QUOTE(azraeil @ Nov 7 2012, 01:48 AM) PMU reports to the President. Carigali and other operators reports to PMU as PMU approves all their development plans and also reviews and approves all the cost recovery mechanism. Bro azraeil,How likely is it for an executive to get transferred from.. lets say Carigali to PMU (one OPU to another) or from a technical role to commercial role? |

QUOTE(azraeil @ Nov 10 2012, 02:47 PM) It happens all the time. Most PMU staff that I worked with previously are now the big shots in Carigali and vice versa. I think the process goes like this, if you want to transfer, approach the department head or the middle manager of the department that you'd like to transfer to. If the have vacancies, they'll ask for your resume (internally of course) and if they like the fit, they will contact your current department for the possibility of transfer. Also, once you're set into wanting to transfer, write in your PPA in the comments section that you'd like to broaden your horizon etc and that you'd like to request for a transfer to X department in x OPU. It's a slow process but if the other department has persuasive boss, he should be able to get you in. Thanks for your reply. It is reassuring to know that albeit the process might be slow. I would love to try out new environment and new things after 2-3 at my soon-to-be OPU. |

QUOTE(mangoman @ Nov 14 2012, 02:46 AM) There are only 3 tiers. That is something new to me.To be honest with you, Tier 1 will get RM1000 tech allowance which will be absorbed into your basic salary. Tier 2 will get RM800. Tier 3 none. So in short, you are only RM200 more than other discipline engineers. Edit: You only receive that tech allowance after 1 year of service. Hehe. Lets say I fall under the category of other discipline engineers & I am based in East Malaysia, does that mean I will receive an additional of RM1200 after 1 year of service - RM800 of tech allowance and RM400 of EM allowance (10% of my basic) compared to those who are in Tier 3 and based in Peninsular? |

That's awesome. I came with no expectation at all (RM4k basic salary) and I was pleasantly surprised.
Now, I will think twice about switching to a commercial role just to work in the KLCC office. |

QUOTE(mangoman @ Nov 15 2012, 06:21 PM) You are wrong. The tech allowance will be absorbed into you basic salary. So after 1 year (assuming there is no increment), RM4800 (basic salary including the incorporated tech allowance) + RM 480 (10% EM allowance) = RM5280. Fuyooohhh, nice No need to listen to some say, hear say or whatever say. It is after one year in service. Cheers. QUOTE(jc87 @ Nov 15 2012, 06:59 PM) After all, technical people are more important to an O&G company. They decide where to drill the well and whatnot. PETRONAS is not an accounting firm or a financial institution. This post has been edited by Kitteh: Nov 15 2012, 07:49 PM |

QUOTE(azraeil @ Nov 27 2012, 05:46 PM) Some of my good friends are in the Facilities side of things but the exact nature of their job I am not so sure since I'm a subsurface guy. Hi bro azraeil.. I was seconded to maintenance department (mechanical engineering) as well.. may I know how your friends (those in the facilities) have been doing? I am a bit concerned with my prospects, worrying that dealing with plant maintenance can be a "dead-end" job, hence it is hard to move up the ladder.. To those who have been to PIPE, do we need to bring our own iron or it will be provided at the hostel?
QUOTE(azraeil @ Nov 28 2012, 12:19 PM) The friends I have in the Facilities side are those involved in the platform design, compressors specs and usually the FEED aspect (Front End Engineering Design). Most of them are now GMs and SMs in their respective area. I see. Thanks for your reply. |

QUOTE(azraeil @ Nov 28 2012, 01:20 PM) I would suspect though is that if you start on the Maintenance side of things, you will have an advantage in the future once you move to the design/specs of things as you will have hands on experience. I hope so. I would love to have more options or opportunities once I am more experienced. At the mean time, I just can't wait to join and start absorbing as much knowledge I can. Other than having the right attitudes - willing to learn and ask the right questions & attend as much courses, training as I can & network, any other advices from you to a fresh graduate? |

QUOTE(overruled23 @ Nov 28 2012, 11:06 PM) i have one for you; do not complain so much of not being able to move up the ladder when you do not even started working yet. just be thankful you got the job when thousands others don't. open up your mind and do not be like those typical fresh grads. i sure hope that you don't end up at my opu though. Based on your logic, no one shall question, complain or compare about their job because thousands of people out there are unemployed. IMHO, it is only natural to ponder about the future prospects even before I've started working. I am merely voicing out my concerns while seeking for others' opinions. Anyway, thanks for your advice. I will keep that in mind.I am forever thankful for being given a chance to develop my skills under Petronas, especially when I am a non-scholar. I am not recruited because of any bond. Lastly, don't worry, I am not seconded to PMO. Added on November 29, 2012, 12:14 am QUOTE(mangoman @ Nov 28 2012, 11:50 PM) Maintenance dept is the most challenging dept especially if you are handling brown field. You are dealing with equipment breakdown on frequent basis, that is how you get your knowledge/experience which are totally priceless and very valuable, you are also handling different type of service providers which will enhance your people managing skill as every service provider has different working attitude, so you have to be very persuasive and flexible to deal with them. You also have knowledge on the operation side, contract management, cost control/management and etc. Thank you for the detailed descriptions of the job. I now know what to expect and look forward to. It is reassuring to know that I get to deal and work with different service providers as I enjoy interaction with people. Maintenance is a all rounder job. If you have maintenance background, you can always move to facilities design position later since you know all the constraints, operation, problems for the equipment. However, if you are from facilities design position but want to move into maintenance dept, you will find it very hard due to lack of hands on experience. The only bad side is, you will have to be standby 24/7 and be very proactive. It can literally drain your energy as time goes by. Thanks again.
