Getting Started

|
As you all know , our pc might collect dust inside the cpu especially on the fans and heatsinks. Sometimes when you dont bother this at all, the dust will build up into a pile and it may affect your computer's cooling efficiency. Not only that but also make your computer run more NOISY . All just because of the dust... Worse case , your pc might burn out or get faulty over time as the ignorance on it. So lets find out how often we clean our computer and discuss about it..

Every 2 weeks, the part that I first check is graphics card, next is the CPU and next is the PSU. Normally is the graphics card that collect most dust in my PC

I want to clean since just start learning abt computer maintenance the problem is how could probably clean it because my father just bought it last year January which is branded computer, there gt seal up the back of the cpu with sticker to avoid customer cheat them during warranty. They said if the warranty sticker gone the warranty might expire immediate...the warranty duration is 3 yrs.

More like cleaning when i see dust bulid up. Usually use cotton buds to clean the fan blades. For the heat sink wash it with water, dry it, then put some thermal paste , and rock n roll again.

Man ! Is once a week of cleaning is really required ? Maybe you guys do it when you just bought the pc, after a few months we dont give a damn cleaning once a week. Plus a pc is not 6 cylinder, 24 valve, multi injection V6 engine that deposite carbon buildup. Damn thats too much

I just did last weeekend. Usually if I see my idle temps shoot up, I know it's time to clean. But most of the time I do it teh lazy way: 1. Open side panel 2. Cotton bud + nail polish remover 3. Swipe swipe, clean clean clean clean, GPU + mobo + HSF 4. Replace side panel. ~10-15 minutes. No parts removed! When i realllllllllly have the time, i will take the parts out. eheh.

Don't know how to dismantle motherboard/ heatsink. I just use some cotton (a little damp) to wipe off dust. Usually clean it when Intel Active Monitor alerts me for overheating.

I don't really dare to use a little damp cotton to clean it... scared later push the start button, screen black black didn't change... I just use some soft tissue to wipe the mobo and the others... and pull out those sticky dust on the fans and use a dry tissue to wipe it again.

QUOTE(Kit II @ Mar 28 2007, 10:32 PM) As you all know , our pc might collect dust inside the cpu especially on the fans and heatsinks. Sometimes when you dont bother this at all, the dust will build up into a pile and it may affect your computer's cooling efficiency. Not only that but also make your computer run more NOISY . All just because of the dust... Worse case , your pc might burn out or get faulty over time as the ignorance on it. So lets find out how often we clean our computer and discuss about it.. i have never clean my own comp at all 4 more than 4 years except when upgrading 2 newer GC so far i did it 4x in the last 4 years bcoz i been upgrading GC so many times MX series---5 series---6 series---7 series---8 series whether i m going 2 upgrade again 2 future 9 series remains 2 b seen This post has been edited by skylinegtr34rule4life: May 14 2007, 11:10 PM

(hmm...or maybe just leave it like tat, use the time to set up your new rig would be more efficient.) For my rig, hmm...depends a lot on mood. But wouldn't be less than twice a year. The XP-90 gets frequent cleaning as my Nidec traps loadsa dust. The other parts, still ok. Was thinking of bringing my rig to the car wash and borrow their blower.

True, I've heard that you can't simply use any brush. Some brush may cause a build-up of electrostatic and the ESD may damage your ESD-sensitive components.

QUOTE(Hybrified @ May 19 2007, 07:15 AM) i took my my cpu ... the thermal paste like kinda dry oledi is it time to change ?? and where else should i apply thermal other than cpu ?? If you have removed your CPU, then you must reapply new thermal paste. Wipe off the old thermal paste first though (if you have thermal paste remover, use it! e.g. ARCTICLEANER) In some mobo, the chipsets (northbridge/southbridge) heat-sink/heak-sink fan may not have adequate thermal paste or the thermal paste are lousy. If you know how, you can remove the heat-sink/heat-sink fan and reapply a good thermal paste...... This is of course, off-topic: Wanna learn more about thermal paste, go here: http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/455782This post has been edited by kmarc: May 19 2007, 07:22 AM

TIM of course will dry after some time la. Thermal paste are used for CPU, GPU, and mebbie NB. Not sure abt NB. Anyways, talking about TIM reminds me of smth. I sent my old PC to PCZone cuz of instability. The technician cleaned my stock HSF by removing the fan (left the chunk of aluminium) and started whacking it on the floor. Strange, but effective. Lotsa dust came out. After that, he just chucked the whole HSF back. I asked him abt the TIM, he said nvm, liddat also can work.
