shutter speed, aperture, ISO are not "specs". those are exposure settings when shooting a photo.

arent there specialized cameras for these type of things? those pen-shaped ones. why DSLR?

1) sony a6000

Or

2) decent smartphone. More than enough for social media photo.

For budget like 2000 not recommended to use dslr. Unless u want to invest more money into it.

Get a macro lens, then invest on some lighting.

I think what above mention Sony A6000 is a good choice.

A6000
Sony 50mm macro

Then 1 flash ( if you are pro)

If not get a ring light

Dont trust ur friend, cause base on the info he gave u he dont even know how to operate a camera properly and deem that as Camera Spec....

need to know ur end picture gonna place where first?
A4 print?
Web?
Poster?
billboard?

If poster u definitely need to have slightly better budget.

I think a lot of pro here definitely gonna bash me here...(picture is not about gear)
well sometimes, yes it is if you using it for commercial...

ok let me tell u what different from an expensive lens and a stock lens?
and also expensive camera vs cheap camera

LENS
Image quality and light
cheap lens cannot go down to f2.8, and also cant get so great picture quality once you cropped ( most probaly you going to do that if you are taking dental)
where else expensive lens once you cropped majority of the time ur image is sharp enough to use

Camera
ISO/low light performance ( this over the year hit me most, other than that AF point, FPS , etc etc doesnt cause much on me)
Both expensive and cheap camera can set a ISO 800
but both at ISO 800 their noise level different, and usually cheaper camera has smaller sensor size and hence noise performance even worse.
but all these can be solve if you have a great lighting

Okay so back to suggestion....

if you still want to remain at RM 2k
Invest on strobe light( constant lighting), and take with your handphone. no point invest on DSLR or camera ( this about RM 600 for a set
or Ring light about RM 300 u can get a good one

There's a lot of and shoots that has manual settings in which would make u able to use the settings u put in just now.

Doesnt mean that if all your friends use dslr u need to get an slr. Thats what we call peer pressure.

And the course u attended asked u to use that setting?
What if u r indoors or in low light situation?

Can you suggest me a ring light for a6000? Cos Sony use other brand usually need to buy adapter.
And is that any proper term for the ring light, cos when I google, I can't really find that kind of ring.

Not too sure what you mean by intraoral. If meaning 'inside' mouth instead of shooting at gapping mouth, then this more like special equipment with probe camera. Either a dentist or doctor with specialised equipment can help but I don't think going to be cheap if insist on dslr set up.

Don't know who told u to go F32 straight but you don't go full aperture stop down unless u know its diffraction limit. Start with F10 then incrementally stop down to F11, F12 and so on until u find the max sharpness. Also depending on your max shutter speed sync with flash (especially on budget), F32 may not give u sufficient light to inspect anything.

Won't really suggest a6000 on this cause sony doesn't have much history on setting up equipment for specialized purpose so getting parts may get tricky. Would be better to go canon or nikon. I have seen doctors using canon/nikon specially to inspect eye, mouth etc.

Unfortunately if TS is doing this photoshoot for dentistry reason, photogear is important. Higher mp camera with good quality lens able to capture minute detail of teeth which is important to spot defects and able to correct white balance to ensure correct colour capture (u don't want to see ur teeth all magenta). Again, I don't know what TS planning to use the setup for. If for billboard only, camera phone may be enough.

it's ok, cause the place he use is control area,
he got access to all the light he has.

What makes terrible picture is because under expose.
most DSLR these day , if sufficient light will take decent photo

How u control area in mouth lol laugh.gif

To some people, dslr picture like same as smartphone camera but if you start editing u start noticing straight away the dynamic range, colour reproduction/accuracy, clarity and so on even with sufficient light. That's why if people only care about jpeg and dont want manual hassle, I would recommend smartphone enough but to those with keen eyes and notice subtle quality detail like banding, dslr/mirrorless is the way to go. Under expose can be easily fixed and in fact under some circumstances, under exposing may be better than balanced exposure if u knw how to do edit.

Base on what he described I really believe he want to use it for work. I strongly believe what he will use is out from camera .jpeg. no time to go edit and adjust the raw file.

Seriously it's not about the gear, it is about the technique and application

I assume that you might be a dental student? or Dentist taking a picture for your case record. You can use the dental light as lighting, so the ring light is not really a necessary, but you can get one if you think its not bright enough. A simple kit lens can get things done actually if its just for case record. Given that you are not doing those dental branding advertisement level of shooting, a simple A6000 + kit lens is more than enough. The most important part is the lighting. Project the light nicely and you can get a nice intraoral shots.

Like I said many times. I no idea what TS is planning to do, what the purpose and exactly what kind of quality he is looking for. Giving wrong assumption like he only need jpeg or smartphone camera may set him back more money than actual camera set up he needs.

Some doctors I went to (private clinic at that) have like roughly thousand dollar worth of full frame camera gear cause they need to check every minute detail of the picture they took on patients body. There's even a saying a forensic team need high mp camera with good lens to capture photograph of body autopsy cause never know if a minute needle pin wound is missed.

Actually Im dentist and My plan is to take case report only, sometime when we wan to shoot the area of interest which is far back in the mouth, the cheek will block the light coming in thus many doctors use a ring flash.
and those aperture F32,F28 is suggested by our master dental team who also use ring flash for their photography.

Anyway, i got friend who use yongnuo ring flash with olympus mirrorless but when i try to attach it to my sony a6000 , cant even fit thru, so i would love to know any of you is good in this field that suggest me a certain model that i can directly order it from the store without adapter OR with an adapter also is fine but budget not high. Definitely not sony original ring flash which cost a bomb

yes , u're right with proper tech, front tooth shooting is like sapsapwater, problem is far end area near molar region usually is very dark due to cheek blocking the light, and dental chair light is not suitable in this case, cause i will reflect the light and lose all the details of the tooth.

I wont suggest a6000 cause there isnt really much specialised equipment for it. Even if does, very few have the exp to set it up. Advice to stick to canon or nikon if possible. Ur master dental may not know what he is talking about camera stuff if he suggest f28 from get go. Depending on lens, distance, sensor size, u dont need that much depth of field. U need to experiment a bit.

Perhaps try to get advice from camera shop like YLcamera if they have what u want. You may not even necessary need a ring flash, just perhaps a secondary light will do. Flash mainly used if u want to freeze the subject.

Or perhaps something like this in lazada: http://www.lazada.com.my/dream-chaser-ring...0.0.op2W9B&ff=1

Also extra reading on diffraction effect with small aperture.
