ISSUES concerning the halal status of food often trigger heated debates amongst netizens, especially when such information is disseminated without prior research, and this time, the Magnum brand is no exception of being wrongfully accused.

Speculations surrounding Magnum’s halal status has made it rounds on social media recently, whereby the brand produced by the popular Indian desert company, Kwality Wall’s and distributed in Thailand is rumoured to contain non-halal ingredients.

A circulated image reveals the Magnum Classic ice cream coded as E471 is said to contain pork in its ingredients.

Kwality Wall’s is the leading manufacturer and distributor of food and beverage products – such as ice cream – in several countries including India, Brunei, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Malaysia.

However, a check shows that the status was uploaded to social media in 2014, and Magnum had previously denied that their products contained any traces of pork.

“A few days ago, there were some incorrect and misleading claims that the Magnum ice cream contains E471, which is derived from animal fats, and therefore not vegetarian-friendly.

“We’d like to clarify that this is totally incorrect and is without any factual basis. Magnum ice cream uses a standard emulsifier that’s classified as E471 under the Indian Food law,” as statement from the producer read.

Magnum ice cream is available in four different flavours in India, which is Classic, Truffles, Almond and Brownie, with the producers explaining on its ‘Frequently Asked Question’ page that Magnum ice cream is a 100 per cent pure Vegetarian product.

To allay fears amongst Muslim consumers in Malaysia, Malaysian Digest contacted the Halal Hub Division at the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) to put the speculations to rest.

A Halal Hub division spokesman clarified that the Magnum ice cream has a Halal Certificate of Foreign Affairs of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) and the Central Islamic Committee of Thailand (CICOT) and it is recognised by JAKIM.

“JAKIM has made prior clarification, stating that the ice cream does not contain non-halal ingredients. The public is advised to purchase ice cream products with a Malaysian halal logo or any halal logo recognised by JAKIM,” the spokesperson said today.

In addition, the spokesperson also added that JAKIM is well aware of the false information fast-spreading online and has previously addressed the confusion concerning ‘E’ Code – which is often associated with illicit substance with E471.

According to the Director General (DG) of JAKIM Datuk Othamn Mustapha, ‘E’ Code is the code for admixtures (additives) and are commonly used on food labels in the European Union to indicate permitted additives, as reported by Bernama.

E471, or scientifically called as mono and diglyceride emulsifier, is synthetic fat derived from glycerol and natural fatty acids found in plants such as oil palm or animal fat which is similar to natural fat from various edible substances.
