I went for Petronas interview for the finance executive position yesterday.

1st round: Chit-chat session (I was confident and was prepared for the interview. There were two panels both are senior finance executive with over 20 years of working experience with Petronas. They were nice and humble I was comfortable with the session although at first I was trembling at my voice lool  rclxub.gif . They asked me standard questions like my background, education, sports, working experience, bla bla bla. And then when the finance HOD(head of department) came in, and they asked me 'why do you want to work with petronas?' . I noticed the look he gave to their HOD and I was like  sweat.gif . I was thinking, what's with the expression? Thank God I was prepared for that question, did some research, and presented my points clearly. In the middle of the session the HOD left. Everything else went well and at the end I asked them what they like most about working with petronas? Both of them look at each other and don't even smile. I knew there's something wrong but hey they stayed for more than 20 years so there must be good reasons too. They didn't answer that question. And I asked them what are their least favourite thing of working with petronas and again they look at each other with a higher degree of negative face expression. I thought it was an inappropriate question and opologized but they said it's fine. They told me the least favourite thing is the stress. And their way of easing it is by sharing their situation with other colleagues. )

And then I went for lunch! I was starving (didn't take my breakfast)  tongue.gif When I get home and relaxing I received a phone call from petronas and he asked me about accounting stuffs. I didn't know that there's gonna be a phone technical interview  rclxub.gif TOTALLY NOT PREPARED with all the questions.

2nd round: Phone interview (The HOD called me at the same day and asked me about double-entry, tax and corporate finance related questions. I passed double-entry. I failed at tax questions. And I was ok at corporate finance. Geez I was like  icon_question.gif !! My brain has been relaxing so much and I was totally not ready with it. And in addition, the HOD told me 'heyyy I left school 16 years ago and I can still remember this stuff! You just left few months!'. What's with the yelling  shocking.gif. But I don't blame him for blaming me he's the boss.  But I'm concerned with the 'type' he is. And then he asked me about general questions such as who is petronas CEO? what is the height of KLCC? and do you watch F1? I know who's the CEO but I dont know KLCC's height and I dont know anything about F1. And then I told him everything I know about Petronas and at the end manage to impress him with my last answers  blush.gif  At the end of the conversation, he told me he'll discuss with the others again whether to pass me or not and told me to wait within 2 weeks. And his last words were 'If you didn't get the phone call, you know you have been bluffing enough. hahahahaha.' Wow. Again I was shocked because that's rude language. I sense that if I ever get to work with him that's gonna be a great opportunity but at the same time I'll have to bear with all the inner sickness  cool.gif

This morning he called me again asking about my MUET. I don't have that and only tell him about my IELTS result. I thought he already throw my application into the garbage bin yesterday  whistling.gif

I think my chance of getting to the next stage is 50-50. Anyhow I'll just prepare myself with all the CASE STUDY and ROLE PLAYING. Knowledge is a gain[COLOR=green] thumbup.gif .

Hey thanks for sharing your interview experience. Are you an experienced worker? i'm a fresh graduate majoring in non technical major. I will be attending their SI this Thursday, the HR personnel informed me that I was shortlisted for SI, not like yours; the chit chat session. I wonder if the chit chat session is included in my SI tomorrow.. perhaps i should figure out how tall is KLCC :-D

Hey buttercup313 I'm a fresh graduate in accounting and finance. SI is my next stage if i pass the chit-chat and phone sessions. The panels said SI (Case study + role playing + CBI) is going to be 'strict'. I translate it as 'very tough'  tongue.gif . I think you should contact the HR again whether there's chit-chat session or not. Yea you should prepare yourself with petronas info. You can get the points from their annual reports, facebook, twitter etc.  smile.gif You still have time to prepare. I practiced in front of the mirror and drank lots of water lol  drool.gif
*
Hey carolee1209, I attended the SI today and I asked is there any other stage after this and she said no; this is the last one before I will be informed whether I'm recommended or not. They said I can give them a call after a week to know the status of the interview. Overall it was okay, I think for me it was more like a discussion. Since a lot of people have been sharing their experience, I might as well share mine . biggrin.gif

My interview was scheduled at 10am but I've to wait for the person before me to finish his session. 2 hours after that I was called. My assessors were very friendly. Me myself, I'm pretty talkative so I managed to leave my stress and nerves outside the door. Oh forgot to mention that the case study I was given was about customer dissatisfaction. There's only like 5 paragraph if I'm not mistaken. I had an hour to prepare for my ideas but lucky me while I was on board yesterday I read my school (LOL school? in the US they called college/university= school) book about how to manage a business, so it really helped a lot. I wrote on a piece of paper about my ideas, pros, cons, long and short terms solutions, examples. I came out with several examples to strengthen my opinion but ended up didn't use any of them. Reading a lot will help you this. But I believe it was more about how you think. How do you come out with a solution? Are you systematic? Be confident and firm on your decision/proposal. They challenged me with lots of arguments. I'm surprised at myself, I didn't panic (I'm a very gelabah person actually HAHAH). Before the case study discusion, there's a ice breaking about background, schools, majors, strength, weaknesses etc. Basic stuffs that you don't need to prepare much.

Then onto CBI, they asked me about 2 things. 1) Any challenge you have faced before and how you deal with it. They gave me time to think for a while. I was prepared for this question actually (gotten by reading the whole tread and googling about petronas interview questions). They asked me to explain every detail of the story. Then 2) Learning on fly. Describe something that you've to pick up fast; something that is really new for you and you need to master it in a short time. It was more like a story telling imho hehe.

The last one is role play. I was given two cards. I heard they just want to do one card (I think they're hungry because we all haven't had our lunch yet so they wanna finish soon). But in the end I had to do two cards. Some people say the more cards you get the better you're doing but some say the opposite. I think how many cards are given doesn't give any indication of how your performance is. It's all depends on the interviewers, only the know (of course). I was a manager, then the directors gave us a project that we need to complete it within 3 days. Two of my workers didn't want to stay back because they had other important commitments. I think I didn't do quite well..so they gave me the second card. This time I got into the game and acted well (ahah or so I think). Basically, this part you're in charged, you can create any situation you wish for based on what they said. They argued with me, challenged me, but I just stayed calm. Empathy is the key here. As a manager I told them that it is important for me to reach out to my staffs. Since my staffs are burden with lots of works in 3 days, I told the interviewers that it is important for me to always concern about their (staff) condition. I would call all of them for a meeting to update on the progress and at the same time listen to their problems. Let them release their stress..share the problem among ourselves and be positive. So when everyone goes out of the meeting room, there will be less pressure. Hence, increase the productivity.

I asked them a question; what motivates them to go to work everyday? Omagerd I'm happy that I ask them because they give me insight of how a working world is. Very interesting. One of the interviewer gave me a lot of advises. They talked about their work for almost 15minutes. hahah so I just listened and nodded.

Overall, alhamdulillah I think I did okay. I hope I'll get a good news but I'm very satisfied with my own performance, and thats all matters to me. Perhaps I should have read and remember more of Petronas's story to show them that I'm very interested in their company. I didn't give any example from Petronas when I'm defending my ideas. So guys, please read about Petronas more than I did and tell them about what you know. Everyone I know who had done an interview will tell me to just be myself. Yes that's absolutely true. Just be yourself and everything will flow naturally.Hmm what else..oh yea, the assessors are flexible in language. They spoke rojak to me haha..
So good luck to anyone if you happen to have an upcoming interview. smile.gif

thanks mangoman, you must be already working for Petronas since you said that way. I will enjoy and will treat it as my 'short holiday' ^^

and today I got my offer letter with all those forms. Do I need return all those forms to HRM division in KLCC or just bring it to the place where I will report for duty? HR does not mentioned where I should return it, however I already signified the acceptance of scanned version of the offer letter and send an email to them.

hey congrats! where are you going to work? Sabah? (since you mentioned SBO) When did you have your SI? I had mine in late august.. currently waiting for their call. I wonder when..

I passed my SI and CBI on Middle of Oct.. I guess it's been 3 month already since I got call from HR informed me that I have to wait for Medical Check-Up letter.  Everytime I called they gave the same excuses, they in the midst of finalizing my placement. Luckily I didn't submit my resign letter yet. I hope my patient will be pay off soon. Too tired waiting for this.

same here, I've been waiting since September 2012 for my placement but every time I called them they said they'll call me back when there's any news. I wonder how much longer I would have to wait.

Is there any possibilities of not being called up at all ? They said the placement is subjected to vacancy..What is the point of calling up for interview if there are no vacancies ?  I just worried if there's still no news after 6 months  icon_question.gif
*
I agree with you, they have a very weird hiring process. Anyway I asked HR about your concern and they said Petronas will definitely hire us but we have to wait lah. My friend who is a Pet scholar thought Pet doesnt need him after 6months of waiting but on the 7th month he got a call to start working. So there's a slight hope there. The waiting is really painful so it is best to look for other job and keep on waiting and pray for the best!

Bro, did you read my post? With all due respect, I'm a geologist and I have been in the industry for more than 10 years, I know how it works. I've been going offshore in my early years. But I'm not going in as a geoscientist, the more senior you get, the wider your scope to be in. I've done various works, geophysicist, geomodeler, consultant, even a system engineer. I don't want to go into details, but I can assure you that I won't ever go offshore with this position. The oil & gas industry is big, really big.

I'm familiar with Petronas, just not with their HR.

Thanks for your kind reply.

Hi all. Just want to share my story. I passed my SI in September 2013, a week after I had it. Then I've been calling HR for every to weeks and until at one point (maybe late November) I stopped calling them. Then in late January I called up again to follow up. The HR was well aware that I've been waiting since September. Then the next day they emailed me saying that they could not find a position for me and wish me good luck for my future. I was a bit confused actually. Does that mean I didn't get any job and got rejected? Or does it mean that particular HR division does not have any suitable position for me? Then they called me confirming that what they meant by it, is the latter. Phew so there's still chance for me. But honestly speaking, I don't put any hope anymore. If there's rezeki then adalah kan. So they put my name under another HR. What got me upset is that whenever I called them, they never tell me any updates and just told me to wait for their call.
I was happened to have a friend whose her husband works in HR at Petronas as well. He told me that he can check the status of my placement and the result is currently there are 2 Operating Units that are considering me. Lucky me again, happened to be that my dad's friend is a senior manager at Petronas then he helped to check my status. And I got more accurate result; PETCO is currently considering me and will finalize it by end of this week (if lucky), should they not be able to put me in, they will push my CV to another OPU.

So here I am now, still waiting for them to call me if they want to take me in. Thank God I'm currently working so it does not really matter how long it would take. But I hope it won't take too long. Moral of the story is, KEEP ON CALLING THEM if you're in the same situation like me. I should have called them continuously till they're annoyed and do something about it.

IMHO, you were already KIVed when they said you needed to wait a period of time. They were just being polite by keep on saying they will push to other units

My friend who just graduated end of last year and passed all the tests including medical and he will be going to Kerteh in this FEB month. Seems like he waited not that long.  wink.gif
*
Yeah maybe you're right. I just hope PETCO will accept me. Your friend is very lucky then. rclxms.gif smile.gif I have a friend who had the same case, only faster. The whole process of him from passing SI to getting offer letter only takes few weeks. Different people different case, depends on rezeki too

Some time is relative to Petronas HR. They have their own definition of time which is different than the rest of us. I mean asking for the degree transcript for the 3rd time is downright absurd. I have MS Outlook, unless HR likes to Archived their email every 3 days, then it's a bit difficult to look for the email but who are we kidding right?

That is why when I was in Petronas I HATED HR ..... but they are the gatekeepers so what are you going to do. I swear if I ever become a big boss in Petronas, the first Division I would wipe clean is HR.

I hope you'll become the big boss in Petronas one day!

seriously? niceeee! my session is tomorrow at 3.30pm. I'm not sure what position specifically but when I asked, they said Trading Executive.
how about you?
*
IDK when is mine! haha but the other day when hr called he said his boss would like to meet me this week so I said Friday is good. Since I'm in Borneo island, I need to get my flight ticket first but yesterday I called the hr to confirm but there's no answer! I assumed the hr personnel is on leave (just to be positive lols). I called every half an hour. I don't want to waste my money buying the flight ticket and only to know that the boss might not be available on Friday. So yeah today I'll try to call again.
Btw mine is for risk management (I'm actuarial sc major), they didn't really specify as what.

Good luck on your session!! smile.gif

Hi azraeil,

I would like to ask for your view on petronas downstream and upstream, any insights on the work nature/exposure/anything ? Major difference?

This is because I had chit chat sessiosn with PEX Carigali and Downstream Marketing which both are under strategic planning department. They'd like to offer me analyst position if I got selected. People say upsteam lagi 'best' but Idk what they really meant by 'best'. FYI I have business background. smile.gif

It depends what you really want in life... the modus operandi of downstream and upstream is very different. In downstream, you have limited budget and most of the time the technicians can tackle the work so you exposure to technical is even more. For upsteam, 95% of the work are done by contractor so basically it is more on planning and do arrangement but of course you still can learn technical stuffs provided that you have to go offshore very often. In terms of marketing value, upstream of coz is more promising.
*
Hey mangoman, thanks for your responds!

During my chitchat session with upstream, the manager mentioned that I have the opportunity to go offshore even though I don't have any technical background, the reason being is for exposure. And they also involve in handling events/forum/talks apart of doing normal office jobs. Then I asked the downstream manager if they have such things, and the answer is no.

I feel like the upstream has more to offer to me.

Based on your experience, can a person receive 2 job offers from two different department at the same time?
I'd love to join upstream but they still haven't confirmed me anything...
