After hearing so much about Japan, I’m about to make my first trip to Japan end of the year! And your comment makes me quite excited!!

I wonder if Japan will charm me as much as Europa does. I really love Europa to the point that the bucket list is to cover all Europa countries before I turn 40 haha..

I’ll have one week in Tokyo so should be able to take things slowly - will leave the other cities/towns for another time.. I just hope winter won’t damper the mood too much..

few thing can't miss in tokyo during winter
1. disneysea
2. winter illumination(specifically roponggi hill)
*
I’ll be there one day before Christmas - hopefully still in time to see the lights smile.gif The Roppongi Hill one will end on 25/12 so I might be able to catch it!

Not exactly a fan of Disney - never been to any Disneyland, and don’t think my partner enjoys Disney either, so may give it a miss

QUOTE(sweet_pez @ Oct 24 2017, 03:14 PM)
Wise choice. If you have only 1 week, explore within the city. But I guess you'll have time to do at least 1-2 days of side trip such as to Odaiba/ Kamakura/ Hakone etc if you're not going to spend a day in Disney. Well... even if you are, there'll still be time for side trip if you're keen icon_idea.gif anything is possible.

Winter? The only thing that dampens the mood for me in winter was - early nightfall. It got dark fairly early. Wished we were more of a early morning peeps so at least can leave the house earlier hahahaha. Otherwise, just enjoy the cold and have nice some hot sake laugh.gif Enjoy Tokyo the winter way.
In a holiday, you're the ones who make the mood so liven up the atmosphere with each other's company.

Yeah will definitely make some day trips out of Tokyo. Have yet to really plan but will take the three suggestions here as considerations! Many thanks!!

Spent my Xmas in Europe last year and it was too cold (many I’m also not feeling too well) to fully enjoy myself, and it was not even snowing, max -2 sad.gif I hope this year’s experience will be different!

i'm not a fan of disney also
went to HK disney...ok lah
thn went tokyo disneysea...WOW...so much difference
but i went on their special anniversary, many extras
thats my 2 cent though
the ending fireworks are totally different than u would see on normal disney
its the only disneysea in the world, so for me..i'll just give it a go laugh.gif

as for the winter illumination, roppngi hill isn't the only place to see it but it is indeed the most recognized
*
Oh really?!! Then let me re-consider about Disney Sea again! I always thought the best theme parks will be in US and if I really wanna go I might just go to those in the US -> just my personal opinion.

Yup I googled and saw quite a bit of illumination but a few end earlier than the rest, so the plan is to fit in one per night (if possible), at least I see something specific to year end festive season.

europe has christmas market for the whole dec...

japan doesn’t have christmas market but it offers something else that europe doesn’t have ...haha
*
I think I went with too high expectations for Christmas market and was a bit disappointed to find out that despite the small size, the things offered are quite repetitive, and some Christmas market set up (which is usually at the main square) blocked some of the pretty buildings/sights sad.gif Then again I have yet to go to the famous one like Nuremberg. Sorry for the OT this belongs somewhere else.

i see...

the christmas markets in each european country has its own charm...
they sell mulled wine...wooden toys...various kinds of food...and of course decorations, and they have temporary stages built for singing and performance as well

but we will leave this europe topic to another thread...hehe
*
The mulled wine!!! - life saver on a cold winter night! I suppose the equivalent of this in Japan is their hot sake?

We will talk about all-inclusive rate - from luggage to meal.
RM1,800 is considered expensive.
RM1,500 for MAS or JAL is average price. Can consider.
RM1,200 for MAS/ JAL or other full board carrier is considered good price/ cheap.
RM1,000 and below is considered really cheap.

AA goes between RM1,000 (when there's promo) to RM1,500.

Winter time the day is short (unless you leave early) and night comes early. It's really hard to tell you "where" people visit in winter because it's subjective. Just choose a destination that attracts you. What I like about winter is the illuminations at night, and you can consider going during the period of New Year. However, NY celebration in Japan isn't like how we do it here. They do not have countdown parties and fireworks - although certain part of Tokyo may start to change or have small parties in bars or pubs.

Japanese commonly goes to the temple to pray during midnight and dispose the old charms, while getting new ones at the temple. On NY's day they head to the temple to pray as well, so expect congestion in the train and temples (extremely crowded). However you may get to enjoy street snacks as some places will have rows and rows of street food nearby/ outside the temple. On 2nd January - it's the best day for shopping. You get to buy Fukubukuro (lucky bag) for low prices in a lot of stores in Japan. Get your cash/ credit card ready!!! Note that it only happens for 1 day - only on 2nd Jan of each year.

More on Fukubukuro:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fukubukuro
https://izanau.com/article/fukubukuro

The downside of winter: Some stores/ restaurants/ attractions are closed from 30th Dec to 2nd or 3rd Jan (or even longer).

I think it’s super difficult to get average price for peak period of Xmas and New Year - so I splurged on JAL’s PE, hopefully the $ will be worth it.

Thanks for touching on the NYE topic. Here’s our plan for our NYE:
We are planning to countdown to the new year in Shibuya, and then slowly stroll back to our accoms in Shinjuku (it’ll be approx 4km walk in the cold ~1 hour which we are prepare to do), and drop by Meiji Jingu along the way to experience the atmosphere. I saw the crowd in google during NYE countdown and the shrine and it’s quite scary lol!
Any comments on the above plan or any other suggestions of NY countdown? We are not interested in the bars/pubs, and prefer public area/event (eg Taipei 101).

That's the annoying system, they make you pay. However, that's the price one has to pay for cheap flights.

But similarly, I hate it when other people ask me to switch seats. Please, just pay if you want to sit with your family or friends.
My flight to Japan - i had seats with my friends but because this family must be seated together, they took my seat before I arrived. The flight attendant then told me about it and I had to take the guy's seat. Fairness? None. Annoyance? Aplenty. So that's why no more AA  ranting.gif  You can say I should have been more "understanding" to "give my seat away" but I'll say that's up to individual. Dude, that's MY seat. You should have waited for me to ARRIVE, then ask. Not sit on it and pretend nothing happened and didn't even say thank you or anything.

Yes, if they asked nicely, I will give up my seat yet no doubt I will tell them that next time please just pay a little additional to ensure you're seated together rather than taking someone else's seat.

So end of the day, please, refrain from asking others to change seats with you. Cough up that additional amount or stay in your assigned seat please. Do not make it inconvenient for other passengers. It's a tough situation because if they refuse, it may seem like they're inconsiderate.
*
Can ask AirAsia for refund?

Then again if I’m travelling alone and the seat change is to my advantage, eg I’m assigned a middle seat but am given the opportunity to swap to an aisle or window seat, I’ll be more than happy to swap! So depending on the situation, a change of seat will be beneficial to both parties.
