0.53mbps for upload speed was a way too low for the current era! I'm pretty sure will stuck with this for another 5 years unless I moved to city centre which seems impossible now.

At least the upload speed can be considered quite OK for the today standard.

I realized who I am, village people who are considered as low cost area (miskin papa kedana) by TM, so Unifi Lite via VDSL will be my only viable option to enjoy 'high speed' broadband via wired. Anyway, not all people are lucky like you and most of the user in this thread who can enjoy high speed broadband via fibre.

Fibre in my area only limited to the nearest street cabinet which in my case, situated around 600M from my taman (read as village).

Not all people in kampung would be applicable for those rm88 packages. It will be based on monthly household income not more than 3k if i'm not mistaken.

If i'm not mistaken, the installer can only charge for phone wiring., not related to streamyx at all. I only paid them rm65 last time for over the ceiling+casing+phone jack plate and socket. That's rewiring from the usual connection in the living room to the upstairs at the 'server' room. if using existing wiring provided by the developer at the living room, the charges for installation should be around rm25 something only. I'm not sure because it was a long time ago, sometime around 2011. Maybe nowadays they already increase the installation charges, but it shouldn't more than rm200 like what your father's neighbour are 'obliged' to pay

fiber or vdsl?

If I'm not mistaken, ADSL2+ (current modulation for Streamyx nowadays) should be able to support up to 24Mbps download. Even my current Streamyx 8mb are capped at 10Mbps download speed. The only downside will be upload speed which max at 1Mbps (ADSL2+ Annex A). All this will be subject to distance.
What Unifi Lite via copper line does, they change the card at the DSLAM from ADSL2+ to VDSL2 to support that 5mbps upload speed.

Depends. Recent chat with tm appointed contractor said it don't simply mean if the VC cabinet is available at your area than unifi lite will be available. Yes, the cabinet is there but most of the VC cabinet now is still in the vegetative state. Lots of work need to be done especially to 'tarik' the existing wiring from the old distribution cabinet to the new VC Msan.

Depends on area. Some area are classifed under SUBB (Sub Urban Broadband) with newer VDSL MSAN (VB and VC coded cabinet) installed, they you're way to go to install Unifi Lite (Subject to distance from house to the cabinet, not more than 1.5KM). Unfortunately, my area are classified under SUBB, but the cabinet at the front of my taman aren't included under SUBB project, thus for the time being, Streamyx is the only way to access the wired broadband here.

Do look this kind of cabinet, if it's available, then chances you'll be having Unifi Lite soon. Or maybe already activated.

VF I'm not sure. But VB and VC, confirm can support Unifi lite. Same like me, I was connected to BS F011 and BS V0011 cabinet which support max 8mb only (Max configured port 10241Kbps to overcome the overhead of ADSL). The average distance between me and the new VC Cabinet less than 1KM... Haihh.. guess it's not our luck. The situation in my area, they only upgrade those kawasan that before this can only support max 1Mbps. They're connected directly to exchange without any cabinet in between.

Is that your street cabinet was coded as VC or VB, right? But it's weird because you stayed at Kuantan, is that supposed to be fiber to the home area because Kuantan is state capital of Pahang.

Your statement about Ipoh is right. Unifi coverage doesn't extend to the whole area of Ipoh, yet. But you're still lucky because can get much better price to performance ratio broadband service than mine. I asked TM last week via their help mail, they said my area wasn't included in the 2016-2017 SUBB project. Instead, they will only start to upgrade the facilities at my area somewhere around early 2019 and will complete in the end of 2019 "Jika tiada halangan luar biasa yang berlaku". 2019.... still a long way to go. But I hope what TM said in the email will be true, my taman will be served under fiber to the home.
