Ajax's Abdelhak Nouri suffers 'severe and permanent brain damage'

Ajax midfielder Abdelhak Nouri has suffered "severe and permanent brain damage" after collapsing during a preseason friendly game in Austria on Saturday.

The Dutch club "it received very bad news regarding the condition of Abdelhak Nouri" after doctors at a hospital in Innsbruck woke him from an induced coma.

In a post on their official Twitter account, the club said: "#Ajax are deeply saddened by the news that Appie Nouri has been diagnosed with serious and permanent brain damage..."

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his loved ones in this difficult time."

Nouri's brother Abderrahim told AD: "The doctors are quite confident that he will not recover. If he were to wake up, he would not be able to think, eat, talk, walk or even recognise people. He would not be able to function normally.

"But we are not giving up. God will decide his fate. Our religion [Islam] teaches us to accept things and we are praying for his recovery.

"We think this life is only temporary and the eternal comes after this one, but everybody would have liked to see him score goals first."

The diagnosis comes two days after tests indicated that Nouri's heart was undamaged while a CT scan of his brain and neurological tests showed no irregularities either.

Ajax said on Tuesday that doctors were "cautiously optimistic about his recovery."


The 20-year-old Dutchman collapsed and was taken to hospital by helicopter with Ajax trailing Werder Bremen 2-1 in Saturday's preseason friendly.

The game in Zillertal in the Austrian Alps was abandoned after the 70th-minute incident.

Jose Mourinho has got Manchester United fans very excited by accidentally mentioning Alexis Sanchez’s name when asked an unrelated question at his post-match press conference.

The Portuguese oversaw a 5-2 victory against LA Galaxy in the early hours of Sunday morning, and afterwards he was asked, among other things, about Real Madrid frontman Alvaro Morata.

But curiously, Mourinho appeared to get the Spanish striker and Arsenal’s wantaway Chilean mixed up, with many fans now speculating that it was a Freudian slip hinting at genuine interest.

When Mourinho was asked by a Spanish journalist if United were attempting to sign Morata, he replied in Spanish: ‘It is a question for Florentino [Perez, the Real president]. I don’t know the first thing about Sanchez.’

The exchange got pulses racing, with United fans debating whether it was an accidental slip of the tongue or something more substantial.

Mourinho is in the market for a new winger, and has been tracking Inter’s Ivan Perisic for some months, but they have never previously been in the frame for Sanchez, with Man City, PSG and Bayern Munich his primary suitors.

Of course, it is possible that the Special One innocently misspoke, or he would even have been referring to a different player – midfielder Renato Sanches, perhaps.

But even his choice of language – saying ‘I don’t know’ rather than categorically ruling out a transfer, as he did with ‘mission impossible’ Cristiano Ronaldo – has got United fans hot under the collar.

Sanchez all but confirmed his desire to leave Arsenal on Saturday, telling reporters back in Chile that he wants to play in the Champions League – something the Gunners cannot currently offer him.

‘I want to play the Champions League,’ Sanchez told Radio Sport Chile when quizzed over his future at a football tournament in his hometown Tocopilla.

‘The decision does not depend on me, I have to wait for Arsenal.

‘I’ve made my decision, now I wait for Arsenal’s reply. The idea is to play and win the Champions League. I’ve dreamt about it since I was a kid.’
