Firstly, do you understand what 'firmware' means?

i've been programming in assembly and C for microcontroller 68HC11 and HC12. i also did a little MIPS and now i'm learning VHDL to program PLDs. i think i know what firmware means eventho the term is hardly used in my classes.

QUOTE(tachlio @ Mar 12 2007, 05:36 AM) i gotta say its between software and hardware, thats why its 'firm'. its hardware programming basically. very low level programming, if u study computer archtecture u'd see theres high and low level programming. the low level interacts 'directly' with the hardware and provides abstraction for the higher ones. in other words its software embedded in hardware like chips, microcontrollers etc. BIOS is an example, theres software in the BIOS chip that u boot up your PC from to run other programs in your hard drives, CD's etc. |

The first paragraph, the low level programming u mentioned is closer to assembly language |

Good to hear that a few ASM programmers still exist. We're a dying breed and me myself have let my skill languish for a long time, well most unis and colleges just don't give much emphasis on firmware and are more content to concentrate on high level or object orientated languages.

Added on March 14, 2007, 7:33 pmi was hoping somebody got input about companies needing firmware designer/programmer/engineer. This post has been edited by emememe: Mar 14 2007, 07:33 PM |
