QUOTE(carenys55 @ Aug 27 2007, 01:38 AM)
RIP OPY's glider.
I'm sorry for your lost.
=(

Feeding Chloey with fruits now,
i hand feed her and she will come and take the fruits.
She always barks around 5-7am in the morning, ^^''

I'm going back to Penang this thursday for 2 days.
Should i bring her? Will she be stressed out??
*
Bring along lah.... 2 days only heheheh. Just remember to pack enough fruits, a portable cage for her and of course the essential pouch and you heheheh.

QUOTE(iSeeDeadPeople @ Aug 27 2007, 10:53 AM)
do you think its wise to start off with just 1 SG? Coz if i were to buy a pair.. wah.. gonna be broke.. with the cage and all @_@
*
Well, if you have the time, get 1 first. 1 joey is easier to bond with and after 2 months, when your 1st joey is tame and stable, get another. Best is single sex pair. It is always a must to get a pair coz they are social creatures and if we do not have enough time for them, they can become depress. Gliders can live up to 10 years.... 15 years also possible.

QUOTE(iSeeDeadPeople @ Aug 27 2007, 01:43 PM)
Yeah i read a lot about SG's already in the past few days.. and yeah since its an exotic animal.. the price also must be exotic >.< so what i will do now.. is to save for everything first and just buy 1 lum sum.. smile.gif so the best to get joeys is around 8weeks old rite biggrin.gif or 7 weeks shud be ok? Btw, i got a 6 yr old daughter which i think she will play with the joey too.. will the joey be a bit pening coz of the smell part? My body smell and my daughter's smell diff rite..  sweat.gif
*
Exotic price sure lah. Get an 8 week old joey. Since you already have experienced motherhood, taking care of a joey is like taking care of a child too. Sure your daughter would love it but do make sure it won't be just your daughter's pet coz I saw once a mom decided to sell of the gliders coz a son grew tired of them and like some other pet... sometimes kinda sad to see people treat pets as if they were toys.... can throw one side or sell off to ease their problems.

QUOTE(MeLoDy... @ Aug 27 2007, 05:50 PM)
sad.gif ya.... v only know it after buying.... cos v also do reserch after buying.....
cos v believe wat the seller said, v think tat he know n wont lie us.... but...  cry.gif
so now i jus hoping tat v can giv them all the best n take more care for them....

y v only do reserch after buying? cos b4 tis i know tis type of pet from other forum, n my place here nver hav tis type of pet, so when v c it, v bought it quickly,(they r not wit mom when in tat shop...) then after buying v do reserch then only v know tat takecare a joey is not an easy job.... so now v giv them eat milk,(the seller teach, cos he feed them milk also,) which the kitty drink1.
n i learn from other forum, they feed them baby food, so v try too...
i jus wish tat wat v do can giv them enough nutrion n love....
i jus hope tat they can live wit us longer.......
*
Kitten milk? Wow... kitten milk is quite bad coz the lactose in kitten milk is quite high. There is only 1 brand in Malaysia which can be fed to gliders and that is called Pets Own. It is lactose free. Marsupials are very sensitive to lactose, a kangaroo joey can die from drinking cows milk... their body cannot digest or tolerate lactose well so a lactose free milk is needed. Soya milk or corn milk or rice milk are not good substitutes at all. If I were you, I would discontinue the milk. Never trust petshop owners. They will give all sorts of advice which can do more harm than good coz they never do research.

Baby food has not enough nutrition, mostly containing loads of Vit A and C, little to no calcium and some are high in phosphorus, please give a good Leadbeater's BML mix, you can google to find out. Gliders need calcium and a good amount of protein to grow healthily. By leaving out essentials in their diet, they can have a weak immune system or stunt the growth.....

For now, stop the milk and jar babyfood.... read up on BML mix for gliders and start feeding that.

QUOTE(suiteng @ Aug 27 2007, 08:16 PM)
Milk? Which brand? AFAIK, any milk besides the mother's wan is no good for the glider. There's some specially formulated milk but not easily available here.
*
True loh.... the recommended milk is Wambaroo marsupial or glider milk. We do not have it here. Next best thing is Puppy Esbilac but Malaysia don't have while Singapore got.... but a small tin of 8oz I think cost $30!!! Convert here plus shipping.... maybe RM70 to Rm80 already..... so far now only Pets Own suitable.

QUOTE(hackerzx @ Aug 27 2007, 08:27 PM)
bwk blk saje la caren..i oso bring back rihanna kL - Perak huhu..eat KFC together..i saje la..die i kasi jambu madu haha..now at home..with new cage lols..hmstr cge not so big hahha..finally found the juice apple that hun said..MARIGOLD - juice apple No Sugar No Prerservative
*
Wah, bawa here everywhere hahahah... big adventure.

Any juice that is not citric, has no added sugar and preservatives can be given to gliders as treats.

QUOTE(sense_less143 @ Aug 27 2007, 09:35 PM)
Melody, as long as you will take care of the sg properly from now on is fine, cannot do anything to change the fact. I hope the baby sg will live a long happy live with you. They're a delight to keep. I look forward to many more discussions bout your bf's baby sg in this forum smile.gif

I notice Wasabi like to kacau me around 4-6 am. He would play with my hands, nibble nibble until i jaga n layan him properly. So funny haha. Last night I put him at one end of the room, i go to the other, n watch him lari to me. Then i go to the other end, he ikut me also. Aiya so manja la ^^ *love*

One time also when I was so tired, n at night didnt play with him, totally tido mati, i woke up n found out he went to sleep inside my shirt, inside my bra summore. Patutla sebelah lembut semacam lol >.<

He's my baby, n I'll love him always smile.gif
*
Looks like Wasabi fully bonded with you. Does he jump to you when he is at somewhere far or high up? Hahah... now you know what a glider in a bra feels like heheheh.

QUOTE(nurazilah @ Aug 28 2007, 11:58 AM)
iwanted 2 buy SG. my friend offer wif rm250. 2 or 3 months old. is it too expensie?
*
QUOTE(nurazilah @ Aug 28 2007, 02:26 PM)
elo guys.. i really want 2 noe what is the normal price for 1 Sugar glider. pleasee.. i think rm250 is too expensive..
*

Expensive? Seriously not.... It is considered a good price for joeys. Normally a joey goes for Rm300 and above while adults go from Rm250 to Rm60.... If you think it is too expensive, then please do not buy. The cage, accessories, supplies and upkeep is not cheap. A glider is an animal that can live 10 years. If you cannot provide the proper care and attention a glider needs for 10 years, then might as well stick to shorter lifespan animals like hamsters.

Gliders are not easy, it is like taking care of a little kid. They need lots of attention and socialization.

QUOTE(hackerzx @ Aug 28 2007, 08:32 PM)
already build new cage ~ more height than width ~ lols kasi fly2 skit haha..

I lately thinking and considering VERY hard till i'm now in dilemma whether to get a suggie or not sad.gif

suggies are super adorable and yes, i think i still have the extra time to take good care and play with it. but the prob is, i now have a dog, a schnauzer and i'm not sure if it would bite or create whole lot of stress for the suggie sad.gif

i know diff environments or diff smell will create stress for the suggies, so i'm here to seek for better opinions whether i should cut off my mind or what sad.gif

It is possible to have gliders and dogs together.... but it will only go well if your dog is friendly towards small animals. Terriers, hounds and hunting dogs have a tendency to chase and even kill gliders....

Look at how my dog is close to my glider hahahaah

Introduction is done when the glider was young.

Branches from our local fruit trees are a bit toxic... till now I don't even use branches coz have no idea which is safe or not. I do know only hibiscus plant is safe.

lilcatty,
Since Copper doesn't bark... and he doesn't have the urge to chase the hamster in the ball, it would be ok. Puppies are easier to train to accept small animals.

Never read up on age? Most people know gliders sexually mature around 7 to 8 months old.... they can start breeding but some gliders mature at 2 years old... so it depends. Females are also slightly smaller than males sometimes, you can see this clearly if the gliders have been fed a good and complete diet.

Apple cider vinegar, I did read it in a website before.... give them a tiny bit once a week by mixing it with fruit juices or Gatorade, it can detox the body I think.... Well, I do take apple cider vinegar for my health, it makes me pee alot hahahah.... if glider take, I bet they will be peeing machines.

Well, if you use Litter Star and give a frequent wash of the cage/ Flexarium, you won't have any smell. I keep my gliders in my room. The smell is minimal since I clean it often.

Yah, leashes should not be used on gliders. Some people use them coz they think it is cute or it makes them feel more in control of the gliders. To avoid injuries, just use the bonding method.

Personally, I feel bonding inside your shirt is more effective than a pouch. Gliders love to sleep against your skin. They feel safer. For girls, easy lah... us ladies have an easier time letting our gliders bond inside our clothes... but guys either wear a singlet or use the pouch.

For adult gliders, they can only hang on... but for joeys.... hehehe... they can sit somewhere safely and snugged. But yah, the pouch is always safer. I only do bra bonding when I am at home, in public, pouch lah.

Mebbe thru my experience all adults already, so pity them for having to hang on while sleeping. In the end they will always slip off.

Sometimes Iggy still tries to squeeze in or other times I'll be having extra bumps, thus I don't do it in public or my office...

Hun, what brand of fruit juices do you use?

I bought one for Iggy, err, don't remember the brand, but no added sugar or preservatives. However, it say contains 99% natural fruit juice... Do we have any 100% ones here?

Hahaa... I did it once in Public before with Kiah.... was at Secret Recipe, gave a shock to the waitress and it was weird coz my friends wanted to touch her but ended up touching me LOL.

Fruit juice, well.... it is hard to find 100%. Just make sure no added sugar or preservatives. I use Yeos and Just Juice. Ceres cloudy apple is really nice. You can also try Marigold. Make sure don't use Peel Fresh lah coz that is just sugar water hahaha.

Dear Sugar Glider owners,

I would like to show you guys what I saw today at Pets Wonderland MIDVALLEY.... We must boycott the shop! Do something about it! Look at how they treat gliders? I was so pissed that I took away one of their potential customers and convinced him to get from me instead....

I am just deeply sadden and shocked at how they can let their customers know this:

"You can pay deposit of Rm200 first and pay the rest next day to collect. Sugar gliders are easy pets. Babies are easier to keep while adults bite. Feed fruits, mealworms and dry catfood. Keep in a small bird cage or hamster cage. Put on wood shavings..... " The conversation went on but I didn't listen much coz I was eaves dropping.... anyway, I hope pictures can say a thousand words....

user posted image
I thought it was an empty box... but upon close inspection.....

There is a joey! Crammed in the corner..... No hide box??? No pouch??? Just newspaper??? Pity....

Poor glider is hiding from the light. Curled up tightly in a ball in a dirty hide box that has no roof.

user posted image
Glider at the back corner.... it is so tired and stressed that it is trying to hide away from everyone. But a transparent hamster house? That is crazy....

user posted image
A really under age joey!!!! Look at how it is trying to sleep! This staff was walking around, picking it up and showing to people.... say that this is the right age for a baby. Joeys are easy to care.... blah blah.

Sometimes seeing them how they treat animals in the pet shop, make me feel like just getting them and bringing them away from that place. But then the pet shop still earn, so they probably wouldn't even bother. mad.gif

Yah, I also felt like taking them away.... but then I do not want to support the shop in any way also. Pity those gliders... Rm488 still got people want to buy there. Why can't they source breeders or sellers here?

Well, for one is the Media cannot state the shop's name... or they will get sued.... so if I send a letter to them, they will erase out the name and say "a petshop in KL"... KL got so many petshops..... silly people.

It would be hard to actually advice petshops... they never listen! (The shops that sell exotics lah)

I have been to a few, I said "Har? Can feed catfood?" and the shop owners would say "Yes, it is very healthy. Eat bread also" Then when it comes to telling them the right diet, they smile or ignore me.... wahh.... damn nice the way they treat customers too. Example of Adpetshop at setapak:

Lady walks in, ask what animal is that? Owner takes this tiny underage joey and puts in her hand.

"That's a sugar glider baby. New kind of popular pet. Act's like squirrel and very easy to keep."

Lady looks amazed: "Wow, how much is it? What does it eat?"

Owner: "Rm400 only. Very easy wan, keep in a small bird cage with a hamster house is enough(shows example) and just give grapes and kuaci."

Then I butt in, "No lah, they need to eat lots of fruits and insects. I have 2 at home, taking care of them is like a child. Long life also, 10 years and more. Cage must be big too"

With that, the lady began to show a face that said "oh no, I don't want such commitment" and she kept saying she liked animals to kahwin so got anak and can sell at petshop.... anyway, she walked out of the shop.

Then I could feel the owner and his staff gave me stares and acted real cold towards me.

QUOTE(kikiz @ Sep 9 2007, 01:09 AM)
Ya me too, when I got my dog, actually before I got him, i already went online and do some research. The breeder for my dog also quite good in advising me, like what to expect, when he'll start shredding fur, how much to feed. But I usually check online to double confirm her information.

Her reason being, need to take care of both her dogs properly, so that they will breed properly. Her dogs are lovely actually.

Hun, don't bother about their cold stares, what you did was right, instead of letting a sugar glider be abused and neglected in the long-run.  nod.gif  Esp when the pet owners never give the correct advice or instructions on how to take care of a glider. All they want is just a quick buck.

In Australia, the pet shops really look after their pets! Actually I went to only 1, that pet shop refused to sell us the rabbit, until we show them that we have a cage and its big enough for it. Felt like I'm being interviewed whether I'm suitable for keeping a rabbit.  laugh.gif
*
Yah, it is true. I also went to many Australian petshops before when I was there for vacation. They really take good care but some aren't overstock with pets. They sell more petfood than pets, which is good and all also nice and fresh.

Well, I don't bother with the cold stares. I am glad that I pulled away a customer from Pets Wonderland and he got a joey from me instead hahaha.

It would be good if all of us here speak to any interested people in petshops that is looking for a glider. Tell them the pros and cons.... alot do not do research, they just listen to the staff, think ok then buy. So wrong....

QUOTE(coldfusionpower @ Sep 9 2007, 05:57 PM)

Eh, he still didn't contact you? Aiyah.... teruk lah LOL. Anyway, he sold off Peachu already....

QUOTE(vincent09 @ Sep 9 2007, 06:27 PM)
Actually do you guys really can call your sugar glider back when leave them outside the cage?
Just want to train something like that, most of them also not come back and need to play hide and seek with my suger glider.

Anyone success and can share about the experience ?
*
My glider will come. It is the way you bond and train name calling. I always call my gliders when they are eating and during feeding time, so they associate good stuff with their names. If you do not train from young, then when they are older, it is almost impossible to get a glider to come when you call its name.

Oh, that is normal for most animals... ear wax. You can always take a cotton bud and wipe it clean.

Trimming nails for me is pretty easy coz when my gliders were joeys, I handled their feet and play with them alot during nail cutting. So it gets easy. However when I cut other people's glider nails, I gotta be more careful.

Just 2 weeks ago I trimmed my friend's glider's nails. He was amazed that it took me 5 minutes when it took him about an hour....
