Hey so i bought a MSI GL62 6QE laptop and here are some of the specs:
intel i5-6300hq
Gtx950m 2gb gddr5
1tb hdd
4gb ddr4 ram (hyundai electronics)

So theres a youtuber been doing gaming benchmarks and he has the exact same spec as mine except he got a 8gb ram and the benchmark he did was very decent.. so im wondering if i shud upgrade my ram from 4gb to 8gb, and is there anything i shud know before upgrading the ram ? Lastly, does ram really affects gaming performance based on the situation above?

P/s * i dont have much knowledge abt "these" stuff so any tips wud be very helpful ty!

RAM will affect anything you do if :
1) There's no more space within to store data : Bigger Capacity helps
2) There is a lot of access to RAM : Faster Speed helps

Gaming laptop usually comes with 2 RAM slots, and usually for budget models, only 1 slot is in use. So, add one more RAM stick over there as upgrade. To ensure better compatibility, use same speed RAM. 1333MHz with 1333MHz. 1600MHz with 1600MHz.

See here: https://www.howtogeek.com/245245/how-much-r...d-for-pc-games/

See here too: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/does-more-r...ng-performance/

Hope that helps. Generally, 8GB minimum for modern games. However, if you just bought your MSI, keep in mind that opening the laptop for access to RAM will void your warranty if it's not done by the official MSI service centre. Just thought I would let you know if anything goes wrong. There should be a sticker at the bottom of your laptop that states warranty void if opened.

Tumpang this thread to ask a question along the same topic on RAM upgrades.
Understand that there's a rule on using same speed RAM, is there a rule on using same size RAMs? e.g. both must be 8GB, or can one be 8 GB, the other 16 GB?
Thanks! notworthy.gif

Both ram need to be identical in term of size and speed to utilize the extra benefit of dual channel performance

It should be okay to pair 2GB 1333MHz with 4GB 1333MHz RAM.

I believe Jasonix is right.
I read somewhere (apparently after the post), technically if the RAM does work together they will run in Flex mode - meaning 2GB from each stick will run in dual channel mode and the odd 2GB on the 4GB stick will operate in single channel mode. Although there is no compatibility issues, mixing different sizes of RAM bars makes the CPU cycle asymmetric, which can cause delay in CPU's data fetching that could become a bottleneck.

Hence, best is to stick to the Same Size, same Speed, Same CAS Latency... generally speaking get a kit set of the exact same RAM.

Correct, the best result would be from a kit RAM. But laptop kit RAMs are pretty expensive, so I really couldn't recommend it. Unless it can be found at almost similar price to regular RAM, I suggest to stick with regular RAM for laptop.
