why it's call drifting its to purposely induce oversteer. So why do you need grip? If the car is under power it's harder to slide with grippy tire.

It is better to practice with burner tire if you're an ameture drifter. It is much easier to drive on on the limits at slower speed compared to if you use grippy tire, you will be at a very fast pace. dangerous for those that are just starting out.
