PS3 will hook up with Foldings@home to breakdown proteins and save the world from genetic mutations and other such anamolies!!!

Who cares about those crap PS3 games!!! You'll get a real-time 3D visual of the protein molecule to oogle at 24/7!!!

"PS3 is able "to achieve performance previously only possible on supercomputers," with each computer likely "able to attain performance on the 100 gigaflop scale."

Look!!! Free marketing!!!! brows.gif

Hmmmm I thought they are cutting cost and now gonna push for a lower spec chip ? Instead of dedicated cell chip for vid and processor they are gonna drop 1 and emulate the other. thats what I heard la... dont quote me on it.

They are dropping PS2 hardware backward compatibility and software emulating it in the newer consoles. It's like getting rid of the best part of the PS3 laugh.gif

Anyway that has nothing to do with this thread at all.

contributing computer power from protein folding prediction analysis.... apparently cell architecture excels in that with multiple RISC processors.

Biology leasons..Genetic mutation occurs at the DNA level, which can bring about a change in amino-acid in proteins or the artificial termination of proteins. The change in amino acid in turns change protein properties or folding from normal proteins. This protein change could cause change in cell structure as in the case of sickle cell anemia, or making the cell divide uncontroled in the case of cancer if the protein involved in cell pathway controlling mechanisms.

so it wont be working in the background while you play games?
the user has to personally enable the client, then only it will start?
i thought it would be working in the background while you play games...
like this i doubt many people would want to leave their ps3 on just to fold...

from what i heard last time is that you leave your PS3 console on standby mode when your not using it and ur internet connection on ... then the PS3 will automatically connect to the server ... and also i think this only helps if ur in the US coz msia connection is like super turbo speed if u know what i mean

juz wat i read last time

laugh.gif yeah,i know what you mean..
but i doubt folding takes up alot of bandwidth..
we can play online games good enough,im sure folding takes less effort than that.. smile.gif

Yup. This sort of number crunching and stream computing is about ideal for Cell, which is why it makes such a good folder.
Too bad the same thing can't be said about game code.

BeastX already answered. smile.gif

And redbull provide a nice pic of the thing in action.

What's this thread about???...ermmm...it's about PS3 being finally useful....Because it wasn't very useful as a game console to begin with... laugh.gif
