QUOTE(fuik1650 @ Jun 20 2017, 11:20 PM) Want to share my experience using EGPU (EXP GDC Beast V8 model) on my Lenovo Y500 (default gpu GT750M) with GTX1060. 1) Installation : a) In my case, im using my wifi PCIE X1 slot and need a replacement external wifi dongle. b) Need to disable internal GPU. If not BSOD/hang appear (In my case) c) A bit pain in the ass since need to reformat 3 time for my laptop to detect the EGPU and my ssd died along the way (In my case) d) Not all Nvidia drivers are working with the EGPU, need to find a suitable one. e) On some cases, need to flash the bios due to whitelist removal required for the PCIE lane to detect the EGPU while others are simple as plug and play. f) Do take note on the type of your laptop slot/connection. It can be express card slot, PCIE or mPCIE, etc. Price can be more expensive if using rare adapter. g) Need to be very patient to do try and error if struck bad luck as i am. Also do a quick search 1st for your laptop model whether the EGPU support it or not. My Y500 lots of ppl are using EGPU hence plenty of problem and solution too. 2) Performance : a) My favourite game at that time is Rise of the Tomb Rider. In PC setting, high texture can get stable 60 FPS, while on my Y500, a stable 30~40 FPS. b) The FPS difference due to X1 lane at the PCIE. My i7 3series no prob to handle the GPU. c) On some cases, the processor of the laptop cant handle the GPU (bottleneck) hence very obvious FPS drop. So need to choose carefully on GPU type, not too high end and not too low end. 3) Cost : a) GPU RM1K, EGPU RM250, PSU RM200, WIFI dongle RM50. So total for my EGPU setup = RM1.5K b) You can find cheaper price at Ebay,Taobau or etc. In Malaysia, a new unit will cost you between RM150~250 (depend on brand and version) or find a 2nd hand at EGPU FB Malaysia. Happy hunting and good luck This post has been edited by BigSaver: Jun 22 2017, 08:52 AM kenykhun liked this post

The thunderbolt connected eGPU is worth it if your laptop is pretty high spec'd but does not have a discrete graphics card.
Note that you lose a lot of the performance of the GPU compared to using it on a desktop. Reviews have concluded that a 1080 in a eGPU only comes close to a 1060 on a laptop due to the bandwidth limitation of the Thunderbolt 3/2 connection. Personally I think if you have the money to buy the eGPU case and a power graphics card to go with, you might as well just build a desktop. But if you have a pretty high end laptop that doesn't come with a good GPU, you might want to consider getting it. Just don't set your expectations too high. The whole set up for the eGPU and GC of your choice can come up to around RM 4000 if you go high end. The case itself is around RM 2k, more or less around that range. |
