-Cars will now build up dirt, scratches, have real-time and placed bullet hole damage, and other cosmetic details. Cars can be taken to car washes and cleaned.

-Niko can fully customize his clothing and his hair/facial hair. However, there will be no "working out" as in GTA: San Andreas. Niko's physique will stay the same throughout gameplay.

-Restaurants such as Burger Shot and Cluckin Bell are returning as well as Sprunk Soda and other food options. These foods can be bought and eaten to increase health.

-There is a new feature known as "ZIT." It is a company that you text message when you hear a song that you like in the game, but do not know the name of. Then, the title and artist of the song is texted to your phone so that you can purchase the song in-game later.

-The same great companies return to the GTA series. But besides the older "Cluckin Bell" and "Burger Shot" newer knock-offs of Starbucks and "Virgin Mobile" are in GTA IV

-GTA IV has a new shooting and cover system that has been called "comparable to Gears of War." Niko can sprint and slide into cover behind objects, cars, etc., and he can blind fire for extra cover while behind his cover.

-Shooting now can be fully-automatic with a full squeeze of the trigger, or placement shooting with a half-squeeze of the trigger. This means that you can blow out knee-caps with one shot, shoot at feet, head-shots, shoulder-shots, etc, etc. NPCs who are hurt but not dead will crawl to cover and possibly even try to shoot you, still.

-All NPC's (pedestrians, etc) are randomly created during gameplay and given specific personalities and traits. Pedestrians will perform everyday tasks like purchasing items, smoking, using umbrellas, spraying graffiti, taking shelter during bad weather, opening the trunk of their car whilst parked, look under the bonnet at the engine, hobos will be seen putting their hands over flaming barrels to get warm and also doing a lot of other realistic things. Also, hardly any duplicate pedestrian models and car models are in the same area.

-Grenades and Molotov cocktails can be dropped from car windows

-Stealing cars will now be super-realistic. Niko must sneak up to parked cars, smash in the window, and hotwire the car. If he attempts to steal a running car at an intersection, etc, and he does not have a gun, NPCs will fight back, and Niko may not be able to steal the car

-When the police strike, Niko can put his hands above his head and fake arrest. You can make him run away at the last second, or even counter the police officer and disarm him.

-Police AI is now very, VERY advanced. Police will search within a specific radius for Niko, and if they do not find him, they will give up. The police also follow you using a line-of-sight basis. This means that if you can break the sight that they have on you, Niko can escape using rooftops, ladders, fire escapes, or anything possible that will break the police's vision on you.

-NPC's will now remember Niko. If they had a rough encounter with him earlier and lived to tell about it, they may recognize him during later gameplay and either attack him, run away, or possibly phone the police

-Climbing is more prominent than previous GTA's. Niko can climb telephone polls, signs, and essentially anything with a ledge. He can also hand-over-hand shimmy on ledges.

-Niko's phone is essentially his lifeline. All mission are run from his cell-phone (which can be upgraded), and now Niko can call contacts to start missions instead of only contacts calling him. The cell-phone also allows Niko to take on multiple missions, re-start mission when failed, listen to music, call and text friend/contacts, and even take pictures.

-Emergency services can be contacted and sent to Niko's location; these include the police, ambulances, and fire dispatches. Niko can use these services as a distraction, to regain health, or even to report other crimes taking place in the game.

-In the middle of a mission, Niko can take on entirely different jobs.

-Taxis are a large part of the game now. Players hail taxis using either the left bumper or L1 button. Players can enjoy the ride, pay double the amount to make the taxi drivers drive twice as fast, skip the ride altogether, or he could just steal the taxi.

-The game itself is set in October 2007.

-Throughout the game, bigger weapons will have to be stashed out of sight or Niko will attract attention.

-No more "endless pockets" for Niko. Large weapons (RPGs and sniper rifles) will have to be stashed in trunks, put into duffel bags, or carried.

-Banks and the banking system are now a large part of GTA IV. Niko stashes all of his money in his bank account which can be accessed from ATM's and going to the actual bank.

-Comedy clubs are a new edition to a game. There are also strip clubs as well.

-Side view mirrors use real time reflections.

-Niko has the ability to hang off of vehicles such as trucks and helicopters.

-You can build "relationships" with your friends which works kind of like girlfriends in San Andreas. You can take them to bars/clubs and if it turns out good you get a positive response from them. Get your relationship status to a certain extent and you will get a reward such as free taxi lifts or private helicopters etc.

-To restore health Niko can either eat, sleep, or get health pickups.

-Weapons are no longer easy to find. You will have to go into ally's or basements in order to find weapons. Or you could call up Little Jacob and buy them $100 a peice.

-In a car, you can put your head lights to full or dim, but not off.

-Cockroaches can be found in the poorer part of Liberty City in the ally ways.

-Niko can also push people off the top of sky scrapers.

-You can now shoot with any gun from a car. By pressing LB/L1 Niko smashes the window with his gun and puts his hand out the car in a driveby stance. In a car you press LB/L1 to shoot and the right analog stick to aim.

-You will be able to change Niko's facial hair, pants, torso, glasses, and gloves.

-The mission complete sign is now gone. After you complete a mission you will get rewarded by a catchy mission complete tune.

-After every mission the game saves automatically. But any non-mission activity can be saved at your safe houses.

-Painted yellow lines beside safe houses serve as garages. Park your car there, and it will stay there for ever.

-Niko wears a helmet when he rides a motorbike.

-There are 18 radio stations in the game

-There are no load times at all in the game after the loading screen, not even when there are interior-exterior transitions (and vice versa).

-The "fantasy" vehicles have been removed. Such as tanks, jet packs, and planes.

-If you leave your game for sometime, an animation will start up where Niko first scratches his head, then his arm, and then his leg.

-If you run over a pedestrian his blood will stay on the car.

-Beer is called "piss water"

-Tolls at the Brooklyn Bridge costs $5, if you are in a police vehicle, you go free.

-If you crash into a wall, the wind shield will get broken. Crash hard enough and Niko will fly through the wind shield.

-The airport is the Francis International Airport as seen in GTA III.

-Niko's mobile phone is the Sony Ericsson's W800i replica.

-To do taxi missions you can call up Roman and he could lend you his taxi so you could get some cash.

-Some cars will have spinners, But you won't be able to "mod" your ride in the game.

-When you approach a bus stop, an icon appears on-screen that enables you to control the bus schedule.

-Every street in the game has a name.

-Car radio's can be heard as they pass by. It sounds muffled and you will be able to feel the base through vibration.

-It is possible to surf the "GTA" internet in the game using the "Tw@ cafe", which costs $1. Niko can use the internet to upload his resume for "prospective employers". You could also use the internet to mess around with some other cool things as well such as communication. There are over 100 accessible fictitious websites in the game.

-It is possible to shoot through walls with powerful weapons.

-A day in Liberty City is 48 minutes long, which means that one game hour lasts 2 minutes in real-time.

-When a car alarm is triggered, police wandering around in that area will be aware of it.

-If you drive up slowly to pedestrians they will defensively put there hands out towards your bonnet, rather than just ignoring you.

-Newspapers swirl, and get thrown around in the wind if you hit one of the flimsy vending boxes with your vehicle.

-Old, Frailer drivers can be removed swiftly from their car. Whilst younger and burlier drivers require more force. I.e that from your boot or fist.

-The liberty city road surface looks like a patchwork of tarmac. Of different ages and shades in some areas. With others having metal plates were road work has taken place.

-You can cycle through your weapons whilst driving.

-You can hang from your fingers and shimmy across the exteriors of buildings.

-Lam posts don't simply buckle over instantly like previous games. they have weight, and will cause damage to the vehicle.

-Traffic lights also have weight, they realistically flow with the wind.

-You have the ability to target vehicles.

-When you get arrested, the police put handcuffs on you.

-Driving through red lights attract the police.

-Pedestrians can call you by mistake.

-Phone bills are payable

-There are more cheats than in previous gta's.

-LC tours are possible by boats, helicopters, or tour buses.

-Pedestrians are able to kiss together on the streets
