Hey guys, i'm looking to build a microphone from scratch for using while talking on discord/skype etc. Because well those microphones found on the market kinda sucks unless you go for condensor mic level. I once had mic called Zalman MC-1 and that was perfect. Any ideas where I can get those "microphones" as in the receiver inside? A good one? Don't know if 3.5mm jacks have enough power to power dynamic microphones, so looking for small ones but good ones.

I think you need phantom power for active mics. Not easy, not cheap. Might as well get a web cam with built in mics. Logitech has very good reviews.

but the prices hit RM200 easily so kinda looking to try a DIY route for the experience as well, the cheapo mics pick up too much things like blowing fan sounds especially. Even those expensive gaming headphones, where they skimp on mic quality.

RM200 for a good mic, seriously?

dood good mics start at 500 bucks and we call that cheap

mic picking up things is not a bad mic, actually good mics pick up shit, its how you use the mic

so maybe you should try and find out if your setup is done badly?

ahem RM200 for webcams please read it again. And i'm not asking for professional level microphones, I'm looking for a microphone receiver which is the same level as the Zalman MC-1 which only costed me RM80+ (and yes it's good enough for what I'm using it for, hence its a good mic eventhough its below rm200 haven't found any other mic that small that beats it at that price point)

I already stated from the beginning that I wanted a mic for skype, did I say I wanted a professional microphone? What setup are you expecting a normal user to have? A sound booth, isolation box? Just want something to attach to my headphone or clip onto my shirt. I'm already an AT2020 user, but I need a portable mic for my laptop which doesn't pick up keyboard clacks from halfway across my office.

you didnt even mention webcams, just said it was for skype and no one is talking about pro-level mics. those can go up to a few k, I'm just saying a good respectable mic, which can easily hover around 500 bucks.

needing a mic for Skype says nothing, a lot of people use Blue Yeti's, Razers for those things because of the mono-directional and plenty of other features (which eliminates your fan noise problem)

so I'm not asking you to buy an interface, plug it into a e906 with a pop filter. im talking about your general setup, is your cable monophonic? is your mic mono-directional? is the gain on your computer for mic too high? does your mic have enough juice, etc etc.

a lot of mics below RM200 tend to have the above problems, not enough preamp juice (so people pump up the gain), not mono-directional and microphonic cables.

so if you think that Zalman is good enough, why not get the same thing?

The RM200 was a reply to the previous guy who answered me. Blue yeti, Samson, Behringer, those are usually sought after by podcasters and streamers and I understand that they are of good quality, and I understand that they are the better choices out there no doubt. My current setup is just a headphone mic from a steel siberia headset. No cable microphonics, it's just picking up too much ambient noises since it's omni-directional.

The Zalman is good, but I want to take this chance to get some experience DIY-ing up one myself. Basically doing it for the sake of learning while also hopefully building a mic i'm satisfied with.
