- rclxms.gif REVIEW- rclxms.gif
Somehow i forgot to put my review here last saturday, probably preoccupied with doing work on my Q5 Evo laptop

-Today, Boot time was at 11 seconds~
And Upon login took 3 seconds into desktop screen
SITUATION 1: AIRCOND ROOM IDLE
SITUATION 2: AT HOME IDLE-LEISURE BROWSING
SITUATION 3: AIRCOND ROOM (WORKING-2 EXCEL Instances, 3 google chrome tabs; 1 tab google search, 1 tab youtube at 720p, and 1 tab facebook)
SITUATION 4: AT HOME (GAMING la what, eg: Dirty Bomb)

SITUATION 1: 39-45 celsius
SITUATION 2: 50-65 celsius
SITUATION 3: 50-55 celsius
SITUATION 4: 65-85 celsius (so i bought a coolermaster MasterNotepal Pro:65-80)

RAM USAGE:
Always use only 5-8GB for gaming
Emulation PS2 smooth like butter (Persona 4)

Story: devil.gif
My previous laptop was a Lenovo Z400 touch, but touchscreen faulty vmad.gif it was one week after i purchased the lenovo
And it is now dead due to spill damage, wanted to replace/repair but shop said "Better you go buy a new laptop"
So my journey began, to search a laptop, was eyeing Alienware 13 R3, but not yet available in Malaysia (March)
Then I searched online for secondhands, refurbished etc. Before I stumbled upon Illegear, I had also seen some other Malaysian Custom Gaming Laptops.
But somehow I am more attracted to Illegear.
Maybe because from their facebook, they have outstanding customer service, answered my questions and fast reply.

I played dirty bomb with GT740M and have only reach ~55-60FPS puke.gif
Now, with GTX1050ti, 120FPS++ rclxub.gif (higher graphic settings some more)
Was using i5 3230M, still okay for me to browse, 8GB 1600MHz no lag, but boot time for Lenovo Z400 was over one minute.
Now with i7 7700HQ, blimey loading chrome faster than fast, 16 GB 2400MHz rolleyes.gif
I took out the 1TB HDD 5400RPM from my lenovo and used for additional Q5 EVO storage.
275GB crucial SSD great, with another empty SSD slot!
Also RGB lighting I set to bluish to pair with my logiteech G402 Hyperion Fury and soon G710+
I cry everytime I see my setup. wub.gif

Some cons:
However, there is a problem existing in my unit but now important just peculiar:
16GB ram, 2x8GB RAM, so two slots right?
But in task manager show 4 slots, so two still empty.
I don't mind this but maybe after warranty expire I will open up myself and see.
Another is the AC adapter, the exhaust fan are designed at the rear back.
But the AC in is designed bent, so the 'wayar' will be 'kena' the hot air coming out of the rear exhaust.
Probably Illegear should design a 'straight' type (But with the cooler master, elevated and not a problem anymore)

Bottomline; rclxs0.gif
My little brother will be sitting for his UPSR this year,
And he is already impressed with my laptop, so he says he wants one like mine.
So, I will BERUS him, lecture him to oso get illegear, maybe TROIKA? hahaha rolleyes.gif

has anyone here perform dust cleaning and re-apply thermal paste for your Q5 evo? since i assume it is almost a year old.
*
I have done dust cleaning last month for the two fans.
Regarding that, I noticed the GPU fan is not the same speed as the CPU fan,
Usually at turbo, they spin quite fast evenly, now the GPU fan spin at 3/4 of the CPU fan
Not much dust accumulated after a year.
I was unsure how to open the Heat sink, so i left them be.

For now, I have introduced:
1. Usage of XTU, for underclocking 7700HQ at -0.095 V
It is stable, but I've read that -0.100 V also works however i faced some bluescreens using that value.

2. Balanced Power Plan with max processor state for battery/plugged at 75% (~2095 Mhz)
At least my battery life longer now, albeit just minuscule.
Brings down the temperature a lot too (was previously hitting idle 60-65 Celsius)

With AIDA, I noticed I had 13% battery wear level, probably I forgotten to properly shutdown the laptop.

On temps, with the introduction of XTU, and the power plan, and after cleaning (No aircond, i think its standard room temperature?)
CPU Temps now reside 45 to 65 Celsius whilst browsing (While on this page writing this - 46 to 50 Celsius)
GPU idle at 35 Celsius, with load depending on graphic settings at 65-80 Celsius (as expected)

Was a bit of trouble to figure out how to open because there were two screws at the back port i forgot to open which made me almost gave up.
Quite unique assembly for this chassis, maybe one day, Illegear can include some standard removable dust filters for their laptops (just saying)

No problems so far,
Got my 1709 windows update (no issues)
GPU drivers update to latest (Sea of thieves updates)
Tekken 7 still runs perfectly
FFXV runs......okay with some graphic tweakings

Still a happy Q5 evo user, but dang it I should have waited some more time until RAVEN comes out last year.....

Greetings, I have successfully replace thermal paste for my Q5 Evo
Configuration added:
275GB Crucial MX300

Assisted by:
Phillips, Flat Head screwdrivers (bought from MR DIY-those small type)
Kimwipes (Obtained from my workplace), tissue to wipe
Cleaning solution (Isopropyl alcohol from workplace), you can just wipe with dry tissue, with more elbow grease

My brain and tenacity to execute YOLO dissassembly

STAGE 1
1. Shutdown LAPTOP
2. UNPLUG charger, USB(s) devices
3. Dismount battery

STAGE 2
1. Remove UPGRADE ACCESS PANEL
2. Remove HDD, SSD, WIFI CARD (note connection)
Optional: Remove RAM
3. Remove black tape thingy to reveal three cables
Unsure: Disconnect the cables (note connection)

STAGE 3 Unscrew all possible seen screws
1. Screw on row of speakers
2. Left and right screws
3. Screw on the back near the USB-C, USB 3.0, Ethernet, HDMI, and charger PORTS
4. There are two screws horizontal to the chassis at that same location
5. Screws near the battery holder, HDD holder, SSD holder, and basically all the screws you can see.

STAGE 4 The tricky a bit part
NOTE: There the plastic cover between the Illegear branding and Power toggle
Remove it to reveal 3 more screws, unscrew them
1. Prying off start from the speaker in my YOLO attitude.
2. Slows lift the keyboard and notice that there will one cable connecting to the keyboard.
3. Remove the screws holding the board (WIFI, POWER, DISPLAY toggle) from the keyboard.

Congratulation! You have removed the RGB keyboard!

STAGE 5
1. You can now access the FANS, remove and clean.
2. The large black tape thingy makes another appearance.
NOTE: The CMOS battery is the one that has black and red wire
Another cable near it is the speaker
Disconnect only the speaker
3. Disconnect HDD connection on the left, USB ports on the right.
4. There is left one cable connection for the motherboard to the screen, Disconnect the cable.
5. Above the cable is the ONLY screw left for the motherboard to attach to the chassis,
NOTE that Illegear has the CMOS battery stick to the chassis
6. Take care when flipping over the motherboard.

STAGE 6 Congratulations!
1. Now you have access to those heatpipes/heatsinks/CPU/GPU
2. Remove those screws holding them down
3. Clean, wipe, reapply thermal paste

STAGE 7 Pray and take a rest
1. Bask in the YOLO attitude, and guidance of human brain to conquer challenges.
2. Re-assemble the parts.
3. Switch on, and note some differences

My experience:
Before thermal paste reapply
Laptop goes to High Performance Power Plan every time boot up, CPU reaches 81 Degrees Celsius
Idle at Balanced Power Plan at 60 - 75
Gaming GPU 65 - 85
Browsing CPU 55 - 65

After thermal paste reapply
Laptop goes to High Performance Power Plan every time boot up, CPU reaches 65 Degrees Celsius
Idle at Balanced Power Plan at 50 - 55
Gaming GPU Have not game yet
Browsing CPU 55 - 60

What thermal paste? Cooler Master Master Gel Pro. But I think, there is not much difference from before. Maybe one day I should get into desktop.

Where picture?
It seems that I cannot add attachments, but hopefull you understand this simple/complex guide.

This is my second attempt to open the Q5 evo
First was to only clean FANS, wanted to clean heatsink but scared because I pry and pry open but cannot find that LAST screw connecting the motherboard to the chassis, now I found it on second attempt.

Good Luck
Any question you can ask, but disclaimer:
I executed this with YOLO attitude

Good day,
its been like 5 months, 23 days since the last post
and
its been like 1 year, 3 days ish since i have this Q5 EVO

Might as well share some further experiences

Here are what i have been facing, numpad inputs for 1,2,3, HOME and END on the keyboard no longer inputs.
FN key no longer inputs.
After disabling numlock the HOME, PGUP works on the numpad also FN key
Odd very odd

So, its the 123 numpad, and the actual HOME, END on the keyboard that does not work
Other numbers are working

Good morning, haven't had the time go there.
Otherwise maybe when your concept store open Illegear Concept Store Looming
Maybe I go to concept store to drop it off, and just maybe, maybe browse some potential replacement.

QUOTE(DorySandFish @ Nov 21 2019, 10:15 PM)
did you ever get this checked out?

I'm also having problems with my keyboard.

Previously numpad 5 and 3 key not working. Today I noticed my Windows key and FN key also seems to not work. So I did a keyboard check.

Not working keys:
Numpad 1,2,3,5
Dedicated Home, End, Pg Up
Fn Key
Windows Key

sad.gif Seems like the problem is slowly getting worse, so I will need to use another keyboard soon.....

Ah, i have seem to have forgotten to update this..

Illegear diagnosed my battery as faulty, got the battery replaced.
For the keyboard, was hardware issue, needed to replace whole keyboard.
I opted not to change the keyboard, as using external keyboard was not a problem for me.

Otherwise, like that lo.
