I guess they can't blame it on merchant.. online transaction has no MCC to identify, it is the bank system captured the transaction source code and classified as online transaction.. if this is to bring up to BNM, the bank is answerable and not merchant. Also, Lazada and Taobao is very common online purchase platform which the bank cannot deny..
