QUOTE(Rossie @ Jun 11 2007, 01:55 PM)
Here's a way:
Sand of the finish of your neck, and use the finest grade of steel wool to "shave off" the gunk you were saying. Because maple have a tendency to turn black in some areas that are expose. Something like the picture below rclxms.gif
After sanding of the finish, apply the gunstock wax and let it dry, then repeat the process until your happy with the number of coats. IIRC, EBMM has 5~8 layers of max on it (can't really recall the exact number).
The plus of using max is it's really really smooth! And the feel is just godly.
Some like to use tung oil too, you could always try that. EBMM switched from oiled finished necks to waxed finished necks though.

I told you what headphones before already what bruce.gif
For me, my SONY flat response headphones never failed me for around 8 years.

aiks... sounds quite complicated. never got the hang of woodworking, even in the Kemahiran Hidup days (I better not hear any smart-alec comments from you, Val1234! tongue.gif)...

ermm.. finest grade = 0000? I tried looking for it in ACE Hardware but the finest they got was 000... and it was from Europe or something, cost about 40bucks or so... rclxub.gif

hmmm... maybe I should just send it to Tham and ask if he can do, hehe...

actually 2000 grit sandpaper should be able to do it.
just make sure to wet it first.
*
why wet it first? err... won't the moisture like seep into the neck and screw it up? ...sorry lah, my wood knowledge quite hopeless... hehe... whistling.gif

wats that thing before the headstock? is it a mod? im referring to ROssies pic
*
it's an inertial dampener so that when you start breaching the 666nps barrier, the neck won't crack and you won't rip open a gateway to the Nine Hells... whistling.gif

Oh yeah, Everdying, thanks for the info... thumbup.gif

Don't think it's THAT complicated, it's not rocket science, c'mon, it's just a pieace of wood!
1. Take out the neck2. sand it down
3. apply finish till satisfied
*
Wei... and here I though the sanding and waxing was gonna be difficult to do and now you say I gotta take the neck out??? shocking.gif

...yikes... scratch that... I'll live with the gunk, thank you very much.... tongue.gif

QUOTE(Rossie @ Jun 11 2007, 03:43 PM)
The string dampener is kinda shouting out loud:
"HEY! I CAN'T PLAY CLEANLY, SO I NEED A DAMPENER TO HELP ME! I SUCK!"
thumbup.gif

hehe... since it's silverisle who's playing in that pic, are you trying to imply something? hmm.gif whistling.gif whistling.gif

*sorry... I bit pissed off... missed out one of the easiest question in my exam.
*
Question:

How does the MAB string dampener affect the tone of a guitar?

a. It doesn't affect the tone at all.
b. It helps you play cleaner so you sound better.
c. It infuses the guitar with the spirit of MAB.
c. More mass at the headstock = more sustain/tone

Covariance₁ ₂ = E{[R₁-E(R₁)][R₂-E(R₂)]}/ divisor
Correlation Coefficient₁ ₂= Covariance₁ ₂/(sigma₁*sigma₂)
Why the hell did I missed out the freaking divisor!!!!!!!!!!!
*
Maybe because you forgot to lift the dampener? smile.gif

...hehe... I don't understand the question at all! Looks like a bunch of square boxes and brackets having a field day! hmm.gif biggrin.gif

Hmmm....

maybe you should have solved it like this:
Covariance₁ ₂ = E{[R₁-E(R₁)][R₂-E(R₂)]}/ divisor x FTW
Correlation Coefficient₁ ₂= Covariance₁ ₂/(sigma₁*sigma₂) = 7-strings ROXXORS FTW whistling.gif whistling.gif

Sigh....... I hope I get paid after my internship.... probably not.....
If I DO..... looks like it goes into my 24-fret Ibanez fund!

And sorry to dissapoint all you 7-stringers out there...... but 24-fret is a higher priority then a 7 string tongue.gif
*
you shall be condemned to purgatory for your lack of faith in the 7th string! mad.gif

whistling.gif whistling.gif

...hehe, why don't you get a 24-fret 7-string? kill 2 birds with one stone! thumbup.gif

i know what he meant. just curious, is bentley that bad at it? i thought a shop so big should have good profesional staff.

Supposedly, the no. 1 refret job in town is done by Abang Gigi (Sp?), somewhere in Ampang I think. No. 2 is Tham at Jalan Gasing.

I've sent a guitar to Tham for refretting and the job was top-notched. He's also done fret levelling for my other guitar... generally, his workmanship is really really good and the prices are reasonable. thumbup.gif

But sometimes he's really busy, so you may need to "book" a slot in advance... rclxms.gif

Refretting is no joke... if the tech is inexperienced or rushes through the job, he can seriously screw up your neck!

yeah..last time it was RM80 for setup and RM150 for redress

now its RM100 for setup , RM200 for redress

vulcan x just redress 2 guitars ..tham gave discount lar..RM380 for both lol  biggrin.gif

but i think its pretty standard , Simon , John , Edwards all..not to say their price are wayyy cheaper than Tham ...plus..now the new fly over near UM ...

less Jam lar..last time i used to hate going to Tham's place , especially going home time , have to pass by the Sultan Abdul Samad school road ...jam like hell..
*
haha... you're right actually. When I sent my RG7 to Tham for setup, cost me RM200!

But I'm not complaining coz it plays like a dream now... icon_rolleyes.gif

QUOTE(SweetTooth @ Jun 26 2007, 05:15 PM)
i've been wanting to play a few hard solos(at least for my standards) like cob - everytime i die, trivium - gunshot to the head of trepidation etc
but i always thought that it's still to early to learn something that hard so i'm wondering, should i be tackling the solos slowly, part by part or should i wait till i get better ?
some people say practing things which are too hard(like sweep picking) when you're too far away from it is actually bad, so..
*
There's nothing inherently wrong with trying to learn something which is waaay beyond your current ability, so long as you approach it slowly, diligently and with the right approach.

If you're trying to learn solos which are difficult, try to first focus on practising the parts which you have the most difficulty with... like if it involves some really bullsh!t psycho ub3r-1337 arpeggios or 666nps runs, try focusing on the techniques involved first... icon_rolleyes.gif

EDIT: ....but don't take my word for it... I hate learning solos because invariably there'll be at the very least one or two parts which involve techniques I'm weak in, and I'm too impatient to learn... hehe... whistling.gif
