Hi everyone!! I'm new in Fat-Tailed gerbil here. notworthy.gif

rclxm9.gif rclxm9.gif rclxm9.gif Got my first Fat-Tailed Gerbil yesterday evening. rclxms.gif rclxms.gif rclxms.gif

We named him Echo. Dunno from where we thought about this name as Blurjoey wanna name him 'Whiskers' but it sound like a cat's name. Then wanna name him 'Bacon' but sound so delicious. Ended up he is named Echo now.

Some pics of Echo and his new home wub.gif Hope he will love his home and soon adapted well. wub.gif

Heheh... cute cute. Now you have a fat tail.

Go aquarium shop and get a nice piece of drift wood. My female sleeps on her drift wood while my male sleeps under the driftwood.
*
Ok Ok. Plan to get that for him also. He just hide and sleep inside the toilet roll. Do we need to give toilet for him like hamster? I put the bathing sand inside the tank, should be ok right? Thanks for the answers first notworthy.gif notworthy.gif notworthy.gif Really dunno what's the best for him yet...need lots of reading from now. flex.gif

The bathing sand is alright. Sometimes they would pee in the sand but rarely for me. They are not like hamsters loh. But no smell! I change my bedding like once in 3 weeks.... they love wood shavings so no choice, have to use wood shavings for them but really odourless and they pee very little compared to hamsters. Fat tails require more protein so need more mealworms and crickets. I saw your lil Echo yesterday, but then when you arrive, I had to leave liao.
*
Oic. I thought I'll see you too as you said you'll be there. I can feed him mealworms but Reanne he don't really like mealworms but crickets, but I'm afraid of it sweat.gif Don't know how to handle. I use forcep for mealworms, but crickets can't use forcep mah...how leh??? rclxub.gif

Ahhh...normally they like crickets better. You gotta try and catch them. Just use hand hahah... but forceps also ok lah. Just catch and put in the tank.

Your fat tail got a tail with fur... smooth fur.

My fat tail, according to Reanne, they are different line or subspecies... so mine have pink more naked tails LOL.
*
Naked tails??? That's interesting. Anyway, I love Echo's tail, I touch and play with it's tail and he have no response and just let me play, sooo...cute wub.gif wub.gif

I really no courage to catch those crickets by hand... Maybe can try with gloves on... sweat.gif sweat.gif sweat.gif Really scared of those insects.

Wonder Fat-Tailed can go gai gai with us? Hamters will get stress if travel, how about Echo? Can I bring him to go out to places like Ikano today?

Added on June 3, 2008, 12:43 amJust wonder, how come Echo eat so little? He seems do not eat.... I'm worried... how can I pump him to be bigger and fatter or he is already fully grow? Thanks for the answer in advance.

Can... but I think syrian won't be so happy with crickets LOL. Remember must gutload but use veggie and dogfood to gutload crickets.

You can give a few a day. 3 to 5 a day, depends on how many echo wants to eat. I only feed crickets twice or once a week since I never buy daily.
*
unsure.gif unsure.gif How can I keep the remaining crickets at home safely? I mean they won't be hopping here and there. sweat.gif

Of cos. Can't help cos I'm super scared with all the bugs, but for my babies good, have to feed also. I can see the way Echo eating the crickets compare with the way I feed him mealworms, he never touch the mealworms but hunting for the crickets. sweat.gif sweat.gif Eating happily in the small tank.

Have been feeding crickets for Echo everyday but he only took 2 1/2 crickets on the first day which is on Sunday and only 1 cricket today. Is that normal that they don't eat much even crickets? Or I fed him too much others food like veges and dry food? He only kill but not eat. sweat.gif sweat.gif sweat.gif

HI All,

I have tried to search about 1- pets shop list in the pet shop listing thread.
None of them have fat tailed gerbils...
do you know where else can I get one:(
*
Fat-tailed gerbil is rare in Malaysia. Saw it last time in Pet Safari Ikano, but now all gone already. They selling with a high price and they force you to take a pair. I think it won't be easy for you to get from pet shops. Maybe you can get from home breeder.

QUOTE(Reanne @ Jun 14 2008, 03:51 AM)
Bite you? That's strange.... Maybe your fingers smell yummy! jk

He and his sibling have rarely ever bitten, but I didn't give them a hidebox or anything like a cave for them to hide in. I gave them a T PVC pipe and lots of toilet rolls. I've never tried sticking my hands into their hiding spaces as I consider that their 'private' quarters. I usually tap the bedding or the top of the tank gently and they usually come out to investigate.

Then when they come out, I lay my palm out flat and they usually sniff a bit before jumping onto my hand. Don't try to grab him as he's not from the Algerian line. Better if he jumps on your hand on his own. You don't necessarily need to feed him crickets, some holistic garlic-free dog kibble added into his mix would be good. You can try going to the pet shop and ask for some sample packs.

The next best food for any rodent would be lab blocks, when I brought in Prolab lab blocks and used it for my rodents back then, it gave me such wonderful results. Big, healthy, chunky hamsters and gerbils, but it's very difficult to always bring in as it's expensive and need to get it from Singapore on your own. Not to mention the short shelf-life and demanding storage methods.
*
What is lab blocks? Only can get from Singapore by self? Any other way we can get that?

QUOTE(Reanne @ Jun 14 2008, 01:48 PM)
Quite difficult. I can order but they won't send to KL. Now with the petrol prices and I think the price for the lab blocks have gone up. RM250+ for a 50lbs bag. That's for bulk purchase, 25lbs packed into smaller 5lbs bags are available at the same price, but buying the 50lbs bag is more cost effective.

Storage can't last more than 6 months from manufacture date and should be kept in a freezer to preserve the freshness.

All the hamster/gerbil feeds we get are actually 'pet' quality, lab blocks are processed for lab animals that need to be kept in optimum health and given optimum nutrition, so it's 'lab' quality, which is far better and far higher quality. 2 good brands of lab blocks are Purina Mill's Prolab and Harlan Teklad.

http://www.geocities.com/calhamassoc/QandA.html

Linda Price feeds her hams lab blocks as part of their diet. Lab blocks can be fed on it's own but some owners prefer giving variety. When I kept my syrians and gerbils solely on lab blocks, the results became more prominent.

The model I brought in was RMH2000. RMH stands for Rat/Mouse/Hamster

Thanks Reanne for the detail info. I think I will definitely get it when I visit Singapore. rclxm9.gif rclxm9.gif rclxm9.gif Hope my trip will be soon... nod.gif

Just wanna know, is it possible for me to house a Duprasi in a Zoo Zone 2? Will they be able to destroy the whole thing? I mean does is last? Or shud i just stick with the Toyogo Box [150 litres, 30in x 20in x 17in H]? Thanks ya.. Wanna plan well b4 getting one..
*
They are good chewing master. ZooZone2 have too many edges for them to chew. I house mine in the 2ft Gappy fish tank as it's transparent and we can see him clearly from outside and it's bigger as well. I think plastic fish tank can last longer than other tank as when they trying to dig at the corner and cause scratches at all the corners sweat.gif

Sangels : Do Duprasi have enuf space if using 2feet tank r?? N we need to drill a hole isit? Do they like the coconut shell?? Coz i think gona take a Gerbil Starter Kit from Petshack la.. hehe thanks again ya..
*
Should be enough for one Duprasi. For my boy Echo, he not too active like hamster like to run around, he will just hide in his 'house' or under the drift wood. You do need to drill a hole for the water bottle. Coconut shell? I'm not sure they'll like it or not cos I didn't put, I prefer drift wood as they can climb on and make a cave for himself to hide.

QUOTE(anderyna @ Aug 28 2008, 11:13 PM)
they will bite if they see holes.. haha..
*
The hole is not for the fella to bite, it is for the water bottle. Duprasi is not as bad as Mongolian Gerbil. I usually put toilet rolls for him to chew, or mineral stones.

The wheels are not for the Duprasi la, or else he will chew my RM60+ away. sweat.gif That's the old pic of the arrangement as my TV rack is having a TV on it already. Need to re-arrange all the tanks with new tables too after we got our new Syrian hamsters this weekend. rclxm9.gif But the tidiness credit goes to Blurjoey rclxms.gif

Hahaha... I don't like to hang the bottle with wire as it look unstable and swinging, also I feel it's not easy for the small fella to drink. If hang it low also worried the small fella with climb and get away or bite the wire sweat.gif sweat.gif sweat.gif Maybe I worried too much.... So go for the hole and suction cap as Pet Shack did it nicely for me thumbup.gif
