Now, my most recent Long Trip backpacking was last Sept (2016) to Xinjiang, China. Xinjiang is the furthest point one can go in China, where their Provincial Capital is closer to the Capitals of Russia, India, Pakistan etc, than it is to Beijing. There you'd feel as if you're NOT IN CHINA at all. The people look exotic, hardly speaks Mandarin, with middle eastern background sound/music, almost impossible to find pork, kinda situation. It is the MOST diverse picturesque place I've ever been (and I've been to quite a number of different places), from Moon light Landscapes to what you see in LOTR, and the world's largest "shifting" desert. I was there, on own orgainsed itinerary for 3 weeks. Absolutely treasured every second and would not hesitate if given an opportunity to return to Xinjiang. Keyword (So Not China).
