Just to clarify some issues regarding gearbox oil
Currently using Persona Elegance - old model (4 speed auto)
The manual book says to change gearbox oil at 40,000 km
But I got a few friends during discussion would advise me to change the gearbox oil at 20,000km regardless of the manual book says
Anyone here can clarify actually when we should actually replace our ATF or gearbox oil?

changing the oil every 2nd engine oil change interval is good and safe enough

I used to follow my mechanic recommendation of 20,000 km ATF change though factory recommends 40,000 km in Avanza 1.3L .
With Blotter spot test,I stretched it to 27,500 km and it works normally.
Finally changed it out to coincide with engine oil change.
Next change would probably upwards of 27,500 km.

Change earlier because the weather here very hot and humid. Heat will kill AT prematurely.

There is a dip stick for the gearbox oil on most cars. If you can't find it, refer to the manual. Pull it out and wipe it on a tissue or kitchen paper. It should be pink. If it is, check it again in a few months. If it's brown, you need to change it. If it's black, you might have a problem.

160,000km under normal driving conditions. Here in Malaysia, hot & humid, dusty, frequent stop-go, hence deemed Severe Service. Take 1 quarter from the normal service interval, 160k/4 = 40k , are we safe ?

Take 1 quarter from the normal service interval, 160k/4 = 40k , are we safe ? I would say other than temperature, the fluid type seems playing a major role too.take example dexron 3 seems able to last longer in terms of smell, and color. In the other hand SP fluid which works better with lock up clutch seems to change color more easily. I believe this suggest that dexron 3 is much more resistant to heat and oxidization.

The color could remain and looks clear (not murky), but the oil quality degraded.

I'd like to advise all drivers, Gearbox is as important as engine but its fluid change interval is 2x-4x longer, please use better atf.
