Just take good care of the little sugar glider

we all will be happy =D have a good night

thats what i am trying to do all along, taking good care and asking questions which i hope for a different answer than those i got from gerbil. well, basically, its the same type of answer i got. and yeah, i will try my best to take care of it. coz i dont spend my money and time just to watch it die. no one is that stupid for goodness sake... i love pets and thats why i got them. i am a pet lover just like u all, its just that maybe i dont like to do research as much as u do, but bold enough to ask questions, even if its stupid questions. from wat i learn, there is no such thing as a wrong question, questions are questions and i think ur teacher would even say that to u, ask if u dont know. will she say dont ask if u can find them in the book? well... u think for urself. whether i am someone who doesnt care or cares for my pet. i may be ego and ignorant, but i will listen to friendly advise. thats what i was hoping to get. sorry for all this scene. i would have fed my glider with dog food if i kept quiet and didnt ask, would i? so, now, did i do the right thing or wrong thing? pls think again...

Its so funny watching this all over again after what happens in the Gerbils Thread. Guess i will need to PM Crazymouse to clear things up here..

This is my opinion here. I defended you there at Gerbils Thread Jon and I will do it so here IF you are doing the correct thing in the first place. Ok, you are correct in some way of asking things that you do not know in the first place. I do agree, at some part, you do not deserve those kind of harsh statement by the guys.

But trust me on this, you WILL need to start researching instead of just asking around. Teachers are there to help you answer your doubts when you have then but do take note, they always encourage self-reading and improvement. If not, why is there a need for books. Therefore, next time, do try to read on some of the info first. At least that will get you well prepared and further enhance your knowledge = lowering the flame right?

I know you are a pet lover but you need to know, its not easy to keep one. Yes you have your own financial situation etc but as you know you are shifting, why not wait until everything is stable first. What i mean is, you are already well prepared and ready to cope with all the things, then its the right time to do so. Correct? People are so stress out with you having not enough things does not show that they are bashing you in the first place. They are worried the glider get neglected if you are not able to support it in the future.Who knows you have even more difficulties until you are not able to feed them right?Ok, i might have offended you somewhere but do know, pet lovers always care for their pets. Therefore, it is the lovers intention to always watch for good owners so that the pets get what they deserve like humans do..

No offence anywhere but guys, keep the flame apart. Keep this thread as a happy discussion place and people to share their knowledge. To Jon, understand my advice. Do some research and from there, if you do not know anything, you could always ask. If people know you did that, they will surely response correctly in a well manner.

If this offended anyone, tell me and i will delete this up. Happy discussion..

Dear Jon,

Okay fine, you have a glider already. We cannot force you to give it up now. So I will try and give my honest opinion and help you out smile.gif

It is true that it's better to keep gliders in pairs or with a companion, but in your case it is not really advisable, not only because of the cage matter, but also because both of the glider has different owner. You have to take into consideration that if they are used to being with each other, seperation can cause stress to them.

Gliders can live longer than 4 years. Up to 12 years in captivity. So after the period of you guys staying together, will you seperate them? Even if it's not 4 years from now, if you guys go back hometown, will you seperate them? I know you might say it's only a few days or week, but even a few days can cause stress to them. My glider wasn't eating very well when I brought him back hometown because of the different environment, had to really pujuk him and be with him most of the time.

Please think about this.

As for feeding, yes, there are people feeding dog food and baby food, these normally comes from commercial breeder which is totally a NO-NO. They are breeding for profit, not quality. Plus by feeding them these can cause harm to your glider. You did ask why baby food is not good and can be harmful cuz it's baby food right? Simple, because it's HUMAN baby food, it's meant for human, not gliders. Same thing goes for dog food, it's meant for DOGS, not gliders. It all goes down to the ingredient. That's why a glider is an exotic animal wink.gif

Remember, some things that are good for human, are NOT good for gliders. And food for another type of animal, CANNOT be a good food for another.

As for your situation not having a fridge, I will not comment on that, although it could be difficult because it's hard to keep things fresh, it is also not impossible. But it requires a lot of commitment for you to get fresh fruits daily and I hope you can do it.

For now, you must provide them with fresh fruits and mealworms. Mealworms are easy to keep, no need fridge wink.gif Just make sure you keep them in a well ventilated container with some oat bedding.

Make sure that your glider gets a variety of fresh fruits, not only apple. You can give them honeydew, papaya, mango, sengkuang, carrot, water chestnut, jambu air and so on. NO grapes, avacado and corn, okay.

I hope this will help you smile.gif

Lastly, if you really love pets, please try not to be lazy to do research. I know you said you have read on glider information here, but there are loads more out there. Now you have a glider, you MUST be rajin okay smile.gif It's not easy keeping an exotic, you must be truly commited, you can ask anyone here and they'll tell you a lot of story.

See, my answer here is so long, almost like reading a research also right? Now tell me if you're lazy to read this? Good things need time, effort and commitment.

Yes, agree with akachester too notworthy.gif

A true pet lover will consider a lot of things, so show us that your commited and worthy of being a pet lover okay smile.gif

Hun, haihh, all this commotion forgot to reply to you tongue.gif

Well, I thot of putting a mesh too, but then there would be no point of putting Litter Star lah right, cuz all the poop and pee would stick on the mesh more... Anyhow, don't seem to catch her doing it anymore, but dunnolah if she waits till I'm deep asleep laugh.gif

She is still such a scardy cat lah, everything also makes her jump. But she eats a LOT... Everything I give her can be finish like pretty quick and no leftovers at all! Dunno if she has a big appetite or evreything I give her is more delicious that what she has been eating before tongue.gif She is small when I got her remember hmm.gif

Haven't started bonding yet, cuz she doesn't seem like she has settled down with the new place yet, but I think gonna start a bit tomorrow lah smile.gif

Btw, I think the mix cannot wait lah till I come over, cuz left for only 2-3 night more tongue.gif

The best type of staple food for them would be Hun's mix, fresh fruits + mealworms.
And I don't think those two types of food you've mentioned are being sold here in Malaysia. So far I've never seen anyone in the suggie thread mentioning about them.

You can't find rep-cal, vionate and zookeeper's secret here in Malaysia.

We really lack of sugar glider stuff, that's why Hun makes the mix, I make the pouch and so on so forth.

There are glider staple food sold around, but they are NO good and the gliders do not like them.

You can substitute the supplement with some others that are available here, but it is very difficult to get the right one and I am not sure which one too.

I think this has been discussed before, you can check on the prev-prev post.

Some things has been repeatedly discussed, that's why we request new owners to do proper research even reading thru the thread, to avoid repeated stuff, so you can't blame the people who seem a bit mad at discussing the same thing over and over again smile.gif

You can search for Leadbeater's mix if you want to blend some things up. It can be found in the same website you search for the rep-cal and vionate smile.gif

Or just google for it. There are many versions so search carefully.

But if you start blending things up, you will need a fridge to store it too. You can't blend it in small portion.

But have you planned for one right after you get back to Malacca?
You will need a fridge to prevent your own mix from going bad.

I'm afraid anything fresh you blend will not even last 1 day.

If you feed anything at night, you must remove any leftover the next morning cuz it will be rotten and make your glider sick if they eat it.

Don't add mealworm or cricket to the blend, it will spoil everything faster and make the blended stuff smellier.

I think it is better not to the blending thing before you get a fridge.

Added on May 22, 2007, 12:58 pmBtw, you can look for those mini fridge at almost any electrical store, be it malacca or KL. Go out and survey what fits your budget. We can't help you in that area. It'll cost you a few hundred.

Here. Check the home appliances category.
http://brothers.com.my/products_category.asp

I guess the mini car freezer should be enough to fit one mix in there. And it's very affordable too. Will definitely be able to fit your budget. smile.gif
