The .DAT from VCD are actual .MPG files.
If you want to reconvert, then you have to select what kind of codec for the audio and what kind of codec you want the output .AVI file depending on your converter software.
The most common is people use DIVX or XVID for video stream and MP3 for audio stream and merge them into the .AVI file.

For compatibility (especially if you're planning to play using home DivX player) use DivX (current version is 6.5) and LAME ACM MP3 Codec (convert audio into MP3).

Can any1 tell me which software is good and what settings I use. I greatly appreciate your help. Uh.. I experienced the same and want to turn the dat video files to avi playable on my dvd player just a few days ago. I am also new and I asked my friend for help. He recommended ojosoft dat to avi converter. I am too clumsy to use it, so I emailed their after - sale service. Actually it is simple, just choosing the right profile is ok. You can do following their guides. And remember choose the profile for avi: DVD Player - NTSC compatible [DivX,4000kbps,29.97fps,720*480]. Good luck
