Hi,

May i know what are the differences between University Malaya Medical Centre and University Malaya Specialist centre?
It seem like both hospital also under UM and both have specialist doctors. Will the cost same for both hospital?
For brain surgery, which one recommended?

Thank you.

Ppum is government funded. So I believe cost will be cheaper.
I don't really know about umsc, but if am not mistaken, this one is more like private hospital.
Depends on your budget and the specialist. If there are neurosurgeon in both hospital, if you willing to wait, go for govt. If you dont want to wait, and afford to pay high, better go for private. smile.gif

UMMC/PPUM is government funded hospital.

UMSC is a specialist private hospital, one of the best too actually.

They are the same, same medical team and staff

in UMMC, you dont choose who operates, also dont choose when you operate, it can be 1 year , 2 years or maybe even never. Operations are very cheap, but its a government hospital thing la.

in UMSC, you choose who operates, but also can choose when you operate, which normally is 2 weeks or sometimes asap.

Prices are higher in UMSC cause its the private arm of UMMC, i dont know about it la, but last time when i approached HUKM, it was about half the going rate of outside private hospitals

Actually UMSC is the private wing of PPUM
Run by Consultant level professors from UM
Yes operates as a private entity but price range slightly lower than other private centres

Doctors who work in UMSC actually make rounds at UMMC. The doctors all have schedules and they rotate between Specialist Centre and Medical Centre. Usually, if you're being treated at UMMC, the doctor would refer you to Specialist Centre for follow up / rehab work.

For UMMC, the fees are still quite cheap and most medication is subsidized with the exception of certain meds.

I sprained my ankle and went to UMMC for checks. The doctor attended to me has a sports clinic in UMSC and he asked me to go to his clinic at UMSC for further check and physio work. The fee was very minimal even at UMSC.

For major surgery, even if we cant choose who operates in UMMC, usually the doctor that get assigned will be one of the big doctor over there right?

hard to say really, cause "major" means different to different people and if a doctor is touching you, chances are he has quite a bit of experience already.

my personal experience in UMMC has been great, hell they even drag me to see a Dr from UK, but that is not for an operation.

Seriously, go see the doctor first, UMMC then see what they say. Cause you never know, it maybe something semi-urgent and you need to do it in UMSC or they may even refer you to HUKM or other hospitals. My past experience for another operation in HUKM, they refered me to the private arm, but then i cant do that there cause my insurance refused to recognize it, and i ended up in sunway.

hospital visits can be quite a messy affair, it snot like you walk in, say wanna get operated and they pop you on the table.

And there are damn cheap and unprofessional doctors or specialist who will tell you in face, you pay me private rate, I'll see you straight away and if you wanna use government rate, then you wait long long.
Please, if you ever meet a doctor who talk like that, please find another one...

Sorry guys but I need to bring up this topic again.

Sadly my MIL was dianogse with coronary artery disease, which 1 of the vessel block quite seriously.

If we wanted to bring her to check and follow up in UMSC (to speed up), but treatment and operation wise we do it in UMMC, is that possible?

We are from a small family, and worse still my MIL do not have any insurance coverage.

Anyone could recommend what's the best?

Many thanks.

im not sure if its possible, but do check with the doctor

that being said, UMMC will be slow, just because you are a patient in UMSC wont mean you make UMMC faster. Also my friends told me they increased the prices for UMSC, so you might want to try another option like HUKM or something.
