hi carsonoel....i also have a 8month+ old female glider and am actually looking for someone to swap with...this is to prevent my glider from any in-breeding...currently i have 12 sugar gliders all together(6 males,4 females,2 still in pouch)...normally i do swapping with my other fren who also has about 10 gliders but i'm planning to expand the gene pool...so is it ok if i can swap with u?...if not, how much are u willing to let go...pls do pm me...thanks..=)

12 gliders? Thats alot!
How you manage to bond with all of them?  smile.gif
*
initially i have 3 gliders(a pair and thier son)...all are very tame and can be handheld except the dominant father...very ferocious...it bites...tried to bond with him but in the end i gave up....so as it goes along the pair had given birth 5 times so far:-

1st - one male
2nd - one male, one female
3rd - 2 males
4th - 2 females
5th - 2 joeys but still in pouch(about 2 weeks old)

talking about bonding...it's easy when their still young...i handheld them when they just OOP for few minutes for them to get used to my scent....do tat everyday(preferably in the night when the mom leaves them behind to feed)....this is so to prevent from interrupting when the joeys are weaning....

Talking about breeding as in your experience is ok.... but pairing is a no no. Swapping is ok but no discussions of swapping for breeding. Do so in PM.

alright...got it...thanks for the info... =)

1. if i get a baby, which is a better choice to get, a male o female ? better for me to get only 1 ? or a pair is better ?
2. is it advisable for me to bring along inside a car, when i'm on the move ? will it run around ? or should be in a cage ?
3. if i bring it out, will it get stressed if exposed to a lot of people ?

or any good advice you can give for a beginner like me ?

by the way, where can i get or find ??

*
1. as a personal experience, i feel that males and females behave more or less the same as humans...masculine and feminine...whether to get 1 or 2 depends on the time u could spare for them...a lonely glider could die from loneliness due to stress...whereas a pair would be better(companionship)...now,for a pair it's ok to have both the same sex...if not, make sure they r not siblings(in-breeding could result in deformation of joeys)...correct me if i'm wrong...

2. i would advice not unless they are captivated in a cage or pouch.reasons can be many(eg. distract ur driving, emergency brake could toss them around or get tossed by objects )

3. i would suggest u to do so when they are more mature...then they would be more friendly towards other people...this is all down to conditioning...if they are used to crowd then it's ok...otherwise better not...

it is always best to do a thorough research on them...the first page helps alot though....

currently there's only 1 place in mind that i know...SS19 Subang Jaya....

good luck!

QUOTE(tleilaxu @ Aug 15 2007, 09:11 PM)
how do u know they`re 2 weeks old?can see the joeys when they`re in the pouch?
*
o0o that's easy...because i keep track of them in a logbook...i'll note down the date n time when a mating is sighted...then from there i'll estimate the time of birth which is 16 days later...in that period i'll observe the female closely for any signs...then i'll start counting thereon...everything is just approximation....unless u're lucky enough to witness the birth of the joey which normally occurs during the very early hours of the morning 5am onwards before sunrise....in my case, i'm not that lucky...

no i don c any joeys in the pouch but i can c a small lump on the pouch...then i'm gonna tell u sumthing which is not recommended to b done unless u're very experienced...i'd feel the pouch to check...i do tat everynight to check for progress...

No pics ah? Yah, normally their pouches will bulge, I saw 2 gliders with joeys before at different times... I even got to feel one hahaha but this I made sure that the glider is tame, not stress and didn't try to attack me.
*
oh yes i have pics which i have yet to post them up...will do soon when i'm free...

QUOTE(krynzpeaches @ Aug 17 2007, 10:11 AM)

Good that you keep track of the joeys progress and estimation.

But I don't recommend colony breeding and infact against it. There are many risk to consider and can be fatal at times. If possible, please, please breed them in separate pairs.

Yes, you need to be experienced, but it's still not good to feel her pouch everynight. We might not notice it, but it is very stressful for the mother suggie. Just do so once a week if you need to check on the joeys progess.

Peace!

*
a good note there...yes i do keep each pairs in separate cages...in fact i also prevent them from inbreeding that's y i do swapping....

maybe i didnt stress much or elaborate much enough about wat i don't recommend ppl to do...the elaboration can b found in krynzpeaches's reply...
anyway i'd only do that once i can c movements of the joeys in the pouch onwards...do not apply any pressure onto the pouch just feel it...

peace
