Hi fellow forumers,
I just entered into the world of DSLRs.
Trying to learn and gain experience in DSLR shooting.
Since i'm just a begineer, i think a D40 would be a good start for me.

Here is the current setup im using:
Nikon D40
Kit lens 18-55mm
AF-S 70-300mm VR f4.5-5.6
Lowepro Off Trail 2

All C&C are most welcome:)

Hey! nice play on angles and stuff =P

but i think u overexposed a lil. Seem to be blowing some highlights. The greens seem to be dullish. U have a full RGB histogram, use it. make sure u dun blow any of the channels. I think only la, cos the colors dun look as vivid as it should.

Try underexposing -2/3 stops or more. try shooting many exposures on 1 subject then u'll slowly learn which is the best for different settings.

Happy shooting and great choice there. =P

Tell me if u want examples. =}

yes bro, i'm more of a macro shooter... but i'm considering tele lens first.. then only macro. thinking of 18-200mm VR or 70-300mm VR
macro lens would be 105mm VR f2.8
or any other suggestions? since D40 only compatible wit AF-S and HSM lens

yea.. 70-300mm VR AF-S would be quite fun to shoot and snipe from the 10th floor...
this kit lens only allow me to shoot from 1st floor... sien!!!
but i'm thinking of the upcoming 55-200mm VR its bout half the price of the 70-300mm.
tele lens still can perform close ups and macro shootings... if i get macro lens first... can;t shoot milf ady.. sad.gif

well, to answer u, u have to be at the right time and at the right place.
i stay just by the beach at melaka. was sitting outside the balcony and enjoying the cool breeze when i saw lotsa lightning stirking out in the open sea. so i tried to take my cam, set to 30sec exposure time and just hope the lightning hit the place u shoot lo... smile.gif

dude, all depends on you dude. Coz the 18-200 is a more all in 1 lens only thing is that you gotta have good lighting else the shot wont be as good. So far the 70-300 mm is great but its not fast enough to me. But never the less the bokah for this lens is great. =))) Its great from 70-250mm at the far end its just too much movement.

The VR really helps when taking shots. I bought my lens from Amcorp Mall PJ. As for the price its RM1850.00 Its not the cheapest but I find the seller honest.

Hope this helps..

p/s: at 70mm you need a distance of 6 feet to take pic.

hi, thanks for the feedback... i think it really boosted my confidence to purchase a 70-300mm compared to 18-200. wah, if follwoing wat u said at 70mm you need a distance of 6 feet to take pic, i would seriously want to consider a macro lens also...
but the new 55-200 VR is coming out quite cheap also... (below rm1k)
i won;t mind paying 70-300mm VR for rm1800below. maybe u can help scout for me the 70-300 & 55-200. i'm based in JB ler... all camera shops cutting my throat.
thanks smile.gif

add close up filter = sacrifice sharpness

add extension tube. sharpness remains from a prime lense.

well, just prepare yourself much earlier before the sun really sets, for my location, the sun down happens aroun 655pm - 715pm just be there 10-15mins earlier to hav some "warm-up" shots before getting the rite settings and compo. then once u see the sun is almost dipping, start shooting as much as u can, coz the movement is very fast... will only last you the most about 5mins before the sun is entirely dipped and sunked to the clouds... for every portrait shot, shoot a landscape shot as well smile.gif of yea, and dun forget to use spot metering. cheers! happy shooting smile.gif

yes... polar bears are still there. i got only 2 shots for polar bears, coz the aquarium glass was dirty, and the open air stage was badly lighted. not a stunning shot i got from them sad.gif
i have not been to KL zoo yet. but i plan to try melaka zoo. the tigers in sg zoo totally suck. they had genetic disorder, so they turned out to be white in color "albino tigers". nothing spectacular bout them. i will try and see if there are more animals to be posted up. still owe u all penguins sweat.gif

its like trying to make a kancil into an F1 for my machines
and somemore company blocked flickr and LYN forum... so i'm quite silent during the day sad.gif
under exposed pic, i think due to my notebook running on batt or the penguins were indoor and also i was shooting through the thick blurry glass. not sure which are the factors contributing unsure.gif

nice timing, nice angle. where you put the water in? a transparent cup? maybe you should try to shoot at more angles so that you will have more variety of erm..."impact"...not sure if it is the correct word...on the people who looks at the picture.

we have to think of what kind of effect we wanted, then only we try and try.. regarding to capturing the moment, a camera with high burst mode, or fast shutter speed is essential, but necessarily compulsory.. i'm afraid these option are only available on a dSLR cameras... hmm.gif

nice timing, nice angle. where you put the water in? a transparent cup? maybe you should try to shoot at more angles so that you will have more variety of erm..."impact"...not sure if it is the correct word...on the people who looks at the picture.
*
yea, i put the water in a cup only... yes, i've tried many angles too... and so far these were the ones turning up good smile.gif
maybe the substitute word for impact can be SPLAT??? just my two sense whistling.gif whistling.gif

Some Q&A feedback

1. Take pics only on bright days?
I prefer to take outdoor pics where natural light is most present.
For indoor shots, u need to increase ur ISO, or be steady for shots running at lower ISO

2. adjust white balance?
Most of my white balance i set it to Cloudy / Direct Sunlight (since most of my shootings are outdoor) i've always like my pics to have the "warm" tone, and therefore the white balance setting has the rite temperature to suit my taste.

3. use auto or P mode?
i'm shooting at A mode... aperture priority 95% of the time

add-on tips:
do try to make use of your AE-lock
change ur metering mode from matrix to center weighted / spot to get the colors rite
use photoshop to post process ur pics, play aroudn with the levels, curves, contrast & color balance.

thats all for now... icon_rolleyes.gif icon_rolleyes.gif happy shooting thumbup.gif

spot metering works very well if ur taking sunsets, of something which has a bright background and you want the front subject to look brighter, use spot meter. spot meter on the subject by pressing the AE/AL lock. but make sure u get ur settings rite in the main menu... i suggest using center weighted metering... hope it works for u smile.gif

I shall go with a simple rule of thumb:
Generally, what can be seen from public view can be photographed without legal repercussions. Photographs taken in private places require consent.

I'm shooting at a public swimming pool and not someone's private home's pool

Some quote from Photographer's Rights...

"Members of the public have a very
limited scope of privacy rights when
they are in public places. Basically,
anyone can be photographed without
their consent except when they have
secluded themselves in places where
they have a reasonable expectation of
privacy such as dressing rooms, rest-
rooms, medical facilities, and inside
their homes."

"Sometimes agents acting for entities
such as owners of industrial plants
and shopping malls may ask you to
hand over your film. Absent a court
order, private parties have no right to
confiscate your film. "

Hope it clears all your doubts... icon_rolleyes.gif & notworthy.gif

Yes, legally you're not invading their privacy. Ethically, do you think you're ok with it? They might just want to relax and yet their pictures are snapped and posted all over the internet for ppl to see in their glory.

What if someone shoot you and post it all over the internet? Some forumers here also dont like the way you post your MILF and swimming pool pics.

Yeah, and I also go with a simple rule of thumb: it's plain creepy dude.

The manner of shooting people from afar with a telephoto lens (presumably without their knowledge, we won't know for sure, as long as you avoid the question). And then posting them up with the objectifying commentary "wash wash eyes a little".

Just as you wish to exercise your (dubious) right to take and publish such photos, I can choose to exercise my right to remove your posts. I won't though, at least not for now. I'll let you reflect and think about what nairud and I have said, for a photo doesn't just portray a scene; it can portray the person behind the camera too.

there is nothing creepy unless u have a really shallow mind. these are just pure people shots on candid. anyway, this will be the last series of such in my thread since you people are objecting such shootings. i'm just dissapointed, deprived and discourage from top management replies.

well, most shop wont know this filter. i guess its an old school typo filter used for films
managed to get it in JB lesuire mall, they having a stock clearance of only rm10/filter various typo filters & sizes. the last time i was there, they still selling... but i think the 52mm i took ady... still have other sizes.

d80 is like d40x...
d70s is almost like d200... 1002-RGB pixels sensor & faster flash sync 1/500 & 1/8000 shutter speed. d80 no where close to these specs.
only downsite is the LCD screen 2"... sad.gif

d70s has superior fast flash sync 1/500, 1002pixels RGB sensor, only rm2.4k (very economical)
d80 dont have, only 420 RGB pixel sensor, flash sync only 1/2xx, same body build like d70s

extra features, 10.2mpix, can attach batt grip

i just dunno y i dun feel the d80 is so superior.. .although it has the same sensor chip as d200. that the only exciting thing... but that is bcoz its at 10.2mpx

d80 is 3.3k
extra features, 10.2mpix, can attach batt grip

i just dunno y i dun feel the d80 is so superior.. .although it has the same sensor chip as d200. that the only exciting thing... but that is bcoz its at 10.2mpx
*
do u use the flash sync that often? the d200/d80 has a better awb(ask shinchan) over the d70s. d70s is also pretty bad with reds(personal histoary..might b skill) no batt grip. way BIGGER viewfinder on the d80/d200.. i would get either one for this and the awb. noise is only usable at 800, nothing more. more mp give you room for cropping. so tell me how again that the d70s is like the d200 beside the 2 hardly used functions?

which lense do you have in mid until you need to change the body?
D40 color is good, the awb is good too

jumping to D70s wont be considered as an upgrade coz many cons to offset the pros
except for your need - the AF motor

welcome to D80 family, i advise you to get 17-50 f/2.8 instead of 28-75 f/2.8 since u already have a good tele-zoom lens.

speaking of tele-zoom lens, how do you personally think your 70-300mm VR perform? I got D40xkit + 70-300mm coming this week but not sure whether i should get a 18-200mm instead.

With 18-200mm perhaps i will no longer use the kitlens which is the main reason i choose 70-300mm, and maybe buy another 18-135mm and get rid of kitlens (in the far-far future)... What do you think?

Hmm if i were u, to get the bets lens i rather go straight to the 18-200VR lens. Good lens to replace 70-200, 18-55 and 18-135, unless if u wanna zoom to 300.

to be honest with u... the sharpness at 300 is quite bad... i always limit myself to shoot max up to 250mm
not that sure bout 18-200, i heard it has poor lighting and not that sharp towards 200
normally these lenses are sharp at their midspots ((200-18)/2) = 91mm

my tele is very sharp at 70mm and still sharp at 200mm. the quality drops as u zoom towards 220mm and above. the bokeh it gives also are nice for portait.. the models i shot were using my tele smile.gif and u can put a +4 filter to make it into a "macro" lens like the sample shots i took on the spider. today, 85% of the time my tele is fixed to my body. seldom use the kit anymore unless i'm taking sunsets or landscapes @18mm

yea... thats the feedback i got from some d70s users.
but its not a big deal.. u can simply use a 81A filter to give the natural warm tone and just adjust some settings in the camera...

but for the noise issue, need to ensure the taking is below iso400 and not underexposed.

i think i will upgrade to D80 for a one time investment on camera body, of course d200 will be the best, but its not the best bang for buck. i will try n complete all my lens collection and then only get d200 or a more superior cam in the future smile.gif

The jumping spider looks to be feeding on another household spider. "Daddy Long Legs" is the name IIRC.

still dun feel the need for an upgrade yet... and still need more time to think which lens + cam body will be good for my shootings...

That is what lotsa newbies refure to learn nowadays ... "adjust according to environment". New generation photographers tend to leave an average of 60% to software work or post processing becoz it's easier and 'more comfortable' to sit infront of the PC rather than figuring out what to do in promptu, blammin poor quality images to the lens (usually the kit lens) and their noon skills.

Rest assured, that unless you're willing to improve on your composition, angle and light play, couple with colour reading skills and mastering your white balance, you can remain as you are for the next 10 years or so. Save the cash to upgrade your PC or post processing software instead.

what's the zoom range when you're snapping those bird portraits?

my tammy 70-300mm is pretty soft when i'm at 300mm.

most of the shots are above 200mm and neva reached 300mm
max is 260mm f7.1, u have to increase the aperture number if ur shooting close to 300mm to get more sharpness... if i would goto 300mm, i will increase to f8-11

normally i stick with the highest aperture i can get from my lens. i've never considered lowering it as i'll need slower shutter speed. either that or bump ISO.

no mate, u can;t stick to the highest aperture when ur near the far end zoom...
pls refer to the MTF chart, it shows that when at 300mm, to get more sharpnes, u have to tune to f/8 to f/11

check it out here: http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/ni...556vr/index.htm

assuming ur using the same lens as me smile.gif
cheers!
