Hi, thinking to get a new large HDD for NAS and I haven't followed the pricing of hardware ever since our currency has plunged.

So what would be the best bang per buck HDD for NAS (in terms of RM/TB) hmm.gif

That's a NAS no? You still need to put your own HDD in right? hmm.gif

also compare EXTERNAL HDD drive, the last round I bought external 4TB HDD as its cheaper than internal to put in my NAS ; the best is you get the external casing for "free"

NAS HDDs tends to be more expensive as they are designed to be more reliable.
In theory, you should be able to use whatever drive you want, as long as you're ok with the potential issues.

Also, one major question to ask is, what is your purpose with the NAS? Is it only for backups? Is it accessed daily for media consumption?
That might help you make the decision based on your usage.

Basic backups (about 20TB) along with single user media consumption (not very frequent)

I'll be reusing my friend's old PC as a NAS:

Pentium E5200
Team Elite 4GB DDR3
Intel DG41WV board
1xWD Blue 500GB+1xWD Red 8TB (for now)
Cap Ayam PSU and case (will be upgrading soon)

Also what is the best tool to monitor disk health? Preferably with something that sends an email to me informing that the drive is failing? hmm.gif

I did - I just bought a WD Easystore 8TB from Best Buy for about RM950. tongue.gif

Sure it might be risky (the drive may end up DOA) but at least it is much cheaper than most retailers here brows.gif

So what UPS would be good for my future NAS? My house power constantly cuts out whenever the washing machine is used (most likely due to aging but I'm not sure) sweat.gif

Depends on your power supply. 800VA (480W max) should work fine with cap ayam.

I found a 800VA APC UPS for RM230 - should be OK right? hmm.gif

APC is a well known brand. Definitely its fine. Just make sure the PSU you plan to upgrade does not go over 480W. It will cause overload alarm.

if you using the NAS as pure file storage/FTP for HOME USE, just invest in NAS storage rather convert an old PC to NAS...

NAS typically use low power CPU ... while old PCs tend to use up electricity unnecessarily

Unless you doing transcoding on the fly i.e streaming and re-encode, then PC is better option

I can't do that as I need to run Google Drive and Blackblaze - which does not have a native client for NAS icon_idea.gif

My board only has 4 SATA 2 ports - what PCI-E to SATA card is recommended for reliability as I will likely to add more HDDs in the near future? I found out the best ones are PCI-E to SAS expansion cards but their are very hard to find here sweat.gif

You can get it from ebay. I already bought 2 SATA 6Gbps 2-port cards.
