reference to the letter entitled “So near yet so far for MRT” (The Star, April 17) by A.S.
First and foremost, we wish to thank the writer for giving the MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang (SBK) Line a try and for sharing his or her feedback from that experience.
We would like to address some of the issues which were raised by the writer, especially with regard to the first and last mile connectivity and the MRT alignment which had unfortunately resulted in the writer having a longer door-to-door journey time when compared to him or her driving.
We are glad that the writer has pointed out that if a pedestrian bridge was built over the LDP to link the Bandar Utama MRT Station with Taman Tun Dr Ismail where the writer lives would have made it more convenient for residents to access the station.
MRT Corp did plan to construct a pedestrian walkway over the LDP from the station to Taman Tun Dr Ismail. Unfortunately, this plan was strongly objected to by some residents of Taman Tun Dr Ismail as well as the residents’ association. A petition and a survey supported the objection.
The end result is the situation today where all residents of Taman Tun Dr Ismail who wish to use the MRT have to either drive or use a feeder bus to reach an MRT station. Had a pedestrian bridge been built, some of the residents could have accessed the station just by walking, significantly reducing the overall door-to-door journey time.
On the writer’s suggestion that the MRT should have served Universiti Malaya, we are glad to inform that one of the alignment options being closely looked at in the feasibility study for the future MRT 3 alignment will serve the university.😱😱😱😅😅
We expect the feasibility study for MRT 3 which is envisioned to be a circle line, that would integrate with most if not all of the other urban rail services in the Klang Valley, would be completed in the next quarter.👍👍😱😱😅😅😅
We hope the writer can appreciate that it would be impossible for just one MRT Line to enable everyone to reach their destinations. The only way for the travel needs of more people to be catered to is by increasing the coverage or the urban rail network with more new LRT, MRT and commuter train lines which are supported by an efficient bus network, and with all these services integrating seamlessly with each other.
This is already being implemented by the Government with the construction or planning of more urban rail lines such as the MRT Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya Line, LRT 3 and MRT 3.
As for the writer’s comments on the feeder bus route, MRT Corp and Prasarana Malaysia Bhd, which operates the SBK Line, are currently monitoring the routing of the service. Feeder buses are meant to serve residential areas within a 5km radius of a station and the routes are designed in such a way as to serve a particular area as comprehensively as possible.
As the SBK Line is not yet completely open, it is currently very difficult to gauge the full extent of the demand of the feeder bus service. Once the SBK Line is completely operational by the end of July this year, Prasarana would then be able to make the necessary adjustments to the routes and schedules to match supply with demand.
We hope our explanations above adequately address the issues raised by the writer.
We agree completely with the writer that as an investment running into the billions of ringgit that is funded by the taxpayer, the Klang Valley MRT Project cannot afford any error, whether at the design stage right or when it is operational. A lot of thought went into the project to ensure that the resulting MRT network is going to be used by commuters.
We hope that as urban rail coverage in the Klang Valley grows with new lines being constructed, commuters such as the writer would find their travelling requirements adequately catered for. This would ultimately enable them to leave their cars at home or at a rail station nearest to their homes, and enjoy a quick, stress-free and safe journey to their destinations.
