one question to ask sifu sifu here...

if my aquarium doesnt have filter, i only have air pump..

is tat okay??

as i'm a beginner, i thinking of trying the bottle CO2 treatment...the one that directly plug from the bottle and straightaway to the diffuser...

is tat advisable to try tat?
*
any fishes or fauna inside??... if yes water quality will get dirty fast... better to have a water filter... air pump is optional, as long as the water is circulating....

care to share pics of ur tank??..

Using an air pump will NOT reduce CO2 in the tank.It just adds more diluted air into the water.
*
but water ripple cuased by air bubble will cause much co2 to escape from the water...

1 - looks like you need to buy and if u wanna buy it, buy a smaller one. then u can play around with the arrangement of ur hardscape. try avoid using bogwood if your tank is small.

2 - your tank i assume not matured yet. yes you can uproot the stem plant first. they wont die easily when uprooted and re-plant back. it's still ok if u dun wan to make the backside higher. it;s not a must anyway. it just more for creating the depth. but u can achieve this with plant arrangement also.

3 - background plant normally a plant that grows high. usually is a stem plant. you can get vivipara or acicularis (for not so high tank) too. mid ground plant are those plant that is higher than ur foreground but shorter than background plant. got alot of plant range for this purpose like blyxa japonica, HG, mini java fern (but this one need to attach to something), anubias (also need to attach to something), etc etc.... have a look around on the net and read about their maximum growth. you;ll get the idea.

btw, im a newbie too. with my limited knowledge,my opinion might be against the pro's . sweat.gif
*
i notice my DW dun look very nice also... datz why a headache to make my hardscape looks nice...
small stones ahh??... can kutip from roadside??.. coz LFS usually has large ones... and they sell by rm4/kg... expensive sial....
as for all the plants u mentioned, i did some research on internet adi... but those plants i want doesnt appear in LFS... and plants appear in LFS didnt mentioned in da internet.... rclxub.gif

hahhaha just own opinion lah even number don't look nice tongue.gif no need uproot though just push some of the frontground soil up to the back smile.gif

if push the soil... the 2 layer substrate will get mixed up lor... not nice la... coz bottom gravel is very colorful... sweat.gif

erm..catacomb bro, "small" i mean is not stones. i mean if you wanna go buy another wood, buy a smaller one. there's another type of wood beside bogwood and normally doesnt comes cheap. but you can buy the small size one like ranting2 size. the just cost around RM5-10 normally each. And for the stone you said want kutip from roadside, errr.. unless you know what is that stones and check for their alkalinity/acidity, then i hardly suggest you kutip em and put in your tank. they'll affect your water parameter and worst, even can make your fauna died overnight sometimes.  nod.gif

yes, normally LFS will sell by kilos. RM4/kg is consider cheap price in fact (but im not sure what stones are you referring to anyway). ah, that's not the point. normallyy, we bought a big one, and then use hammer and a pick, and break em to smaller pieces. or..u can always hire those indonesian workers in construction site to help break em with their freaking big hammer (i never do this before...just came up on my mind tho). whistling.gif

for the plants, hmm... ya i can say not many LFS carrying plants for aquascapers. i also used to have a hard time too to find em. where do u stay? if around KL/Selangor i can help you with my shot paper list of "place-to-go-to-do-shopping"  biggrin.gif LOL~!

p/s : btw, dun say ur DW not nice. for me, every nature is nice. just play around with it and eventually you'll know what to do with it. but it;s always good to have options  wink.gif
*
thanks for the advices.... i heard rocks can be tested using vinegar... so far havent found any nice rocks by the roadside worth testing... lolz...
today i went LFS again... saw some nice healthy stem plants and some mid height plants available.. i grab them together with some hair grass... see the result below...

yea... quite messy... nature is like dat afterall... tongue.gif

QUOTE(ching4ever @ Feb 6 2009, 06:57 PM)
The CO2 you mentioned is not worth the price. You can DIY yourself with less than RM10 bucks and refill for each time not more than RM3 though.
*
yea... datz what i'm using now... since i so free can refil the co2 yeast anytime now.... tongue.gif

QUOTE(playerseeker @ Feb 6 2009, 11:02 PM)
hey guys...

i tried step by step...currently my tank doesnt have CO2 and the soil...i bought sand only...but i've bought 3 plants.....i dun know the 2 plants but another one is java moss...the shop lady told me tat java moss cant grow without CO2...i dunnu whether is true or not..

because of budget constraint...tat's why no soil and CO2....

But i tied all 3 plants on a wood i bought....can the plant grow??

i have 2 cherry shrimps and one snail (the lady said is strawberry snail)but i tried to find in the net..i couldnt find.....will take a photo of my snail for u guys to help me to identify....and the tank too..my tank is 18" x 8" x 8"

another question..the lady said i need to have bacteria to make the tank clean....can sifu sifu here explain to me??

currently i have blue tetra, black tetra, blue eyes tetra and another 2 orange color fish...forgot the name..

thanks thanks...

edited: can snail eat my java moss?? (sorry for all newbie question..learning learning)
*
java moss dun need high lighting or co2 also can survive... but their growth rate is much slower....

it is best to have some substrate below lor... substrate not jz provide nutrient for the plants, it adds to a more natural look of ur aquarium.... thumbup.gif

yea... bacteria can be grown in tank when the tank has been cycled for at least 1 week plus... but for new startups, it is good to add extra beneficial bacteria to promote growth.... bacteria converts ammonia (fish poo and uneaten fish food) into nitrite and nitrate, which is needed for ur plants...

oh my...i think it's late for me to cycle my tank for one week already....because i have fishes and snail around d....sad.gif

i didn know need to use certain sand....i went to the shop i ask the uncle i wan to plant tree sand...he showed me..which type..i just buy only...1 kg for rm2....i guess wrong sand d eh?

can i buy the bacteria from the fish shop and normally how much eh??

edited:add photo
*
u can still continue to cycle the tank even got fishes inside... jz dat it is not so good for the fishes coz water parameter still unstable... last time i tried put in guppies inside after cycling for a week... they straight jump out of water... lolz...

1kg for rm2 is not fert sand... i bought my ADA Amazonia II aquasoil for rm10/kg.... needed 3 or 4kg + some holland sand (like urs) for my 1.5ft tank... for those bacteria, can try use bacterball or bacter100...

QUOTE(playerseeker @ Feb 7 2009, 11:35 AM)
heya...yea...i just went and ask the shop...i didn buy tho....tat shop give slightly higher price...so going to survey awhile and see

btw...wat u mean by melting??meaning it's dying?? sad.gif  sad.gif

my 1st try on planted tank...face alot of difficulties...but i wont give up!!!!!!
*
yeap... melting means dying... could be water temperature too high or ph swing... u using internal filter??... dat could generate some heat which will raise the water temperature...

so any idea on how to make the plant grow with such setup a?? i dowan to buy new filter in meantime...just bought it last week....heheheh
*
honestly i not very sure... i'm also jz newbie in aquascaping...

from what i know la... try get some aquasoil or fert soil from local fish shop (LFS)... wads ur tank size ah??.. i can leave ur current sand at the bottom (or removing some since its quite high) and add about 1 inch of aquasoil...

add some beneficial bacteria as well such as bacterball (1biji rm4) or bacter100 (powerish form, not sure how much)...

as for filter, its best to get HOB (hang on back filter) lor... internal filter create heat could raise water temperature... da internal filter can leave it inside la, at night off photoperiod only switch on da filter to circulate the water (or create water ripple on top) so more oxygen can enter the water....

to make ur plants grow better, can introduce co2 as well... dont need to buy expensive pressurized tank lah... use diy yeast can adi.... make sure got co2 diffuser... normal airstone cannot diffuse the co2 into small tiny bubble.... cost of making 1 set, less than rm25 lah... most expensive is the diffuser, approx rm15....

ohya, ur lighting dun seem enough as well... how many watt is ur lamp??... if can add another one... smile.gif

for now should be reasonable to grow low lighting plants... low lighting doesnt require co2 supply, which also doesnt contribute to algae bloom... but everything grows at much slower pace lah...

my current setup... introduced 7 rasbora inside... very nice having them swimming mid and top level of the tank... but i jz noticed, my tetras nipped some of their fins... mad.gif mad.gif
