well only priority mail international tracking starting with C/CP will have tracking after leaving USA ( will be automatically converted into poslaju within malaysia ) while other tracking like L will only having tracking till leaving USA then after that it's chance 50/50 if you can get it because it's become a normal parcel therefore no more tracking within msia.

yes electronic toys will have taxed. i saw a guy bringing in soft toys and he got taxed as well... you need to check at custom website because if you kena custom duty tax + sales tax ( which is based on ur real value *price of item+insurance+delivery* written on the invoice or box )

if you have the USA tracking number... you can check your tracking at trace-trace.com (very useful website!)

Many of us has purchase things online, many from Amazon, eBay, playasia, yesasia and etc...

As a regular online buyer, you should know sometimes your goods will be held by the custom, and require you to pay tax in order for them to release the items.

If such case happened, do you know how much you'll need to pay? or do you need to pay at all?

So guys, here's a useful site that you can refer to in case your items are withheld by the custom.  You should find out in advance first how much you need to pay, and avoid being slaughtered by the corrupt custom officers.

So here's the link:
http://www.customs.gov.my/kastam/

How to search:
Go under the first field on top menu "Customs"
Then select "Customs Duties Order 1996" or "AHTN Duties Order 2004"
Select "Schedule 1" from the submenu
Do a search on right hand column

Bear in mind that not all of the search will end up with a positive result
Here's some of the things I found out from there:
- cameras of all kind like non-digital/digital cameras/video camera are totally tax free (heading 8525), same with camera accessories like lenses or flash (heading 9001)
- Video games console are taxable with 10% import tax (heading 9504)
- Video projectors are tax free (heading 8528)
- Blank CD/DVD are tax free (heading 8523)
- Figurines are taxable with 5% import tax (heading 9502 and 9503)

btw, I still can't find what's the actual tax for movie/games disc.
Appreciate if anyone can find the info and put it here. icon_rolleyes.gif

there are tracking number by priority mail... of course the tracking number would have to be given by the seller since they are the one posting the item out...

suppose to be below RM500 including shipping fees are not taxable.. but if your box/parcel is big enough... might be detained... however since you are using DHL, you can appoint DHL to do everything for you.

however hairdryer is electronic item ( 10% tax ) so u can pray and keep your fingers crossed that your item will be smooth sailing...

Hello and thanks for all the information provided here.

I am planning to import a very special glass shisha from the U.S

Just one, for personal use and not for selling. But its glass, would there be any custom stop and tax?

If I'm not mistaken, its UPS priority Mail?

Hi, I tried searching on the customs websites but couldn't find what I was looking for so hopefully someone can help me out!

I am thinking of asking a friend in the USA to send a kindle paperwhite to Malaysia via USPS Registered Mail. Is it a taxable item or will it get held up at customs?

Just curious, but what category would a kindle (e-reader) fall under? Computer?

HI dude,

Go and declare it your self in the terminal, the actual HS CODE is 420292900 only 10% taxes frm your value after conversion.
The Freight amount should read as below <<RM150....This DHL reps are absurd !

Believe me i know they are just being ridiculous not the CUSTOMS but the clearing agent, go and do it your self !
*
Scenario 1:

Lets say the parcel is forwarded by Fedex, is there any way to instruct the clearing agent to hold the parcel for personal clearance? I found that those clearing agent working in forwarding company simply tembak the HS code and resulted in hefty import duty. As such self clearance is better.

Scenario 2:

If the parcel is sent through normal airmail (15-21days), who will normally did the custom clearance? The goods always reach doorstep duty free but on high value item personal clearance is still preferred...

Question 3:

For parcel recipient in KL Selangor, we need to perform custom clearance in KOMPLEKS KASTAM situated near LCCT right? What will be the procedure like?

Question 4:

Assuming there are 2 items inside a parcel, 1 kena duty another no duty, can i open up the parcel and send back the kena duty item to the sender? Then clear out the duty free item?

TQ

Added on December 25, 2012, 2:35 pmIn addition, is it possible to reclaim back the import duty which wrongly pay due to wrong HS code suggested by the kastam?

The incompetence officer simply slab high duty using the wrong code and it was wrongly pay for. The duty was RM 2,000 for one single item.....

nope you cannot reclaim back money.. everything has to settle at the 1st time...

Scenario 1 : Self clearance is always better
Scenario 2 : Custom clearance normally takes about 1 hour ( fastest)
Question 3 : It depends on whether your item is air freight then it's at LCCT, sometimes if your item is not air freight it can get stuck at Port Klang Custom.
Question 4 : Nope, you cannot do that, you would have to pay the duty in order to take both items and not just take a single item...

Do prepare to pay 30% import duty + 10% sales tax for the item. I think most likely the kastam will consider it as computer item and slab full import duty on it since USA got no FTA with Malaysia.

You may get the sender to put a vague description on the airway bill document to confuse the kastam, but the shortfall is that if the parcel went missing it will be difficult to claim insurance (if you are importing via CIF)

Hi guys, i've go through the thread and still can't manage to find my solution regarding importing cosmetics to Malaysia

i really need help here huhuhu...
from my experience, all my items got detained from the customs and then send to the pharmacy, at the end i was being asked to go and notify for my item at bpfk.gov.my

i really don't think all of the cosmetic seller register here, because it is expensive, after register with rm300 if not mistaken, then have to add addtional rm50 for each item you import

that time i just import it directly, i've no company, just my name and my home address, and then i urge the custom to deliver it to me asap, when they were already 2 days in my city,

is it just bad luck or i really do have to go register at bpfk.gov.my,
please help me out here, who ever have experience.. sad.gif((

Yes, you have to have your product notified. Un-notified cosmetics (as well as unregistered medicine, herbal products, vitamins and supplement) are not allowed to be brought in to Malaysia, not much of a problem of tax and duty.

Reason: You don't want the cosmetics/medicines/supplements etc that you bought in pharmacies/stores to be unregulated, right? Unregulated = no traceability and no punishment if you sell fake cosmetics/drugs that destroy faces/kill people.

Source: I am from enforcement division of pharmacy

PS: PLEASE DO NOT BUY COSMETICS/MEDICINES/SUPPLEMENT FROM THE INTERNET, especially from Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong. The risk of your cosmetic kena tahan is very high. If you still want to buy from the Internet, please make sure that it for less than 1 month usage so that you use the "for personal use only" reason to argue with the pharmacy people. I have personally have to tahan thousands Ringgit worth of cosmetics.

P.PS: Even if the cosmetics/medicines/supplements is registered/notified in Malaysia (a.k.a. you can buy in Malaysia), do not bring in these item for more than 1 month as well, as you will need to have import permit or written authorisation from the company who register the product in the first place.

Thanks for reply!

so you mean that as long as i notify my cosmetics, then there will be no problem even i sell more than 1 month usage item right,
but how if the product already been registered by the authorized company in malaysia, e.g. SK-II company has already registered themselves, can i still be sk-ii notification holder?

i did call to bpfk and ask, they told me i should get the authorized dealer permit before i notify their product. i really confuse, if u know the process please tell me bro
does that mean i will never get to sell anything if the authorized dealer never let me to? cant i just sell anything i want sad.gif

The "Product Notification" is another word for "registered cosmetic with import permit". To get that notification, you need to have the manufacturer's authorisation a.k. as the legal importer. At the same time, cosmetics like SK-II has already been registered by another company, and most probably bound by contract with the manufacturer. This means that the manufacturer in Japan most probably will not sign an agreement with you. In this case, you will need written approval from the company with that Product Notification (a.k.a. Notification Holder) so that you are allowed to import the product. So yeah, most probably the Notification Holder will not allow you to import the product they spend money to bought the right from the original company.

For unregistered product, yes you need to register the cosmetics BEFORE you import it. The initial registration process itself is pretty troublesome, but after the first step the whole thing will be relatively easy. It is more cost effective if you open a company and register MANY COSMETICS under the company name, of course with the approval from the company that you are going to import from, since it is RM300+ for registration and RM50 per product.

So to answer your question, yes, you can sell the cosmetics if you are the Notification Holder or with written approval from Notification Holder.

totally get it, u really helpful bro thanks!

for unregistered product, which is it not exist in the quest3 in bpfk website, does it mean there is no any notification holder?
so if i'm going to register, do i still need manufacturer authorisation? because if yes, i will have to get it from overseas?
i mean if i dont sell sk-ii, i sell other brand without anyone notify it before, which also we dont have any manufacturer or retailer here

besides that, you mean open a company with several "brand name" of cosmetics registered is better?

Thanks for your help, moniqee and UyxoR! I'm guessing since I got 2 different answers, it's a 50-50 chance I may get taxed huh? biggrin.gif I guess with the malaysian customs, everything is a matter of luck and chance. Will ask my friend to use USPS Priority Mail International with tracking with the value at USD$100 and hope for the best!

Correct me if I'm wrong though, but if the customs officers consider the kindle as a computer item, it shouldn't be taxed right? I read in some of the previous replies that computer items aren't taxable?
